AIBU to think that any political representative, especially one who is supposed to represent women, is nuts for saying this?

Do you have a link to the article?

haggistramp · 29/06/2020 20:45

It was declared on Twitter on the persons page. I just find it mindblowing that someone in a position of responsibility would say that. I understand that this person is not an MP or MSP, but I am assuming that they have been elected as womens leader within the SNP and I cant reconcile this view with that position.

There are words. She has put them together in an attempt at constructing something she wants to convey- I think? But it doesn’t make sense to me. What is it she is trying to say? What’s rape got to do with having a nuclear family? The fuck am I reading 🤷‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

PicsInRed · 29/06/2020 21:01

I'll hear her out.

But she'll have to put forth a coherent argument first. 🤷‍♀️

WaterOffADucksCrack · 29/06/2020 21:07

What are their reasons behind it?

Zoikes · 29/06/2020 21:08

and there was me thinking that men being rapey was at the heart of rape culture...

DamnYankee · 29/06/2020 21:09

But she'll have to put forth a coherent argument first

^ This. And use punctuation. Hmm

SarahAndQuack · 29/06/2020 21:10

Is it a clumsy way of saying most rape is not stranger rape, or most child abuse is by family members?

That's all I can think of. I think she's misunderstood what 'nuclear family' means.

Yeahyeah9 · 29/06/2020 21:11

shes saying its not the gays that are the main culprits committing rape . its the straight nulclear men. its just poorly worded

ArriettyJones · 29/06/2020 21:12

@Zoikes

and there was me thinking that men being rapey was at the heart of rape culture...
You and me both. Numpties, both of us. 🙄
UnaCorda · 29/06/2020 21:14

Peadophilia? Hmm

Khadernawazkhan · 29/06/2020 21:15

What an utter imbicile. Anything to undermine the primary building block of stable societies.

DingDongDenny · 29/06/2020 21:20

Yes, I think she is just saying most rapists are straight and not gay. I'm sure it's probably true - but she is confusing straight men and nuclear family, not the same thing

Yeahyeah9 · 29/06/2020 21:20

well.. its factually correct though

WarmSausageTea · 29/06/2020 21:23

Top quality word salad.

haggistramp · 29/06/2020 21:25

Straight men are at the heart of rape culture. I dont see what this has to do with the nuclear family. I dont think it comes off as misworded, just unhinged.

I think Teddy is possibly referring to the whole debate going on in some quarters around sex education at the moment, where very suspect material which some see as grooming children is being used or advocated. I sincerely hope Teddy isn't a women's officer.

haggistramp · 29/06/2020 21:26

@warmsausage you've suumed it up completely.

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 29/06/2020 21:27

'She' is the epitome of the patriarchy.

CluelessBaker · 29/06/2020 21:28

I expect she’s making the point that 34% of juvenile rape victims were abused by a member of their family, so people focusing exclusively or overwhelmingly on LGBT+ educators (as has happened several times recently) are spectacularly missing the point.

MrFaceyRomford · 29/06/2020 21:31

I cannot comment because I cannot make head nor tail of what it is she is trying to say (if anything).

donquixotedelamancha · 29/06/2020 21:31

They is not a she, they is a they.

I also think they is not a women's officer anymore (though they had a more prominent beard when they were and still wasn't a she).

I think now they is LGBTQIA++ officer or similar. They did not mean the more intelligent suggestions put forward above, they genuinely want to dismantle the nuclear family.

AnneOfCreamCables · 29/06/2020 21:44

They are trying to distract from the accusations of grooming that have beset certain sectors, and possibly also to distract from the paedophile community on Twitter.
It would be more accurate to say men are at the heart of rape culture. But that doesn't suit their agenda.

Thelnebriati · 29/06/2020 21:44

As an alternative POV, here are two tweets/threads that discuss pedophilia and rape.
I don't agree with everything posted; I am using them as an example of the standard of debate I would expect to see in politics.

''Thread: A carceral attitude against rapists is not pro-survivor.
I think we are raised to see incarceration of the person who hurt us as “justice.” For a lot of reasons, I’m completely convinced that it is not.''
twitter.com/philawsostef/status/1146393742229876736

(in response to a tweet advocating castrating offenders)
''Why? There is no point when recidivism is extremely low to begin with, and being castrated suggests the issue is the sex drive. It is not. The issue is whatever motivated the rape, typically power and control, but the nuances are not that simple.''
