Favourite old children’s shows

Sorry for shamelessly using AIBU for traffic!

I’m pregnant and feeling nostalgic for the children’s tv shows of my childhood! My absolute favourite was Old Bear Stories (from the Jane Hissey books), and I’ve just seen it’s all on YouTube so I can’t wait to show them to my baby!

What were your favourites, and do you think they beat out the Pepper Pigs of today?

@EdinaMonsoon you’re thinking of Come Back Lucy. Scared the bejeezus out of me.

EdinaMonsoon · 24/05/2020 07:53

@maddiemookins16mum Thank you! I also finally found the name of the panda program... Issi Noho! Anyone else remember it?

Greyhair59 · 24/05/2020 08:53

Loved Follyfoot with handsome Steve, White Horses (got the theme tune on a single!), Belle and Sebastian, The Flashing Blade, Tarot, and The Double Deckers - now love Peter Firth as Harry in Spooks.

Play Days
Mortimer and Arabel
The Raggy Dolls
Huxley Pig

I was terrified of The Riddlers. And there was a programme about making things and it had a weird old man robot thing in a box and it was horrifying. I think it might have been called Bitsa.

kaleidoscopeantebellum · 24/05/2020 10:36

Raggy dolls, gummy bears and around the twist!

kaleidoscopeantebellum · 24/05/2020 10:36

Round*

Come Outside! Classic! Especially the Poo Episode!

@Greyhair59 Belle and Sebastian! Wow! That sounded familiar and after a google brought back so many memories of being yelled at to hurry up and get ready for school. They must of shown this and Spartacus one after each other in the late 80's

Chouradanilova · 24/05/2020 11:26

The Flaxton Boys, The Owl Service and Dominic.

Zaphodsotherhead · 24/05/2020 11:35

Oh yes, The Herbs (although I think that was more my brother's era). I loved them! Sage the owl, Dill the dog, Bayleaf the gardner, Lady Rosemary...

There was also a series based on the book 'Marianne Dreams' but I can't remember what the programme was, with the girl in the house where the rocks crept closer and closer every night? Scary but great.
Doctor Who (in its early incarnations)
Children of the Stones
Catweazle
Bill and Ben, who were largely boring, but every so often they'd go out of the garden into the woods behind the shed and I loved those episodes
And when my kids were young I really loved watching Round the Twist and Aquila with them.

I think I may have a taste for The Weird...

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 24/05/2020 12:16

'Bagpuss' is top for me. Loved all the folk tales (global too no less) and music.
'Rainbow' was legendary.
'Chorton and the Wheelies' (drugs?)
'The Famous Five' (I know, I know).
'It's a knockout'. Keith Chegwin was funny when he couldn't stop laughing
'Grange Hill'. It's about the sausage.
'The Muppets'.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 24/05/2020 12:23

Just seen a PP has mentioned 'The Mysterious Cities of Gold'. I can't believe I've forgotten that one. It started off a lifelong ambition (as yet unfulfilled) to go on the Inca trail and visit Machu Picchu. I swear I'll do it one day.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 24/05/2020 13:00

@MarieIVanArkleStinks that was me. What an epic theme tune it had!!

UnderTheLemonTree · 24/05/2020 13:06

kaleidoscopeantebellum · 24/05/2020 14:43

Did anyone else have look in the TV guide to see what time their programmes were on and then flick back and forth between bbc1 and channel 3 lol.

vampirethriller · 24/05/2020 19:42

I loved the Riddlers and David the Gnome. Bananaman is on Amazon Prime.
I used to like Dizzy Heights Hotel too.
