I mean, come on... the cast is outstanding, the concept could have been okay, but the script... oh dear. WTAF????

I hate films like that, I'd rather watch three guys in a bar being killed by a fucking pencil.

TheWernethWife · 18/08/2020 13:41

Another favourite of mine is "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café" - with Kathy Bates, Mary Stuart Masterson and Mary Louise Parker.

iklboo · 18/08/2020 13:59

@TheWernethWife - the book of Fried Green Tomatoes is so much better, though I do enjoy the film. Kathy Bates is fab.

Worth it for a couple of great quotes, eg ‘he’s a boil on the butt of humanity’ - oft relevant here on MN - and ‘I will not let my personal tragedy interfere with my ability to do good hair’ Grin

"If you can't say anything nice about anybody, come sit by me."

I've used this line a few times Grin

Fried green tomatoes book even has the recipe in . I might dig it out and try some this year .

@BillywilliamV

"I love it less than I did because I am suddenly aware of the absolute whiteness of it all."

It's a true depiction. I think it's patronising to put Black characters in, when they wouldn't have been equally included in white middle class society. They do it in historical dramas and it throws out the believability.

pandafunfactory · 18/08/2020 18:55

It was based on real people and a real tragedy. I always enjoy it. Howl like a baby at the funeral though ' I'm fine, im great, I could jog to Texas and back but my daughter can't....she never could' or something like that....

Funnyface1 · 18/08/2020 19:17

Haven't watched this in years, I'm really in the mood for it now. One for tomorrow night when dh is working I think. Yabu.

Tunnocks34 · 18/08/2020 19:44

Absolutely wrong.

The film is a masterpiece. Dolly is phenomenal as always.funny, sad, funny, sad and some how ending on a high note.

SenecaFallsRedux · 18/08/2020 20:13

If memory serves, Fannie Flagg's recipe is very authentic. The key to authenticity is using cornmeal in the coating as well as flour.

I would rather have 30 minutes of "wonderful" than a lifetime of nothing special.

honeybeetheoneandonly · 19/08/2020 12:35

I loved it esp after watching the bonus material on the DVD. Her brother adored his sister and had some beautiful stories about her. Her mum said she was invited to watch when they were filming the death scene and the relief she felt when Julia Roberts got up after the scene.
I think she also talked about how hey husband started shooting the birds when they annoyed them ay the wedding/party.
It may all have seemed a bit random in the film but after watching the film with the actual family members it makes the film so much more enjoyable.

SenecaFallsRedux · 19/08/2020 12:59

Fun fact: Robert Harling, the author and younger brother of Susan (the inspiration for Shelby), played the Presbyterian minister in the film. He was in the wedding scene and in the bleeding armadillo cake scene.

Swallowzandamazons · 19/08/2020 13:20

I love it, it's a fairly gentle movie and all the better for that. The men are bit parts and that's fine by me. If you want action, watch an action movie, it's certainly not one of those! I aspire to be Ouiser as I age (although Clairee is a wonderful smart ass, I suspect I'm not quick enough to be her).

"KILL, Rex. KILL!!!!"

SenecaFallsRedux · 19/08/2020 13:33

Ouiser: "The only reason that people are nice to me is I have more money than God."

Ouiser (responding to the accusation that she has never done anything religious) "Now that is not true. When I was in school, a bunch of my friends and I would dress up as nuns and go bar-hoppin."

Swallowzandamazons · 19/08/2020 13:36

Ouiser is an outstanding character. I wish I had more money than God....

and yes, I did steal those magnolias outta her tree.
