Masks - GET A GRIP.

Ok.

So. Lots of whinging about masks at the moment as BoJo finally hauls his arse into gear and says that you have to wear them in the shops and on public transport.

In Catalunya where I live masks are obligatory. Every time you are in public. Including in the street. Inside and out. The exceptions are

Medical conditions (you need a paper justifying this)
When playing sport
Children under the age of 6
If eating or drinking

If you don't comply - 100 euro fine. No arguments.

Most people here were already wearing masks anyway (because we saw the horror at the beginning of the pandemic here and we know what a real lockdown is like - not allowed out at all, children locked inside for nearly 3 months, etc)

People arent whining and complaining nor imagining how they can invent aome excuse to mean that the rules don't apply to them and the overwhelming majority of people are wearing them all the time.

Tourists not so much but they getting fined. Good.

So England. PLEASE. Stop with the selfishness. Literally dozens of countries have mandatory mask wearing and citizens comply because they care about each other and don't spend their time acting entitled and "I'm all right Jack"

There are articles in the European press about this. Literally "English people are selfish - is it any wonder they are so resistant to wear masks". It's embarrassing. As a nation, as a society, it's time to grow up and just put the mask on like everyone else.

English people. You aren't special. You are starting to look like the kid who gets thw whole class detention because they just keep on breaking the rules.

Wear the mask. Please. It's for the safety of everyone.

And if you ABSOLUTELY MUST come to Spain on holiday, even more so.

“ I agree with you, OP. 100%. Why does it need to be made a legal requirement instead of people just doing it?”

The OP is in a country where it is a legal requirement though

Fuckinellitsme · 14/07/2020 20:45

@MolyHolyGuacamole

as for those who can't wear one -- stay out of spaces that require it 🤷🏽‍♀️ this is a pandemic, there no room for rule-bending

Ah right. So those of us unable to wear a mask should not go to work, not earn a living, not do our shopping, basically stay at home until there's a vaccine. Gotcha.

Incidentally, not wearing a mask for specified reasons is not rule bending. Indeed, it's in the rules that some people are exempt. Please don't make things up.

Facemasks · 14/07/2020 20:46

The people saying "Well I just won't go out if I have to wear a mask": the rest of us don't care. Just stay at home and shut up about it.

We could be doing this for months, if not years. Either get with the programme or just be quiet.

vanillacaramelalmond · 14/07/2020 20:51

As pps have said, where is the outrage about the absolutely scandalous and shameful number of deaths that we have had in this country.

@Applesinthefridge

I agree 100% OP. The amount of people in the streets not wearing masks is astounding. This evening I walked past a pub and saw people happily sat on tables outside drinking away, tables all close to each other. Like the pandemic didn't happen. This country continues to be the laughing stock of the world...

No doubt when the second wave comes around all the morons will be clapping on their door steps again.

Just wear the mask FFS

What, so you think people in Iran or Columbia or Vanuatu are clutching their sides and roaring with laughter because some people in the UK are sitting outside pubs and drinking beer?

Riiiiiiiiight.

HesterShaw1 · 14/07/2020 20:54

There are some really fucking nasty attitudes being revealed on this thread. Judgemental, holier than thou, dogmatic and downright daft.

Changednamesorry · 14/07/2020 20:55

People who genuinely cannot wear a mask for medical reasons are obviously exempt, all they have to do is ask their doctor to provide a paper justifying this.

I have rheumatoid arthritis. If I need any kind of justification stating this then I can get it from either my GP or my rheumatologist withing 48 hours at the latest. I went to China and Japan last year and needed a note justifying me having some medications. Had it within thw hour.

Genuine medical exemption certs aren't difficult to get. Because you already have contact with your doctor and specialist when you have a medical condition.

People who all of a sudden have a "medical condition" making mask wearing impossible... Not so much.

So people who have a real medical condition..... Mask wearing by everyone else is even more important to protect them!

LakieLady · 14/07/2020 20:56

I am not paying for masks and I am not making them. I am going to wear a thong on my head and face and if anyone doesn't like it, too bad

I'm not sure a thong would provide enough protection, tbh. You need something with a good wide gusset.

How do you reduce the legholes sufficiently to stop it falling off your ears, though?

