Like I said, breakfast at the Conway house must be quite something:

Quite a girl, that Claudia Conway!

Jaichange This article addresses possible GOP contenders for 2024 - but maybe opportunity will come knocking earlier if Trump decides he needs "to spend more time with his family"...? (I'm not sure that they will be everyone's cup of tea covfefe though)

Thank you for that link, @TheNorthWestPawsage, it made quite depressing reading. But it led me to this article, which I find a little more encouraging, about why Trump is losing popularity amongst white voters.

US buys entire world supply of anti covid drug Remdesivir

Thank goodness that dexamethasone is cheap and out of patent

Lweji · 01/07/2020 08:21

It's not a cure, though.

Goes to show everyone was right in suspecting the worst back in March, when the US tried to get CareVac to move its vaccine research from Germany to a US lab.

You never, ever lose by thinking the worst with the Trump administration. You lose if you give them the benefit of the doubt.

So true.

How sweet to buy up the drug which is used against Ebola, so there is none for anyone else. Bad luck, DRC, about the Ebola there. Still, they are only in Africa, probably a shit-hole country, so who cares about them eh?

Trump is unspeakable.

As for “We’re in uncharted territory with pricing a new medicine, a novel medicine, in a pandemic,” Gilead’s chief executive, Dan O’Day, said, what he means is "we don't yet know how much we can bleed people for". That it is neither a new drug nor particularly life-saving makes the money-grubbing even more despicable.

And as Wikipedia points out

The most common adverse effects in studies of remdesivir for COVID‑19 include respiratory failure and organ impairment, including low albumin, low potassium, low count of red blood cells, low count of platelets that help with clotting, and yellow discoloration of the skin. Other reported side effects include gastrointestinal distress, elevated transaminase levels in the blood (liver enzymes), and infusion site reactions.

Other possible side effects of remdesivir include:

Infusion‐related reactions. Infusion‐related reactions have been seen during a remdesivir infusion or around the time remdesivir was given. Signs and symptoms of infusion‐related reactions may include: low blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, sweating, and shivering.
Increases in levels of liver enzymes, seen in abnormal liver blood tests. Increases in levels of liver enzymes have been seen in people who have received remdesivir, which may be a sign of inflammation or damage to cells in the liver.

Triffic, innit?

PerkingFaintly · 01/07/2020 11:31

The only plus point is that Remdesivir wasn't found to be that effective for Ebola. After preliminary trial results it was dropped in favour of other drugs.

Familiar name in the last para of this Dec 2019 article!

PerkingFaintly · 01/07/2020 11:43

I meant, plus point to the loss of remdesivir for Ebola patients.

The side-effects and Trump-grabbing are hardly positive.

I'm boggling though. Who is Trump planning to channel this drug to?

Can't find the ref just now, but from these threads I remember one federal dept (FEMA? State) hoarded PPE and its website was changed to remove the reference to "on behalf of the states". Wasn't one of the Trump Jrs referring to it as "our" PPE?

Sooo... "our" remdesivir? Who is it for?

Or is it just meant as news titbit for the cheering crowds, and vials will be shipped with a pic of the orange one gurning on them, like he wanted his signature to appear on federal cheques?

Remdesivir was originally developed as an anti-malarial, back in 2009, but it didn't work; so it has been repurposed, not terribly successfully, more than once since then. Seems to be like the well-known cure for no known disease, as my mother used to call ginseng. What I feel we want to know at this point is how much Trump stands to gain from Gilead Sciences doing well? Will they be giving him lots of money, or is it simply that they have some negatives? (Still waiting to see what the Russians publish once he is no longer their useful idiot.)

From CNN:
The White House used a last-minute briefing Tuesday to continue defending President Donald Trump against accusations he let languish intelligence about Russia paying bounties to the Taliban for killing American troops. Announced an hour ahead of time, the briefing came as Trump’s election-year rival Joe Biden accused the President of shirking his duties as commander in chief by not acting on the intelligence when it first appeared in the President’s Daily Brief, the highly classified summary of the nation’s secrets.

The White House has insisted the information was neither verified nor credible, and said it didn’t reach Trump because there was no consensus within the intelligence community about its veracity. Yet the information about Russian bounties was included in a President’s Daily Brief sometime in the spring, according to a US official with direct knowledge of the latest information. That assessment, the source said, was backed up by “several pieces of information” that supported the view that there was an effort by the Russian intelligence unit — the GRU — to pay bounties to kill US soldiers, including interrogation of Taliban detainees and electronic eavesdropping.

Trump is not known to fully or regularly read the PDB, something that is well-known within the White House. He is instead orally briefed two or three times a week by his intelligence officials. Without confirming whether the information was included in the written document — something she claimed she would never “sit here and confirm or deny” — press secretary Kayleigh McEnany insisted Trump does read.

“The President does read and he also consumes intelligence verbally,” she said when questioned why Trump isn’t reading the PDB. “This President, I will tell you, is the most informed person on planet Earth when it comes to the threats we face,” McEnany added, pointing to regular phone calls between Trump and his national security adviser Robert O’Brien. “He is constantly being informed and briefed on intelligence matters. But I’m not going to allow The New York Times to dictate when we give top-secret information and don’t give top-secret information.”
