Masks - GET A GRIP.

Ok.

So. Lots of whinging about masks at the moment as BoJo finally hauls his arse into gear and says that you have to wear them in the shops and on public transport.

In Catalunya where I live masks are obligatory. Every time you are in public. Including in the street. Inside and out. The exceptions are

Medical conditions (you need a paper justifying this)
When playing sport
Children under the age of 6
If eating or drinking

If you don't comply - 100 euro fine. No arguments.

Most people here were already wearing masks anyway (because we saw the horror at the beginning of the pandemic here and we know what a real lockdown is like - not allowed out at all, children locked inside for nearly 3 months, etc)

People arent whining and complaining nor imagining how they can invent aome excuse to mean that the rules don't apply to them and the overwhelming majority of people are wearing them all the time.

Tourists not so much but they getting fined. Good.

So England. PLEASE. Stop with the selfishness. Literally dozens of countries have mandatory mask wearing and citizens comply because they care about each other and don't spend their time acting entitled and "I'm all right Jack"

There are articles in the European press about this. Literally "English people are selfish - is it any wonder they are so resistant to wear masks". It's embarrassing. As a nation, as a society, it's time to grow up and just put the mask on like everyone else.

English people. You aren't special. You are starting to look like the kid who gets thw whole class detention because they just keep on breaking the rules.

Wear the mask. Please. It's for the safety of everyone.

And if you ABSOLUTELY MUST come to Spain on holiday, even more so.

@CherryCocktails totally agree with this - I can imagine those who don't want to wear one will do so to appease the masses (for a quieter life) and to avoid a fine - so, yes, I agree that they and some others will probably just wear the same mask all day or keep it on them taking it off, putting it on etc. throughout a day or week - I've read evidence to suggest that bacteria inside the mask plus CO2 build-up can and does cause respiratory problems too - this is why I firmly believe it should be a choice, not mandatory - those who are shit scared can wear one and those who feel perfectly well and have adjusted to social distancing and not talking to anyone when they shop can carry on regardless.
Shaming on both sides is what is pissing me off tbh. So, the OP needs to "get a grip" and stop making sweeping statements about those "English" ppl who apparently don't like being careless sheep 🙄

CM0TD · 14/07/2020 20:24

I don’t understand who isn’t “getting a grip”. The U.K. population was apparently “too compliant” with lockdown. So was it the rule-followers who didn’t have a grip or the “flouters”? Face covering isn’t mandatory yet. It’s still legal to complain about things we don’t like. People who want everyone to wear face coverings will just have to keep their shit together until next week and then they can start complaining about people not “getting a grip” if compliance is too low for their liking (or will we all be “too compliant” again?).

I’m not against face covering in many circumstances, but I am against people being told not to air their concerns about this sort of thing. A theme on Mumsnet throughout this crisis has been “you mustn’t just comply with restrictions, you must be grateful for them”

Chicchicchicchiclana · 14/07/2020 20:25

Yanbu! I don't care about people's private feelings about masks ... just stop creating a million threads about it on Mumsnet.

gnomeisland · 14/07/2020 20:26

RedtreesRedtrees

I really dislike wearing masks and other PPE, but it's a fact of life already for large swathes of the population on a daily basis. Can't say I've ever encountered anyone that enjoys wearing it. But we all have to get on with life.

If you choose to exclude yourself and your children from scenarios where you need PPE that's your choice.
I thank you for clarifying that you don't have an issue with the need for PPE

Chicchicchicchiclana · 14/07/2020 20:26

44,000 people have died already and people are complaining about wearing face coverings. It's almost unbelievable.

Hopeisnotastrategy · 14/07/2020 20:27

I've been out in Spain throughout lockdown, finally going home tomorrow.

You are absolutely right OP. It's embarrassing. If people out here can wear masks in 40 degrees plus, then so can the British social meeja warriors.

Anything else is deeply disrespectful to the rest of society and frontline health workers who have to deal with this. Spot on.

Monkeynuts18 · 14/07/2020 20:29

Maybe I’m missing something but I haven’t heard many people complain about wearing masks at all. Everyone I’ve spoken to in real life about it has just been of the view that if that’s the price of returning to some form of normality then so be it.

I know in the US there was massive resistance to mask wearing among some sections of the population (including the president) but that’s not England, obviously.

VenusTiger · 14/07/2020 20:30

@macaroniandpizza you're counting the ones out there shopping - you're not counting the ones who don't want to wear a mask or can't staying at home and effing up the high street - I've seen so many tweets from Scots, most in the Highlands where there are zero cases who are refusing to go about with masks on so are now ordering online - it's going to hurt the high street. Social distancing was much better imo.

