xxyz if you knew anything about judaism you would know there a large anti-zionist movements in it. Especially hasidic and orthodox jews in Israel and New York.

Somethingkindaoooo · 04/06/2020 17:14

@ChampagneCommunist

Being a Zionist (which you can be without being Jewish) does not automatically mean you are anti-Palestinian.

Zionism is the belief that Jews have the right to self-determination in their own nation state. It is not, never has been, the support for Israeli governments/politics.

It does not mean that Palestinians should not have their own nation state too.

Anti-Zionism says that Jews should not have their own nation state.

Yep... that's what I wanted to say too

😊

BlackKite · 04/06/2020 17:16

Bit saddened to find that the very concept of being a zionism is seen as inherently bad by some people.

xxyzz · 04/06/2020 17:19

user1471565182 - if you knew anything at all about Judaism, you would know that the number of anti-Zionist Jews is tiny. By no means all charedim ie ultra-Orthodox Jews oppose Zionism. It really is a tiny, tiny number of Jews - as the Full Fact link showed.

But yes, I believe a poster on MN with the username user with some random numbers more than Full Fact. Hmm

xxyzz · 04/06/2020 17:21

BlackKite - it is sad but hardly a surprise.

The far right and far left have always opposed Jewish self-determination. One of many areas they both agree, unfortunately.

xxyzz · 04/06/2020 17:23

As I said, I'm fairly sure this pile on on Rachel is because she has recently been posting both in support of Black Lives Matter and women's rights.

And there will be those on the far right and supposed far left who want to attack her for this.

I think she's Lovely;
In thought, word and deed.

Totally support her in calling out anti-semitism where it exists.

If you knew anything about Judaism you would know that anti-Zionist Jews:
a) are a tiny minority of Jews
b) still believe that there will be a Jewish return to the land of Israel, they just believe that the Messiah must come first and lead the Jews there (they believe it was wrong for Jews to move to Israel before the coming of the Messiah)

SiaPR · 04/06/2020 17:29

she has recently been posting both in support of Black Lives Matter and women's rights.
Rachel regularly throws women under the bus. It’s all for woke points.

Wasabiaddiction · 04/06/2020 17:30

She is a strong brave woman who put her head above the parapet to defend British Jews.

The majority of British Jews including me and my family are Zionists. We support the idea that Jews have a right to self determination. So I don't regard that as a slur.

lydia7986 · 04/06/2020 17:30

And there is nothing wrong with being a Zionist, to the antisemites on this thread who insist there is.

Zionism is nothing more than the Jewish right to self-determination in the indigenous Jewish homeland.

1forsorrow · 04/06/2020 17:33

Unfortunately the self determination in their homeland meant other people losing their homes.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 04/06/2020 17:34

I dislike Rachel Riley because of her past behaviour wrt the T shirt with the doctored photo of Jeremy Corbyn's anti -apartheid protest and the falsehoods she tried to spread about Mandela's opinions of him. She chose to erase an anti- apartheid message in order to promote her issues with Corbyn. How much did black lives matter to her at that moment I wonder?

1forsorrow · 04/06/2020 17:35

It does not mean that Palestinians should not have their own nation state too. So does Zionism support the return of land and homes to Palestinians?

HeadingForRainbows · 04/06/2020 17:39

Iwalkinmyclothing

Good point

giantangryrooster · 04/06/2020 18:23

I actually reported this thread a while ago. Can anyone explain why this is OK by mn, but any thread on say sue Radford or the like is zapped?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 04/06/2020 18:25

Israel has repeatedly tried to pursue a two-state solution. The Palestinians have walked away every single time because they refuse to recognise that the state of Israel exists.

Being a Zionist does not involve any political stance, or an endorsement of the government of Israel. It simply means support for a Jewish state? Why wouldn't you support the idea of a Jewish state? Can you explain please?

I think the main argument made is that the Palestinians owned the land for thousands of years and then Balfour arbitrarily gave away some of their land for somebody else to set up their own state.

If I had some sphere of influence in the UK and I knew that you wanted to set up your own state, so, although being unconnected with the country myself, told you that you could have the northern part of France (including Paris) - and you then went in militarily to claim it - I can't imagine the French being very impressed by your declaration of statehood, including their most major city, nor too willing to share and seek a two-state solution.

Of course, Religious Jews (along with many Christians) believe that the land was given to them by God, to belong to them and their descendants forever (which Muslims obviously do not accept), which is where the whole tinderbox ignites perpetually.

Support for a Jewish state - all good. Support for a state purely for Jews, in which Palestinians have no right to vote, are stripped of their land and are totally disenfranchised- not so good. Not hard to understand.

Ah yes, those pesky anti-semitic African countries.......Or perhaps, having being victims of centuries of colonialism and oppression they empathise with the Palestinians and their desire for self determination, no? Just another view.

Also pp who said Jews who oppose Zionism are rare - that hasn’t been my experience. A lot of left wing Jewish people I’ve met, do too.[/quote]
Palestinians in Israel have many more rights than under Hamas.

The right to vote for a party other than Hamas, the right to be gay, the right to practice a religion of their choice, the right to be equal if they're female, the right not to watch anti-Semitic cartoons or read anti-Semitic textbooks if they're kids. There are many more.

The African countries you support would do better to support a two-state solution. The world does not need an Islamist state run by Hamas.

You should educate yourself. Not hard to understand.

SuckingDieselFella · 04/06/2020 18:36

Rachel Riley is a woman.

You've just thrown her under a bus.

What kind of points are you posting for?

"I think the main argument made is that the Palestinians owned the land for thousands of years and then Balfour arbitrarily gave away some of their land for somebody else to set up their own state."

Yep, that's the Hamas argument.

Jews, Christians and Arabs all lived there. But for some reason those who support the Hamas version of a Palestinian state won't acknowledge this. How can anyone 'militarily claim' a land where their ancestors have lived for thousands of years? Of all the different groups who lived there, only the Palestinians have a right to it? What a peaceful tolerant view.

Hamas and their supporters want to drive every Jew in Israel into the sea. Have you bothered to read the Hamas Charter? Sometimes I wonder if their supporters in the west know this. Other times it seems like they know exactly what they're doing.

Katinski · 04/06/2020 19:19

I like RR and also Susie Dent and they're great friends btw. They giggle a lot togetherSmile

Floatyboat · 04/06/2020 19:49

Yep, that's the Hamas argument.

Its kind of accurate though. Were any Palestinians displaced from the land on which they were born by the creation of Israel?

The creation of Israel has been devastating for Palestinians.

mintandcoral · 04/06/2020 19:54

Rachel Riley is that you?

SuckingDieselFella · 04/06/2020 19:57

The creation of Israel has been devastating for Palestinians.

Palestinian terrorism has been devastating for Israelis.
