the charmingly named Neck Gaitors? They have been my all-purpose solution to the Great Mask Dilemma of 2020. They're washable, lightweight, stylish, useful, versatile, you can wear them as a scarf and pull them up as needed, or as a hairband or even a bracelet if it's too constricting to keep it around your neck. They're cheap to order from Amazon by the half dozen--they have seriously helped me keep my sanity.

No. They meant actually difficult hmm

You're a monster. The deaths from cancer and suicide and all the other preventable miseries are on your head.

randomer · 26/07/2020 19:42

How can anybody think that a Pandemic isn't difficult? Just because we are not all running about putting up black out blinds and on rations doesn't mean it isn't difficult.

tbh, I'm OK but I feel very sorry for many groups of people.

Sorry plimpy it was a poor attempt at sarcasm. I agree with all you posted
askmehowiknow · 26/07/2020 19:49

@MrsTerryPratchett

And only the truly brave wear crotchless!

But the gimp suit wearers would be fully protected.

I'm finding this funnier than I should. I also chuckled on another post when a poster talked about wearing masks incorrectly akin to wearing sanpro on your chin!
wanderings · 26/07/2020 19:53

Also well said @Plimpy. We have made massive sacrifices at the altar of Saint Boris's incompetence, corruption and lack of balls. So if we can find more pleasant ways to cover our faces (I'm sure it was sheep syndrome that caused him to mandate this), let's crack on!

randomer · 26/07/2020 19:55

Letterbox outfits for all, I say!

Plimpy · 26/07/2020 19:56

Ah, sorry @askmehowiknow
I've been so upset by the events of the last few months that y sarcasm detector has been damaged! (In addition to my physical, mental and economic health...)

For those of you who know this mask shit is all bullshit, but are afraid of getting fined - this is your chance to do the decent thing.
It will cost you some bravery, but these are the people you are standing up for by not wearing a mask. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3969784-A-little-more-understanding-to-those-not-wearing-masks-THREAD-TWO?pg=11

Just imagine being told by a charity set up to help you to 'desensitise yourself' to your rape PTSD. To suck up the impetigo. To ignore the immense pain a mask can trigger.

This mask law is relying on us all to police each other. Don't do it!
All you need to say is 'I'm exempt' when asked to wear a mask. You can claim extreme distress at wearing a mask and for it to be true if you care about the extreme distress that people unable to wear a mask through PTSD or other disabilities are experiencing.
For every person who doesn't believe in masks not wearing a mask, it helps normalise it for those who cannot.

Be brave. Help others. DON'T wear a mask.

@Plimpy very well said

@askmehowiknow did you not see that picture that was doing the rounds of a couple (in the US maybe) that each had a sanitary towel over their face for a mask? Some day I hope to give that few fucks about what other people think Grin

Apparently it was the force of public demand, same with lockdown and quarantine of arrivals into the UK. There’s no leadership whatsoever.
ilovesooty · 26/07/2020 20:00
**@randomer* I have a sneeking suspicion that bickering about face coverings is a complete red herring to distract from other matters.*
Of course it is. Just like everything else. Saint Boris is delighted that we're frothing about this, just like he was about murderers who sit on park benches, buy Easter eggs, or don't clap for the NHS. Because while we're busily arguing about it, we're not scrutinising him.
Spot on.

In' the last couple of days, I've:
*Taken an internal flight without wearing a mask.
Took some courage but gate staff didn't question me nor did the flight crew.
*Been on two buses without being challenged
*Walked into three shops, including one with a masked staff member on the door. Wasn't challenged.

I do have mental health difficulties in my history so I can back up being exempt if necessary, which both helps and hinders.
If I can brave this despite being out of work with anxiety for three years, for the good of all of us - so can you. They will only fine you if you refuse to leave, and they shouldn't even be challenging you due to the disability exemptions.

Rise up!
Help the disabled.
Normalise not' wearing a mask.

OddBoots · 26/07/2020 20:22

Plimpy - you do what you think is the right thing and I will do what I think is the right thing. I'm going to keep reading the research as it comes in, are you too?

GeistohneGrenzen · 26/07/2020 20:24

The masks that confuse me are the ones with the 'vents'. Surely they make wearing them for CV completely pointless

Just seen this so a bit late responding. I have a couple of these masks with a single vent to the side, but counted eight layers inside which all completely cover the vent: a thin cotton lining to the outer fabric, a filter pocket for a five layer filter and double cotton for the face side of the pocket. My vented masks also have a pretty good metal strip for tightening over the nose. Maybe not all of the vented masks have these layers/filter pockets though?

Bollss · 26/07/2020 20:27
@GinDaddyRedux don’t worry, I’m probably thinking it. I do wonder if it had been marketed as keeping YOURSELF safer how very, very different responses would be.
Possibly, but that would be lying wouldnt it?

And actually, if the only person a mask kept safe, was me.... I wouldn't bother.

I don't get close to people anyway!

Plimpy · 26/07/2020 20:34

Plimpy - you do what you think is the right thing and I will do what I think is the right thing. I'm going to keep reading the research as it comes in, are you too?

Yup.

Looking like this is a mainly faecal transfer disease. That's why it is rife in hospitals, care homes, and private homes.
Likely to turn out that outside of hospitals and care homes, we just all need to wash our hands after shitting and keep our own toilets clean to be safe.

If you want to wear a mask based on the 'evidence' you've seen (which has been churned out since May 2020 and mysteriously contradicts all the RCT trials prior to it...) then have at it. I won't be judging people in person.
But, leave the people not wearing masks alone.

Terralee · 26/07/2020 20:35

My dad wears 2 hearing aids & finds that a mask pulls them off, so he uses one of those snood things.

randomer · 26/07/2020 20:36

Lordy, Plimpy, you seem like some kind of independent thinker, surely you must be banned forthwith.

LadyHofH · 26/07/2020 20:38

@Thisismytimetoshine

cover up most of my face (I'm v small). Teeny tiny? What size head have you got that your entire face fits into a surgical mask?
A small one, obviously. Though I know genetically small people are vilified on MN for being... "teeny tiny"
Plimpy · 26/07/2020 20:41

randomer

Don't worry, I've already cancelled myself several times Grin

LadyHofH · 26/07/2020 20:41

@Plimpy

If you don't believe masks do much (they don't) then don't wear anything. Rise up. Risk it. Be brave. Stand out.
Actually, I did do this in Simply Food this morning. Nobody died. The world did not stop spinning. I was buying a can of Coke, because I was hot and thirsty, and I didn't have a bastarding mask or substitute about my person.
Plimpy · 26/07/2020 20:45

LadyHofH

I salute you and would happily buy you your next can of coke!

LonelyGir1 · 26/07/2020 20:46

@KittyFantastico

It's a one way vent, or at least the ones I've seen are one way.

Correct. Often with filters too so they provide a lot of protection.
Laundrywoman · 26/07/2020 21:04

You could soak your gaiter, mask, snood etc in salt water and let
them dry naturally fora bit of extra protection.
The dried crust of salt is supposed to kill virus/germs on the mask.
