Masks - GET A GRIP.

Ok.

So. Lots of whinging about masks at the moment as BoJo finally hauls his arse into gear and says that you have to wear them in the shops and on public transport.

In Catalunya where I live masks are obligatory. Every time you are in public. Including in the street. Inside and out. The exceptions are

Medical conditions (you need a paper justifying this)
When playing sport
Children under the age of 6
If eating or drinking

If you don't comply - 100 euro fine. No arguments.

Most people here were already wearing masks anyway (because we saw the horror at the beginning of the pandemic here and we know what a real lockdown is like - not allowed out at all, children locked inside for nearly 3 months, etc)

People arent whining and complaining nor imagining how they can invent aome excuse to mean that the rules don't apply to them and the overwhelming majority of people are wearing them all the time.

Tourists not so much but they getting fined. Good.

So England. PLEASE. Stop with the selfishness. Literally dozens of countries have mandatory mask wearing and citizens comply because they care about each other and don't spend their time acting entitled and "I'm all right Jack"

There are articles in the European press about this. Literally "English people are selfish - is it any wonder they are so resistant to wear masks". It's embarrassing. As a nation, as a society, it's time to grow up and just put the mask on like everyone else.

English people. You aren't special. You are starting to look like the kid who gets thw whole class detention because they just keep on breaking the rules.

Wear the mask. Please. It's for the safety of everyone.

And if you ABSOLUTELY MUST come to Spain on holiday, even more so.

Whatever @SoupDragon I care not what people like you think.

Timeforanotherusername · 15/07/2020 09:48

Soup so you think we should have to wear a mask outside?

So this is what I am reading from the many comments I have seen.

1/ some are not overly happy about the rule coming in but will comply
2/ many are happy at the rule that is coming in
3/ some are so unhappy that they will chose not to go to shops
4/ some think that just because some English people moan (before it even becomes a rule) the whole nation are selfish
5/ some think that just because there are some badly behaved British holidaymakers abroad at the moment, every British person behaves badly when abroad
6/ some think that its OK if you are German and behave badly abroad - thats conveniently ignored as it doesn't fit their rant against a whole country
7/ some appear to want masks to be mandatory ojutside too and think anyone who thinks that's a step too far is selfish, even though the virus doesn't spread as much outdoors or so it seems

Not one person has said they will not wear a mask in shops. Unless they have a genuine medical reason not to wear one. And i am sure thenvast majority of these people would much rather not have the medical condition and be able to wear a mask.

So I fail to see really what the problem is? Apart from an OP that was clearly goady.

If after 24th noone is wearing a mask n England then indeed the whole country are a bunch of numpties but I very much doubt that will be the case.

When will the mask wearing end?

I think people are a little naive if they think it will just be for a couple of months. Autumn and Winter will be here by then and everyone will be full of colds. So, the hysterical masses will become even more hysterical.

Rates are so low now. Deaths from Covid are so low. People die very day of a hundred different causes. This is just another one.

Rolling, continuous media and social media has really done nobody any favours with this saga, whipping people up into frenzied, paranoid messes, convinced if they step out to go to the supermarket they will catch Coronavirus.
I actually find that one of the disgusting things about this.

Frownette · 15/07/2020 09:59

Urrrgh so now Hancock is adding to the confusion by saying you don't have to if it causes you distress and the £100 fine is only a pipeline threat.

I wish we had clearer messages. If they stated in fact most people would just get on with it. It's too muddled.

Are you sure about this? Covid is sort of "over".

Promise you won't name change if we get more spikes.

I have never name changed.

Of course there will be spikes, there will always be spikes, just like with other viruses. How long do you want everybody to live like this? Forever?

ButterMeCrumpets · 15/07/2020 10:04

I don't think mask wearing will make any difference.

However, I will wear one because I have to from the 24th.

But I will choose to alter my behaviour to minimise mask wearing by avoiding spending my money in places where mask wearing is mandatory.

sleepingpup · 15/07/2020 10:05

I'd rather it had never happened thanks. I don't want to live like this at all!

But I do WANT TO PROTECT the people shielding in my family.

Mask wearing is not for LOLs.

Timeforanotherusername · 15/07/2020 10:06

Does it matter when it ends?

The hard work in a way has been done. We have significantly reduced the number of cases of Covid.

Is wearing a mask in a shop (for the vast majority of us) really a big inconvenience.

I agree that Social Media and MSM have not helped us manage the pandemic in a sensible way. But really this is a serious illness and needs to be feared.

Surely mask wearing is a relatively simple, effective way of stopping transmission indoors.

ReturnofSaturn · 15/07/2020 10:11

No, it really should not be feared by the vast majority. It does nobody any good, in the long run, to live in perpetual fear.

No one has the divine right to live until they are 90. I know it's hard to get your head around when you are blinded by emotion, possibly by people's own circumstances of old, vulnerable loved ones. But being blinded by emotion has really not helped the thousands of people who have lost their livelihoods has it?

If that is your opinion, why is it OK for posters who live in the UK to rant about how the Spanish managed their lockdown. (other countries are available).

Didn't realise that you had to actually live (and pay taxes) in the UK to have an opinion. Maybe MN could put a special coloured symbol on the posts of people who don't live in the UK and pay taxes so that we can be easily recognised Hmm

MyFirstMyLastMyEverythingBagel · 15/07/2020 10:18

Agree with previous posters ... I will wear one because I have to. Have actually gone out this morning and bought some on preparation, including disposable ones to keep in car / handbag for emergencies.

No one has addressed though .... what about the office? Indoors for 8 hours in an open plan office with over 1000 people hot desking??

Why would I be more likey to catch in in 30 minutes in aldi with less than 100 people in store than at work indoors with over 1000 for 8 hours?Confused

Not talking about " a divine right" to live till 90. FFS.

Talking about people before they should. who would not normally die, or be left with covid related illness.

And it's spectacularly ignorant to think that this only refers to older people.

If you are able bodied and won't put on a little mask to go shopping how "blinded by emotion" is that?! A lot more.

Standardy · 15/07/2020 10:21

Murmurs are that it might be made mandatory in offices. Even if not, you can apply track and trace to an office, you cannot to a supermarket, so the preferable option rather than take everyone's details when they enter a shop is to take preventative measures.

You’re not

I guess though there is an argument that transmission in shops will be random and not as easy to contact trace/ contain.

sleepingpup · 15/07/2020 10:29

that's how rumours start.😁

@ Chanjer

Not all Brits are the laughing stock of the whole world. Some (possibly majority outside of reported Covid hot spots) of us have been commonly taking all sensible common sense Covid mitigation measures since will before our British quasi lockdown and before the senior political and scientific "leadership" fell to Covid themselves and some hypocritically breaking their own guidance. However some Brits probably prefer the Swedish style herd immunity and possibly explain some of their ignorance to danger or outright anti rule and guidance rebellion. When we Brits travel overseas we will on the whole behave and act as local do in terms of not being Covidiots reckless nor selfish.

The developer more aware world have sensibly been taking all appropriate and necessary Covid mitigation measures including some sort of PPE for all apart from babies and young children but evidently you will note from our Covid statistics as to possibly why they are off the charts compared with nearly all nations as to local British Covid indifference and attitudes towards Covid mitigation. The face covering personal protection seems to be finally mandatory but still some are seeking get out of jail cards and not doing their bit to get us out of perpetual lockdown and this ongoing paralysis surreal pause of personal and economic well being.

We hope Brits will eventually join the Covid safer world as apart from Covid we are soon to fly solo hard WTO Brexiting as Johnny no mates and possibly a less desirable international trading relationship.
