I mean, come on... the cast is outstanding, the concept could have been okay, but the script... oh dear. WTAF????

YABU, love it and love that it’s mostly about women, the men are a footnote.

Although just saw this bit of trivia online and thought it was a tad creepy:

Intent on filming the story in as realistic a way as possible, Ross [director] hired the actual doctors and nurses who looked after Susan Harling in her final days to do the same for Shelby on the set. The nurse who turns off Shelby’s life support in the film did the same for Susan in real life.

honeygirlz · 18/08/2020 07:24

I thought Julia Roberts was great! And she was the only one to get a Oscar nom for the film!

Willow2017 · 18/08/2020 07:25

Yabvvvu.
It's all about the characters. Strong women which is pretty rare even now.
The characters being all different makes it.
The actresses all bring the characters to life.
They have some of the best lines in any film ever.

It's my go to film for laughs and when i need a good cry😄

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 18/08/2020 07:26

I love it - I was going to have blush and bashful for my bridesmaids

FippertyGibbett · 18/08/2020 07:35

I like it, sorry 🥴

OohKittens · 18/08/2020 07:38

You are being so unreasonable it is an amazing film.

KatherineJaneway · 18/08/2020 07:43

It's a brilliant film that never fails to make me cry.

Honey, time marches on and eventually you realize it is marchin' across your face.

dayswithaY · 18/08/2020 07:46

I love it for its lush pink glittery 80s feel, love anything that Sally Field or Dolly is in. At the time it was a big deal because it was an all female cast. I also love Mystic Pizza, another amazing 80s film.

I hate Thelma and Louise - which was obviously written for the titillation of men and An Officer and a Gentleman. I thought it was meant to be a romantic classic but it's awful - misogynistic language, over long fight scenes, macho nonsense. Give me Steel Magnolias any day.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 18/08/2020 07:47

I adore it. Especially the bleeding armadillo cake.

FippertyGibbett · 18/08/2020 07:57

It’s a 90’s film, but I love Muriel’s Wedding. A real guilty pleasure !

thatone · 18/08/2020 08:04

I love it too, have re-watched several times. It's like going back to old friends.

dayswithaY · 18/08/2020 08:12

Haven't seen it for years but Desperately Seeking Susan is another peak 80s gem. Pretty in Pink is one of my all time faves, I wanted to be Andie so much!

FippertyGibbett · 18/08/2020 08:36

I want to go back to the 80’s and shag Bender from the Breakfast Club 😜

BillywilliamV · 18/08/2020 08:39

I love it less than I did because I am suddenly aware of the absolute whiteness of it all.. still love it though!

Someone9 · 18/08/2020 08:45

I love it less than I did because I am suddenly aware of the absolute whiteness of it all.

that's a bit sad really...

SenecaFallsRedux · 18/08/2020 12:41

I adore it. Especially the bleeding armadillo cake.

For me, Aunt Fern and her groom's cake is one of the funniest scenes on film. "I can do anything. Except snakes. I don't have the counter space." Grin

Spanglybangles · 18/08/2020 13:04

YABVVVU I love this film, one of my all time favourites, despite my non whiteness. Virtually know it by heart I’ve seen it so many times.

As said above it’s all about the characters and the relationship between them all, acted very well imo, especially Sally Field and the banter between Shirley MacLaine and Olympia Dukakis’ characters is brilliant. Yes it’s definitely of it’s era, but a proper feel good movie with loads of laughs as well as some tears.

It’s exactly how I like to imagine an 80’s middle class southern town. “Jackson’s from a good old southern family with good old southern values, either shoot it, stuff it or marry it!!”. One of soooo many great lines.

I may watch it (again) tonight actually Grin

YetAnotherSpartacus · 18/08/2020 13:08

I fucking hated it. It was retrogressive crap that glorified female martyrdom. Asinine shit.

TheShining · 18/08/2020 13:12

The remake is diabolical

iklboo · 18/08/2020 13:12

There's a remake?!

Graciebobcat · 18/08/2020 13:16

Yes, I was disappointed when I saw it. I mean it wasn't terrible, the performances were good but it was pretty insubstantial stuff. I'd heard people go on about how great it was and that it was one of their favourite films so my expectations were high, but it just seemed a bog standard Hollywood movie.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 18/08/2020 13:18

Love it. I don't ever seek it out but always watch when it's on.

Ouiser is by far my favourite; "you are evil and you must be destroyed" is still my go-to line when the DC are naughty!

TheWernethWife · 18/08/2020 13:27

For me, Aunt Fern and her groom's cake is one of the funniest scenes on film. "I can do anything. Except snakes. I don't have the counter space."

When Drum cuts a large slice near the tail and says "I love a good piece of ass" - love the dialogue between Shirley and Olympia, the Olympia character is definitely my role model.

Hepcat75 · 18/08/2020 13:28

I love it. It's always hard to adapt a stage play to film - particularly one which originally had no male cast members (although it was written by a bloke, I'm pretty sure). Daryl Hannah is particularly good. Of course it's about something - it's about the strength women draw from each other in times of adversity. It's about a wealthy young woman, rich and beautiful, who is willing to die to have a shot at something money can't buy. It's about a destitute young woman forging a new life. It's about older women who aren't willing to turn up their toes and die, enjoying a new love and a new career. It's about difficult relationships between mothers and daughters. It's great.

WhoresDerves · 18/08/2020 13:28

@iklboo apparently so! Had to google it, but turns out theres a 2012 remake with an all black cast, Queen Latifah plays Sally fields character
