Sad to say it, but your first para applies to some of what's happening to us over here Across
I've just been a bit shocked at some awarding of massive contracts to companies connected with a politician and an adviser, without going through due process. I'm wary as to what's going on here and then we have the nightmare of a no deal Brexit. I feel very twitchy.

HoldMyLobster · 13/07/2020 15:46

Something I've noticed a lot recently is friends here in the US saying that they were until now committed Republicans, but they're so horrified at Trump that they're voting Democrat this year.

Many of them are saying they deeply regret voting for him.

Many of them are saying they deeply regret voting for him.

I hope there are a lot of people who feel that way!

Or if they can't bring themselves to vote Dem they just don't vote at all.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 13/07/2020 19:31

I absolutely hate having to defend a Trump of any sort over anything, but

I had a look at that book cover, and the punctuation is correct if you take "the Democrat" as being like "save the whale!" In that construction (whose name I cannot for the life of me remember, but I know it exists) the whale is taken as meaning all whales. So the Democrat can be taken as meaning all Democrats.

"The Democrat's defence" is an attempt to draw the mind to "The last refuge of the scoundrel", I suppose.

Mind you, I definitely wouldn't myself have used a construction that is so easily read as an ignorant mistake. Not on the cover of a book I wouldn't.

lionheart · 13/07/2020 19:34

The generic Democrat?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 13/07/2020 19:41

That does sound right. Thank you.

AcrossthePond55 · 13/07/2020 20:30

I'll stand proudly as a 'Generic Democrat' 😆

So, we're dialing back here in California due to the increased rates of Covid-19. My county is on the 'monitor' list and is being rolled WAY back and I don't have a problem with it.

The Dark Side

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 14/07/2020 08:50

Someone has pointed this out to me: on 10th December last year, at a rally in Pennsylvania, the Great Orange Pumpkin said, and I quote,

"You know all of the promises that I made. I'm the only politician in history that I've actually kept more promises than I made. Think of that. In other words, I made it here like a thing like Right to Try. Nobody talked about Right to Try. We got Right to Try, that somebody terminally ill. We have the greatest medicines in the world, the greatest doctors, the greatest labs in the world, nobody close, but it takes years to get it approved and I got it approved."

(What "it" was seems never to have been made clear.)

factba.se/transcript/donald-trump-speech-kag-rally-hershey-pennsylvania-december-10-2019 and you have to scroll down a bit. The whole thing is there, and if you want incoherence it's a fine example.

PerkingFaintly · 14/07/2020 10:21

GrinLweji. I think the recorder chorus of the Imperial March really captures it.

Also the one about:
"How many Republicans does it take to change a light bulb?"
"None. Trump just says it's fixed and the rest of them sit in the dark and applaud."

Although to be fair, a lot of ordinary Republicans aren't drinking the Kool-Aid. And indeed Mueller and Comey were Republicans.

Maybe it should be "How many Trumpies does it take to change a lightbulb?"

TheSparklyPussycat · 14/07/2020 11:36
When I originally that video (without the music), I thought it looked like a dictator and his entourage. All those black masks! I wonder who decided the colour, and how...
PerkingFaintly · 14/07/2020 12:08

I'm ROFLing at the way they had to put a little presidential seal on Trump's mask.

I can just hear them coaxing him to wear it. "Look Donny, you can have the plaster with the Mickey on it! There, all better now!"

lionheart · 14/07/2020 12:28

A marketing opportunity.

Roussette · 14/07/2020 12:33

Can anyone throw any light on this from yesterday?! (This is a rhetorical question, I know the answer is No!)

At his press conference...
“We have one of the lowest mortality rates anywhere,” the president said before pivoting to an attack on Barack Obama and Joe Biden, the presumptive 2020 Democratic nominee.

“Biden and Obama stopped their testing,” Trump said. “They just stopped it. You probably know that. I’m sure you don’t want to report it. But they stopped testing. Right in the middle, they just went, ‘No more testing.’”

crosseyedMary · 14/07/2020 12:34

I think they tried to make it look like a scene from a gangster film where the 'heavies' turn up

Lweji · 14/07/2020 13:09

When I originally that video (without the music), I thought it looked like a dictator and his entourage.

Wait... isn't it? You can be an elected dictator.

Lweji · 14/07/2020 13:11

I'm getting a few notifications from the WP, but behind a paywall, about Fauci and scapegoating.

Lweji · 14/07/2020 13:23

But...

www.cnn.com/2020/07/13/politics/can-trump-fire-fauci/index.html

Not easily.

BruceAndNosh · 14/07/2020 13:32

The setting Fauci up as a scapegoat is worrying.
I can't find it now but I read an article within the last two days which quoted some WH official saying "Fauci doesn't have the president's best interests at heart" Well, he shouldn't! He's not there as Trumps cheerleader, he's got the PUBLIC's best interest at heart.
But how the hell is Fauci meant to get the public on board when the bloody President is retweeting guff about the CDC lying and the whole thing being a hoax?

Roussette · 14/07/2020 14:17

I think it's awful. It's like BoJo tweeting about how Chris Whitty is wrong about loads of things. I'm sure he has been wrong about some stuff because COVID was an unknown quantity but if the Chief Medical Officer and the PM don't present a united front, we're buggered.

And then I hear McNinny having a poke at Fauci, and that was enough. Trying to justify why the WH had disagreed with Fauci etc.

AcrossthePond55 · 14/07/2020 14:47

To show just how depraved the Scrotus Regime is, they've reinstated the Federal death penalty. Now, if anyone 'deserved' the death penalty it's the guy that was just executed. BUT it wasn't reinstated for the purposes of 'carrying out justice'. It was reinstated to earn 'brownie points' (aka votes) with a certain demographic for the upcoming election.

BruceAndNosh · 14/07/2020 14:48

From yesterdays Press Briefing
McNinny came out with this gem
"But overall, the notion of the tweet was to point out the fact that when we use science, we have to use it in a way that is not political"

I can't believe she was able to say that without laughing.
The entire approach to fighting CV has been blatantly political, ignoring science when it is not suiting the Trump cause.

(BTW, I was astounded to discover that McNinny is a Graduate of Harvard Law School. How can someone so potentially intelligent be so devoid of critical thinking?)

Roussette · 14/07/2020 14:54

I find McNinny infuriating. Absolutely infuriating. It's like she's an AI robot planted to spout the party line.

Couldn't stand Sanders and Spicer either but at least they had some sort of personality whether you liked that personality or not.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 14/07/2020 15:07

When Trump says,
“Biden and Obama stopped their testing,” Trump said. “They just stopped it. You probably know that. I’m sure you don’t want to report it. But they stopped testing. Right in the middle, they just went, ‘No more testing.’”
what testing does he think that Biden and Obama were doing? I mean, testing for what? In whom? When? He does know Covid19 didn't exist when either of them was in power, right?

I think what he meant was that in the matter of testing for Covid19
“I stopped testing. I just stopped it. You probably know that. I’m sure you don’t want to report it. But I stopped testing. Right in the middle, I just went, ‘No more testing.’”

It is an autopilot reaction in him, to say that someone else (almost always a political opponent, which explains Biden and Obama in this case) did what he did himself.
