I just don’t see how anyone can enjoy it. It tastes like...I don’t know what but it’s not like potato.

Disclaimer - I’m not a snob. I’m a rubbish cook. But this smash stuff - I don’t get it 🧐

Smash made up with butter, an egg yolk, salt & pepper. Add a tin of drained tuna, chopped spring onion and sweetcorn. Fry until golden brown on both sides. Lovely.

I don't like smash but Tesco instant mash is quite nice with some butter and salt and pepper . Only have it for emergencies but way better than smash!

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 20/04/2020 18:40

What you want is frozen mash or from the fridge section if your a crap cook, i can cook but buy it when feeling lazy and it’s really very good!

As for smash I hated it as a child and not dared to eat it as a adult

Chocolateandamaretto · 20/04/2020 18:44

I quite like smash with lots of butter and will defend using it until the end of days (my psychotic SIL had a go at me for using it instead of making proper mash so I still get riled up about it!) it’s a good store cupboard thing and my kids like it with fishfingers Grin

Chocolateandamaretto · 20/04/2020 18:45

Still love proper mash btw and don’t really think of them as the same thing.

BlueJava · 20/04/2020 18:47

Urgh! You brought back awful memories from the 70's when I was at home! It was awful! I would rather mow the grass and eat that!

Purplemist · 20/04/2020 19:44

Smash is ok but I prefer Idahoan mash. I remember the queue for school dinners circa 1966 when the kids at the front would send back the dreaded warning - IT'S YEOMAN !
That was vile.

ANoiseAnnoys · 20/04/2020 19:47

My FIL was absolutely horrified one year after going to MIL’s sisters house for Christmas dinner - and being served smash instead of proper potato.
He still mentions it every Christmas and shivers at the memory!

ColourMyDreams · 20/04/2020 20:18

@Purplemist I remember Yeoman. It was just as disgusting as smash.
I remember my grandmother making it one day with some sliced grilled spam and tinned garden pea's.
Bloody disgusting 😬

Don't blame him. Unpardonable.

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 20/04/2020 21:57

They peel it
They cut it into pieces
And then they smash it up!!!!
Gyaaaahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!

bombaychef · 21/04/2020 00:08

Kids love it & we use when camping, but add butter and cheese and stuff lol

Ontheboardwalk · 21/04/2020 00:12

Is smash still a thing? If yes I reckon it will be the next Coronavirus sell out on the back of this thread. I won’t be ordering it

LemsipLemsipLemsip · 21/04/2020 00:32

I love the stuff. Especially with vinegar and black pepper! Blush
Preferred Yeoman though. Smash was nicer in pellet like form.

Vinosaurus · 21/04/2020 00:47

Oh god - the memories, only had it a handful of times in my childhood (80s) but bloody hell it was vile. How did they manage to make what is essentially dried potato and seasoning taste so disgusting?

Allthecandles · 21/04/2020 00:54

I don’t mind Smash but make normal mash quite often and keep in fridge or freezer. I bought some of that Idaho potato garlic mash thinking I would love it and couldn’t finish it. So disappointing lol.
