My vagina stinks

timewarp6 · 11/05/2020 17:30

I can't live with it anymore, it smells horrible even 2 minutes after showering. I don't use soap down there and I don't have an STI. I have been treated for thrush and no change.

It's worse in the hot weather but I'm feeling self conscious all the time. I can smell it when I'm sitting down on the sofa. People say it's normal to have an odour but when does it become abnormal?

I can't even describe the smell - it isn't fishy but it's unpleasant Sad

You can buy a pessary to treat BV called balance Active. You can order it on amazon too.

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 11/05/2020 17:56

There's a test for BV you can buy in a chemist. Boots and Superdrug sell it if you want to order online. You could also buy the BV pipettes that treat BV from them.

I have a history of perpetual thrush since adolescence and keep it at bay with vaginal probiotic pessaries and wash daily with Femfresh soothing wash (with probiotics) but Vagisil wash is good too (more expensive).

Is the smell in the folds of your skin between your legs and labia? If so, Caneston cream will clear it. You can get fungal build ups in damp places if you don't clean and dry properly every day. Obese people can get this in folds of skin on other parts of body (white smelly paste that smells cheesy).

mumofone2818 · 11/05/2020 17:58

in my past experience, i need to use a feminine wash for down there as anything else irritates me and using nothing doesn't work, always feels dirty!

try it and see if it works for you x

TinklyLittleLaugh · 11/05/2020 18:01

Sleep just leave your fanjo alone; your folds are meant to be moist and naturally lubricated.

Can't believe I just typed that.

biglouis · 11/05/2020 18:03

If you dont have a bidet (wonderful for cleaning your personal bits) you can get a portable one on Amazon.

McSnuff · 11/05/2020 18:07

It may not be BV, it may 'just' be vaginal atrophy. Locally applied HRT can work wonders and quickly too.

I'd recommend you see/phone a doctor with whom you can have a frank conversation about the nature of the smell. (I'm sorry!)

Either way its not unfixable, please take heart!

AvoidingRealHumans · 11/05/2020 18:08

I had BV about 4 weeks ago, definite awful smell - sometimes fishy but sometimes just a vile bin type smell.

I called my Drs and she sent a prescription straight to the pharmacy.
You can buy pessaries or gel treatments in most supermarkets, I've used these before and they do work but sometimes not enough and you still need antibiotics.
Call your GP and see what they think based on your symptoms.
Mine prescribed me the antibiotics and said to call back if nothing changed within a week so she can have a rethink or get me in.
Luckily it worked.

Rebelwithallthecause · 11/05/2020 18:09

I’d say BV too

There is a product I like called Balance Activ which works fast and isn’t antibiotics

sunglasses123 · 11/05/2020 18:11

Me too. I took the BC test at over £12 and it came back clear but as others said even straight after a shower there is a smell.

Its a bit itchy and stings a little. Any advice?

Chicchicchicchiclana · 11/05/2020 18:12

Yabu.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 11/05/2020 18:12

Are you telling me people use soap to wash their fanjos?

I only ever use water. You don’t want to upset the flora as it can lead to all sorts of issues and even UTIs

Friendsofmine · 11/05/2020 18:13

What do you mean no other symptoms? The smell is all many people get OP. Boots sell a self test order it online

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 11/05/2020 18:13

No chance. Those vaginal probiotics have given me my life back. When I say perpetual thrush, I really mean perpetual. I wish I had discovered them years ago. I haven't had thrush for years now and at the first twinge, I reach for the probiotics, job done.

I've never had BV but it has a fishy odour. So, if the OP's smell is more yeasty (or cheesy) and worse in hot weather then it's likely a yeast infection in the folds of skin outside the vagina (in the groin between legs and vulva). You do need to wash this part, I'm not talking about mucosal internal skin.

EmbarrassingMama · 11/05/2020 18:14

Please don't ever use Femfresh.

megrichardson · 11/05/2020 18:16

I don't know how old you are OP but could it be the start of the menopause, it changes all your chemistry and makes all sorts of weird things happen to your body.

Rebelwithallthecause · 11/05/2020 18:16

Please don't ever use Femfresh
This x1000

midnightstar66 · 11/05/2020 18:16

Almost certainly bv, you can buy either oral or gel anti biotics on the Internet and you can also get tests. There's also balance activ which will work in the short term but unlikely to actually get rid of it permanently

PersephoneandHades · 11/05/2020 18:19

@timewarp6 Are you sure you’re not being paranoid about it? I spent the whole of my teenage years believing that my vagina stank, but it didn’t, it just had a smell. Some women smell more than others, and it is normal to be able to smell your vagina while sitting down (though it shouldn’t smell foul).

Also is it definitely your vagina? I find that my underwear can smell pretty bad after a day where I’ve been sweating a lot and the part that smells is my vulva. After a day of sweating, discharge and a tad of urine it is not going to smell like roses.

If it is definitely coming from your vagina then I agree with the above that it is likely BV but you should go to the doctor to check as there is a myriad of reasons why a vagina could be smelling bad.

Good luck

stripycreature · 11/05/2020 18:25

I had bv twice (diagnosed by swab test) and the smell was horrific but not fishy at all. I still couldn't describe what the smell was like but it made me feel ill.

I will say that if it's bv and doesn't clear after a doctor prescribes a course of antibiotics, you may just need a longer course. That happened to me then it cleared up.

I did have terrible discharge also with bv.

helloPig · 11/05/2020 18:26

i’m genuinely astonished that people don’t wash their genitalia with anything but water. i know where my vagina is, and i’m not putting soap up there, but i definitely wash my genital area with body wash.

it seems a bit grim to soap your underarms but then just run the shower over your genitals.

CrocodilesCry · 11/05/2020 18:29

it is normal to be able to smell your vagina while sitting down

It's really, really not normal - sorry.

OP, sounds like it could be BV, the stuff really does work. It's a really unpleasant smell.

rosiepony · 11/05/2020 18:29

You’re meant to smell your fanny when your sitting down??

No fucking way! That’s gross.

Don’t know if anyone else had mentioned boric acid suppositories but I bought some after months of BV and trying various other treatments. Game changer! Never had it since X
