To think Smash is vile?

I just don’t see how anyone can enjoy it. It tastes like...I don’t know what but it’s not like potato.

Disclaimer - I’m not a snob. I’m a rubbish cook. But this smash stuff - I don’t get it 🧐

I like it Blush in fact I love it lol!

CrossFreelancer · 20/04/2020 07:12

Smash is vile. But Costco do a delicious version that needs milk water and butter and it's absolutely delicious

Princesspickle777 · 20/04/2020 07:14

Smash is vile, the smell makes me gag. I’m another one who recommends Idahoan mash, we don’t use it often but it’s handy to have in and actually very tasty. Can’t beat real mash though.

recrudescence · 20/04/2020 07:18

Agreed, Smash is pretty rank. Frozen mashed potato, on the other hand, is brilliant and has similar time/labour saving qualities.

PigletJohn · 20/04/2020 07:40

Very occasionally, instant potato comes out OK.

With a fluffy, not gluey, consistency.

I think it might be from not making it so hot that the starch dissolves, and not overmixing

Milk, butter and pepper improve the taste.

The Idaho packs contain a lot of palm oil and other additives.

I am happy to eat smash in a corned beef hash with vaked beans. I think we had that regularly as a child and I always enjoyed it. I wouldn't use it for something like sausage and mash though.

I am now curious about this Idahoan mash! Is the regular one nice or dows it need to be the buttery/flavoured one? Currently struggling with life in general and little things like not needing to prep potatoes at dinner time would actually really help.

BarbaraofSeville · 20/04/2020 07:49

I don't like Idaho mash. DP likes it so I've tried it, but I'd rather stick to my Sainsbury's one. Personal preference though.

ArriettyJones · 20/04/2020 07:52

Shock Wink

Why not?

ArriettyJones · 20/04/2020 07:54

Cheesy, buttery and the regular one are all good.

I can’t get in with the garlic one myself but DH and DS like it.

BarbaraofSeville · 20/04/2020 08:07

I don't think the texture or taste is much like real mash and most of the flavours are quite artificial.

I just prefer the Sainsbury's one, which is far far cheaper too. You get 4 packets in a box for less than the cost of one Idaho packet.

ArriettyJones · 20/04/2020 08:11

Fair enough. It’s just the first person who has ever been negative about the Idahoan. I thought it had been specially engineered to be universally popular. Grin I’ll have to try the Sainsbury’s one now. I’m curious.

ActuallyItsEugene · 20/04/2020 08:14

Buttery Idahoan mash is incredible.

Iloveantiques · 20/04/2020 08:23

I grew up on instant mash and frozen lamb dale steaks. A few years ago I tried to recreate this meal of my fondest memories.

Best left in the 70s, sadly.

ChocolateQuiltedShitPig · 20/04/2020 08:25

We were talking about Smash yesterday. Horrible stuff and sloppy.

I actually prefer the frozen mash to real mash though which is what we were eating while discussing it.

Someone I went to school with fed her baby on Smash .
I was so shocked and begged my friend to tell her how much salt was in it (I didn’t know how to contact her to tell her myself )
Never did find out if she stopped .

PoppliosBubble · 20/04/2020 09:41

I’d forgotten about frozen mash. I used to order it constantly when I lived somewhere that I could get Ocado deliveries to. Now I have to physically go to the supermarket I completely forgot about it. It’s lush.

Notredamn · 20/04/2020 10:00

Mmmm, Smash. I like it made with too little water so it's a bit powdery, 'served' with ketchup.
We're all allowed one absolutely filthy, socially unacceptable food combo every now and then!

skybluee · 20/04/2020 12:50

I hate it! I think it's the texture rather than the flavour. Real mashed potato, made with an actual potato, is so nice - and cheap if you buy the potato from the right place - I don't think Smash saves much if any money, although of course the big advantage is how long it will keep.

Oysterbabe · 20/04/2020 14:30

0.3g in an adult portion from the looks of it. Is it 1g of salt a day that babies are allowed? It's not ideal but I'm sure the baby was fine.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 20/04/2020 14:40

I have had the Idaho stuff...that was surprisingly nice, I put it on top of a naked cottage pie I had in the freezer (left over mince!) with an ample amount of cheese on no one even noticed.

Otherwise I keep it handy for thickening casseroles/soups/sauces, it never goes lumpy like flour.

Fluffybutter · 20/04/2020 16:19

@Oysterbabe this was about 15 years ago , it was much higher than salt then and it was her choice of weaning food so we’re talking about 3 months old

Bunnyseggyhead · 20/04/2020 16:38

I love smash! Great for people who can’t physically manage to do mashed potatoes. It was one of the things we struggled to get when everything went corona crazy because everyone was buying it up where we are.

HandfulOfFlowers · 20/04/2020 16:50

You can still buy Smash?!

Partychaos · 20/04/2020 18:29

Smash is awful- the taste the texture even the smell.
Frozen mashed potato on the other hand is delightful. Ultimate comfort food is frozen mash loads of grated cheese stirred through black pepper and Nandos salt
