Masks - GET A GRIP.

Ok.

So. Lots of whinging about masks at the moment as BoJo finally hauls his arse into gear and says that you have to wear them in the shops and on public transport.

In Catalunya where I live masks are obligatory. Every time you are in public. Including in the street. Inside and out. The exceptions are

Medical conditions (you need a paper justifying this)
When playing sport
Children under the age of 6
If eating or drinking

If you don't comply - 100 euro fine. No arguments.

Most people here were already wearing masks anyway (because we saw the horror at the beginning of the pandemic here and we know what a real lockdown is like - not allowed out at all, children locked inside for nearly 3 months, etc)

People arent whining and complaining nor imagining how they can invent aome excuse to mean that the rules don't apply to them and the overwhelming majority of people are wearing them all the time.

Tourists not so much but they getting fined. Good.

So England. PLEASE. Stop with the selfishness. Literally dozens of countries have mandatory mask wearing and citizens comply because they care about each other and don't spend their time acting entitled and "I'm all right Jack"

There are articles in the European press about this. Literally "English people are selfish - is it any wonder they are so resistant to wear masks". It's embarrassing. As a nation, as a society, it's time to grow up and just put the mask on like everyone else.

English people. You aren't special. You are starting to look like the kid who gets thw whole class detention because they just keep on breaking the rules.

Wear the mask. Please. It's for the safety of everyone.

And if you ABSOLUTELY MUST come to Spain on holiday, even more so.

@WellAmThatBad

It doesn't bother me at all if you stay in it's one less whiney person out the way complaining about wearing a mask!!

Aren't you the whiney one for calling people 'absolutely pathetic' for choosing to stay home? My mum has been shielding since the lockdown in her home, I suppose she's absolutely pathetic too.

So nasty.

CM0TD · 15/07/2020 08:53

Some people need to deal with the fact that when face coverings become mandatory you are still going to see people in shops who aren’t wearing them. And you won’t always know why, and you need to be able to handle that. By all means come and vent here if you find it stressful.

I don't see that they are whining - they are just saying what they will do. That's still allowed right? Or did I miss the memo?

WellAmThatBad · 15/07/2020 08:56

@Cadent she is in no way whatsoever pathetic. She is very sensible and this is why people shouldn't moan about wearing masks because it will help protect people like your DM when she comes out again

Fuckinellitsme · 15/07/2020 08:57

@tinkywinkyshandbag

YADNBU all these special snowflakes who can't wear one. I agree it's tough for people who lip read or if severely autistic but otherwise, get a grip. The trick is to relax, if you keep trying to take great gulps of air it sucks the mask to your face and it feels worse...just breathe normally and it's fine.
Stop being so nasty.

Lots of people who aren't severely autistic cannot wear a mask. There are myriad health/MH issues which make wearing a mask impossible.

I've seen so much ignorance and downright nastiness directed at those unable to wear masks on MN and in real life in recent days, including the peaches on here who suggested that those not wearing one should stay home indefinitely/be treated like lepers. Bear in mind that if somebody isn't wearing a mask, you have no idea of the reason why.

Remember at the start of this pandemic when so many people bleated on about how it would make them a better, kinder person? Whatever happened to that?

chocotale · 15/07/2020 08:58

I agree with you OP

snowybean · 15/07/2020 08:58

TheGreatWave · 15/07/2020 08:59

You're so funny.

There isn't really

TheGreatWave · 15/07/2020 09:01

Much more to say

WellAmThatBad · 15/07/2020 09:01

@Cadent if wearing a mask in shops will help prevent a 2nd wave will save lives and help keep people like your DM and also my DM safe what's there to moan about. I know my DM will feel safer coming out of shielding eventually and going into shops with the risk of her catching caronavirus minimised by people wearing face coverings. My comment was not supposed to be nasty at all.

TheGreatWave · 15/07/2020 09:02

(thanks to others)

I think maybe some of these people have a long way to go tbh

Cadent · 15/07/2020 09:04

@WellAmThatBad OK, understood, but I am also happy to wear a mask so people like @Fuckinellitsme don't have to. I don't agree that everyone who doesn't want to wear a mask are pathetic.

WellAmThatBad · 15/07/2020 09:12

@Cadent i read a comment on another thread someone said they won't wear a face mask for anyone and if people are ill with underlying conditions they are going to die anyway so so what if it's from caronavirus and it made my blood absolutely boil so yes i apologise for saying people are pathetic not wearing a face masks however some people have shitty selfish attitudes and think it's all about them when it's not. This pandemic is impacting on us all and we all need to pull together and follow the rules. I do hope your DM is ok and i wish you both well

Teateaandmoretea · 15/07/2020 09:15

however some people have shitty selfish attitudes and think it's all about them when it's not

And some people just call people ‘selfish’ when others don’t do what they personally want them to Wink

SoupDragon · 15/07/2020 09:25

It is what a lot of people are worried about, an insidious creep once it starts. Why exactly do you think I should have to wear a mask outside?

I'm guessing you also refuse to wear a seatbelt like you were told by The Law.

SoupDragon · 15/07/2020 09:27

Not doing soothing to help protect others just because you don't want to be told what to do? Yes, selfish. Nothing to do with "callIng people ‘selfish’ when others don’t do what they personally want them" just saying what is true.

It's pathetic TBH.

Teateaandmoretea · 15/07/2020 09:27

@SoupDragon what an utterly daft response

Teateaandmoretea · 15/07/2020 09:28

Only if you're too thick to grasp the meaning.

Love that people like me with a genuine chest complaint are being called "snowflakes" Hmm

I also find it marvelous how quick some are to show no loyalty whatsoever to your fellow countrymen over a fucking mask

SoupDragon · 15/07/2020 09:31

Yeah, your responses explain it all really.

You are told to wear a seatbelt for your own safety. Do you wear it or do you whine about being told what to do and how it is a slippery slope to something or other?
You are told to wear a mask for the safety of others. Do you wear it or do you whine about being told what to do and how it is a slippery slope to something or other?

Selfish as fuck

doyounothavegoogle · 15/07/2020 09:31

@Cadent

I'm an immigrant not an expat. I will never go back to live there.

Then why not describe yourself as Spanish rather than British?

I think its fine for me to be worried about what's happening in the UK.

Nope it’s extremely crass to rant at people when you don’t even live here.

@cadent

Don't be ridiculous. You are talking nonsense.
You have already (mistakenly) assumed that the OP is Spanish.
I am British. I am an immigrant. I live in France.
Does that make me French? No.
Why on earth would I describe myself as French?

Is everyone that lives in England English?

Should I not worry about what happens in the UK?
I have family and friends there - including one of my children.
My OH has just flown back to the UK to see his elderly mother who lives alone and has had no family visitors since the beginning of March. Excuse me for actually giving a shit about whether he is putting himself at risk.

My other child and my grandchildren lives in a different European country. Excuse me if I take an interest in what is happening there too.

The OP wasn't ranting at all. Some of the replies have appalled me by their sheer lack of comprehension. Of course there are people (in all countries around the world) who legitimately cannnot wear a mask, but the rest of us just suck it up and do it if it is required. No it's not pleasant but we don't need to come up with a range of ridiculous excuses why we shouldn't do it.

How the UK or any other countries managed the initial response is not the issue. The issue is that masks will soon be mandatory in shops in England and therefore people in England are going to have to deal with it.

If you are visiting another country for any reason then you need to abide by their rules. If I go to visit my grandchildren (yes that is allowed) then I need to abide by the rules that apply where they live.