MooneyBadger · 14/07/2020 20:30

*I get fed up of people coming on to remind us how we should all do as they tell us."

So much this.

The sanctimonious headgirl-wannabes practically wetting themselves at the opportunity to tell everyone what to do. And it's not enough to obey the rules - we must all do so with sufficient enthusiasm lest other people should feel embarrassed or ashamed.

RedtreesRedtrees · 14/07/2020 20:30

Gnomeisland I’m only cutting out visits to shops which if enough people do will bring about a government u-turn pretty sharpish. I’m unconvinced in the merits of everyone wearing masks.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 14/07/2020 20:30

Agree wholeheartedly. And as for those who can't wear one -- stay out of spaces that require it 🤷🏽‍♀️ this is a pandemic, there no room for rule-bending. Funny how people in other countries are just getting on with it. NZ also shut their schools to everyone, they had to make alternate arrangements, it's only here that everyone has a tantrum. We're looking more and more like the USA, it's a joke 🤡 🤡 🤡

CM0TD · 14/07/2020 20:32

Chicchicchicchiclana really by not hiding the thread you are just exposing yourself to views that are going to annoy you. If you can’t handle people complaining about discomfort, when they will almost certainly comply with the rules once they come into force, then just hide the threads and don’t add it to your “threads I’m on” list

Changednamesorry · 14/07/2020 20:34

The thing is that those who keep repeating if you want to wear one, fine but don't impose your view on others are fundamentally not understanding that masks protect others.

Not you.

So for those who genuinely can't wear them, really medically can't..... If that's the case surely they would be begging people who can to do so to protect them.

I have a friend who has very severe asthma. She doesn't wear a mask. If we see her we will be doubling up on our masks to protect her. She's not moaning about mask laws BECAUSE THEY KEEP HER SAFER.

BluebellsareBlue · 14/07/2020 20:34

@CallmeAngelina I'm in Scotland and we are wearing masks. No one that I am aware of complaining about it, but take to twitter and you will see there is a LOT of complaint from those in England about this and how they will refuse to wear one etc.

CherryCocktails · 14/07/2020 20:35

Thing is I don't think it's just the ones who don't want to wear a mask who will do that.

Some people in general will just think mask =safe and won't always think about the strict hygiene aspects around using one.

Masks shouldn't be worn then kept in a pocket or bag and then re-used again when you go into another shop or kept in your car after use to use again.

They should be put on, hands washed, not touched. Then taken off and either disposed of or put for washing. Then hands washed again.

VenusTiger · 14/07/2020 20:35

@CM0TD hear! hear! None of us here know how long we will be expected to wear masks for, each of us edging closer and closer together in shops and queues - no thanks!

Changednamesorry · 14/07/2020 20:35

And I'm no "head girl type". I'm just a "pro keeping other people safe by making a very minor change" type.

Always good to generalise about an entire nation Hmm

LakieLady · 14/07/2020 20:36

Oh god. Not another bloody mask thread. Can we have a mask board for people to Wang on about this shit somewhere else please?

No-one's forcing you to read it!

gnomeisland · 14/07/2020 20:37

RedtressRedtrees

Great, if all the selfish non-mask wearers stop going to the shops the rest of us can finally get out there.
There's a wealth of data out there from around the world on the merit of wearing masks. Do some more reading if you are unconvinced.

LEELULUMPKIN · 14/07/2020 20:38

Well I am English and flying to Catalunya in the morning. I have all my masks at the ready so it's a bit of a generalisation OP.

Midnight0 · 14/07/2020 20:38

I agree with you, OP. 100%. Why does it need to be made a legal requirement instead of people just doing it? How many threads have we seen here where people are weeeh weeeh, how can anyone tell me what to do? Just fekkin wear that mask. I come from a country where there are a lot less deaths (I mean, A LOT LESS), and people still wear masks, because they care about other people.

Applesinthefridge · 14/07/2020 20:42

I agree 100% OP. The amount of people in the streets not wearing masks is astounding. This evening I walked past a pub and saw people happily sat on tables outside drinking away, tables all close to each other. Like the pandemic didn't happen. This country continues to be the laughing stock of the world...

No doubt when the second wave comes around all the morons will be clapping on their door steps again.

Just wear the mask FFS

RedtreesRedtrees · 14/07/2020 20:43

Gnomeisland lol there won’t be any shops left for you to go to. Most high street shops are on the brink. Any policy that deters people from going out will finish them. I’ve read extensively in the peer reviewed research and the conclusions are mixed.