RedtreesRedtrees · 14/07/2020 20:56

This is just the start. These people will want everyone to wear a mask in public next. Perhaps we could recruit a new COVID police to enforce the rules. Could provide some employment for all the workers this bonkers policy will put out of work.

pinkgin85 · 14/07/2020 20:57

100% agree with you OP.

Yep. It wint be enough for them to have got their way with shops. They'll demand that everyone puts them on the second they set foot outside their homes. And preferably IN their homes too.
SockYarn · 14/07/2020 21:00

ll they have to do is ask their doctor to provide a paper justifying this

bollocks.

GPs have better things to do than print off pieces of paper.

How about the general public keeps their beaks out of who is wearing masks and who is not wearing masks and leaves the policing of it to, well, the Police?

I'd happily discuss medical issues or sensitive information with a police officer. Not with Doreen on the till at Asda or some randomer shrieking "wear a fucking mask" at me.

GhettoDefendant · 14/07/2020 21:00

Could provide some employment for all the workers this bonkers policy will put out of work.

Lol. You keep acting like being told to wear a mask is gonna stop more than a handful of people from going to the shops.

It's not. You may think lots of people are like you, but they're not. The vast majority of people don't give a shit about wearing a mask. It's no major trouble. A tiny inconvenience, at worst.

CM0TD · 14/07/2020 21:00

There is certainly a small (I hope) group of people for whom other people can never be compliant enough. Or other people aren’t joyful enough in their compliance, or something. People whose countries have mandated face coverings are of course behaving differently to people in countries where they are not (yet) mandated. Complaining, whinging, voicing concern, saying you’re fed up - whatever you want to call it - all still allowed. Complaining about complainers is also allowed :)

HangryChip · 14/07/2020 21:00

I dont know anyone irl who makes a fuss about the new mask rule. I dont appreciate you calling me / English people embarrassing, childish and entitled. Totally groundless. Go to the continent and stick to European press, if we are embarrassing you.

GhettoDefendant · 14/07/2020 21:01

FWIW, there are a fair few countries where it's mandatory to wear them in public full stop. Hasn't been any issue. 99.9% of people going about their life no differently, except wearing a mask in public. I know because I live in one of them.

gnomeisland · 14/07/2020 21:03

RedtreesRedtrees

Not wearing masks is already a massive deterrent for many people.

What on earth is your issue with wearing a simple covering? You could just have a scarf placed loosely over your nose. It's no big deal. But it protects others around you.
And it will allow you to continue shopping and saving the shops you seem to care about so much.
Win win.

BerriesAndLeaves · 14/07/2020 21:04

There are articles in the European press about this. Literally "English people are selfish - is it any wonder they are so resistant to wear masks". It's embarrassing. As a nation, as a society, it's time to grow up and just put the mask on like everyone else
As you insist on stereotyping an entire nation, I'm afraid that includes you too op as you are English. I'm sure you won't mind me telling you to stop being selfish, grow up and put your mask on. You don't get to stereotype us and exclude yourself. You're not special. You're selfish English laughing stock like all other English people.

RedtreesRedtrees · 14/07/2020 21:04

Ghetto it’s not enough at this stage. We need everyone back shopping at pre-COVID levels as quickly as possible if we’re going to save businesses and jobs. You can doubt it, but this will deter people from going to shops and, once there, reduce dwell times.

GhettoDefendant · 14/07/2020 21:06

You can doubt it, but this will deter people from going to shops and, once there, reduce dwell times

I don't just "doubt" it. I know for certain you're wrong.

RedtreesRedtrees · 14/07/2020 21:06

Gnome if you’d actually read any of the research you’d know that tieing a scarf loosely over your nose has virtually no benefit.

RedtreesRedtrees · 14/07/2020 21:07

Ghetto oh ok Confused

MolyHolyGuacamole · 14/07/2020 21:08

People who genuinely cannot wear a mask for medical reasons are obviously exempt, all they have to do is ask their doctor to provide a paper justifying this.

This is my issue with this. It's not happening here, people can just say they've got a disability so they don't have to wear one.

And yes, you should stay out of places that require them to be worn if you absolutely cannot wear one. Masks don't protect the wearer as well as they protect others, and sorry but I don't want you coughing on me on public transport in closed quarters 🤷🏽‍♀️ you aren't more important than me.

Online deliveries are now back, many people getting slots. And unless you work in a shop, it's likely that it won't be mandatory in your workplace.
