Why does MN hate smokers so much?

Not all of MN of course but I’ve seen a lot of negativity about it. I understand not liking smoking yourself because of the health issues, I’m a smoker after giving up for nearly a year and I was stupid to start again but it’s a nasty addiction to kick. I only smoke outside, in designated smoking areas, and never around people who are eating/close to other people. I also don’t smoke in places like parks or walking through town. It is either in my garden or in a designated spot. Would a smoker like that bother you, or is it people who don’t have any courtesy, or do you just not like smokers in general?

Not being aggressive at all, just very interested.

Would also like to know if anyone on here smokes themselves?

That car argument is a joke. Cars throw out toxics so, fuck it, we all should breathe in and breathe out different ones which will be even more harmful to us as individuals and those around us? Coming from the woman who thinks suicide by smoking is a great alternative to getting older as they would rather die younger anyway....sounds about right.

Notredamn · 26/07/2020 16:49

Toxins*

m0therofdragons · 26/07/2020 16:49

Apart from the fact it stinks and the smell really impacts on others even after the cigarette has been finished, we have to employ someone specifically to pick up cigarette butts from outside our hospital so yes I do associate smoking with selfishness and lack of intelligence.

SheepandCow · 26/07/2020 16:51

I'm not even a big fan of smoking anymore. I don't miss it.
I just don't like the ignorant intolerance directed towards smokers, who are contributing massively to the national pot and causing no more harm (and in many cases, less) than many other harmful activities. We also need to ensure we have properly funded well run - and safe - care homes. And protection of pension rights. No more cuts, no further increases to the pension age...If we want to encourage people to live longer.

Notredamn · 26/07/2020 16:55

So are you not going to take up smoking again in hope you die younger? I have to say, it was a very dramatic idea considering you don't even miss smoking.

In truth, I judge smokers who do not quit.

"It's a nasty addiction to kick" - yes, but many people do manage to kick it, so just grit your teeth and do it.

Minimising it - "I only smoke in designated areas etc". Again, more attempts to justify a grim personal choice.

I can't even sit next to a smoker due to the smell on clothes and breath. And that is all smokers.

SheepandCow · 26/07/2020 17:00

Suicide by smoking?? No. Just no fake concern please. If we're that concerned about people's health to the extent that they Must Not Smoke, then we need to provide decent safe homes for all - including safe well-funded care homes.

A lot of things stink. Stale alcohol, vomit, public urination (common with drunks), BO, traffic fumes, cooked fish.

You employ someone to pick up cigarette butts. That's one less person having to claim unemployment benefits.

The driving and alcohol relevance is about people in glass houses...

tellmetocalmdown · 26/07/2020 17:09

Ive never read so much rubbish in my life lmao! Smoking is cool because it provides someone a job to pick up cig butts?

LOOOOL you really are clutching at straws now. We all know smoking is horrendously bad for you, it makes you stick and it causes cancer not only to you but other people who breath in your foul smoke.

tellmetocalmdown · 26/07/2020 17:10

STINK not stick

tellmetocalmdown · 26/07/2020 17:12

Oh, and if you think lung cancer is a good, peaceful way to go then I'm afraid you have no idea what you are talking about. Fighting for every last breath is hardly a pleasant way to die.

Alsohuman · 26/07/2020 17:14

What a delicate little flower you are. How on earth do you cope with exhaust fumes, BO, cooking smells and all the other olfactory assaults you face every day? You must have your smelling salts permanently at the ready.

Notredamn · 26/07/2020 17:15

I'm not concerned, @SheepandCow but your posts have been worrying, for sure.
I agree re care homes, but the answer isn't to puff away on the cigarettes hoping for an awful early death.

SheepandCow · 26/07/2020 17:27

@Notredamn I think you've confused me with another poster. I've never advocated wishing for an awful early death (although I have said I want to avoid an awful later death). If you or anyone else wants to misinterpret my posts so be it. I can't do much about your comprehension skills.
I'm off to indulge in a large slice of cake.

VickyEadieofThigh · 26/07/2020 17:29

As I mentioned earlier, my mother's death from lung cancer was horrible. It took months - she was bedridden for almost a year and catheterised all that time, reliant on carers visiting 4 times a day. Sometimes, their visits did not coincide with her need to empty her bowels...

I could go on. My mother's faculties were entirely undiminished throughout. She knew she'd brought it on herself, too.
Seriously - if you take the "we're all going to die of something" notion, risking a long, undignified, extremely painful and terrifying death is not your best option.

Notredamn · 26/07/2020 17:29

Brb- I'm scrolling to see if I'm wrong and I'll unreservedly apologise if I am!

JessStu · 26/07/2020 17:32

20 years ago it wasn't socially acceptable to behave aggressively towards smokers, unlike now.

There has been a huge public health campaign and now people think it's ok to be rude to smokers, to their faces.

In a few years it will be fat people.

uniglowooljumper · 26/07/2020 17:35

@tellmetocalmdown

Problem drinking causes untold harm to others

So? this thread is about smoking. You are welcome to start a thread about the dangers of alcohol if you so wish. Doesnt make smoking ok.

Wind your neck in. I never said it did Hmm. I don't smoke. Don't really give a flying fuck if others do or do it outside. Don't get the hatred and ire towards people who do, what a waste of energy being negative and hateful but hey, if others want to spend their lives conjuring and harbouring such negative emotions, they can crack on. People do things all the time that harm others.
m0therofdragons · 26/07/2020 17:37

His actual job is planting flowers and tending the landscape around the hospital but instead he spends huge chunks of the day picking up cigarettes. Smokers aren’t keeping him in a job just preventing him from doing what he should be doing. Hmm My goodness, some people really are utter twats aren’t they?

Notredamn · 26/07/2020 17:37

@SheepandCow you have many posts like this. So I'm not wrong.

Why does MN hate smokers so much?
sbhydrogen · 26/07/2020 17:40

In my head the only time where it's socially acceptable to smoke is whilst walking down the street. That way, people only get a whiff of smoke for a few seconds and then it's gone. If neighbours smoke, you can smell it. If they stand outside the office door, you can smell it. In a pub garden, you can smell it.

AngryPancake · 26/07/2020 17:41

Because statistics show that smokers are more likely to be ace murderers.

AngryPancake · 26/07/2020 17:41

Ace!

Lincslady53 · 26/07/2020 17:41

My FIL was a heavy smoker for most of his life. The last 20 years were absolute misery for him with smoking related illnesses. Out of breath through COPD, several strokes, each one having a more severe effect on him than the previous one. It was a blessed release for him when he finally died 10 years ago. Meanwhile MIL had to look after him, no relaxing holidays for either of them, she couldn't manage his wheelchair, so they couldn't go out together. Then when he died, dementia had started to set in. She is still with us at 97 but her quality of life for 30 years now has been poor. Nevermind the financial cost. My partner has been totally anti smoking his whole life, but now at 66 he has the first stages of lung disease. Smoking is a filthy disgusting habit that destroys lives.

AngryPancake · 26/07/2020 17:41

AXE FUCK YOU

DishingOutDone · 26/07/2020 17:53
