I just don’t see how anyone can enjoy it. It tastes like...I don’t know what but it’s not like potato.

Disclaimer - I’m not a snob. I’m a rubbish cook. But this smash stuff - I don’t get it 🧐

Child of the 70's here and I grew up on it too! Loved it as a kid but wouldn't eat it now.

Does anyone remember "Chicklets" They were the food of the gods to my Dsis and I and I can still taste them now.

Also "Rise & Shine" powdered orange juice, what happened to that? We could never afford the real stuff but loved the Rise and shine.

Happy days.

LEELULUMPKIN · 20/04/2020 00:46

Also meant to say that Smash can do no wrong in my eyes as the ads were fantastic!

Cabinfever10 · 20/04/2020 00:48

If you make it with some milk and butter added to the water it's just about edible

CSIblonde · 20/04/2020 00:54

If you add a lot of butter & a lot of philadelphia & them loads of pepper, it's really nice :but off the scale calorie wise.

DioneTheDiabolist · 20/04/2020 01:04

My mother made it once in the 70s. Just once.Shock We sometimes talk about it.Sad

nannieann · 20/04/2020 01:10

Eaten loads of this when camping - quicker than cooking real potato. Its only any good if you cover it with baked beans or gravy. Can't imagine why anyone would choose to eat it in normal life.

Paddingtonjuice · 20/04/2020 01:17

It is good if you add a bit of butter and a shit loads of mature cheese.

LynetteScavo · 20/04/2020 01:40

I dunno, we have some (no idea why!) and when I made it, it was surprisingly good.

I read, on a list of high fibre foods which a GP gave to a relative, that it's very high in fibre. Why it would be higher in fiver than normal mashed potato is a mystery to me.

MrsSnitchnose · 20/04/2020 01:51

The only time I ever use it is when I'm setting up a science experiment where the students are testing for fat, protein and sugars

Littlepond · 20/04/2020 02:27

I like it.

BumpyNugget · 20/04/2020 02:34

This may well be a TMI thing, so sorry up front.

I was unwell about six years ago and had zero energy for eating, let alone cooking.

Decided to give it a try.

Little nuggets of dried potato, looked a bit odd but made it up as instructed.

Ate it, not quite as bad as expected. Dinner had, A OK.

Next morning, pooped and felt a bit odd.
Turned round to flush and saw it had near enough turned back into it's original form.

Freaked me right out. Never again. I will eat bread and butter first.

mous · 20/04/2020 02:52

Loathe it. Imagine a cross between some old Pringles crumbs and dehydrated fallout ash. That's Smash

However there's a half used packet at back of cupboard I dare not throw away, just in case we all end up roaming the fields for sustenance, communicating only in a grungy devolved version of our once rich language, like they do in Threads

Even then not sure could bring myself to eat it, and the last thing I ate was a pear drop I found rolling around in my tool drawer.

I have no standards but Smash somehow manages to limbo below them.

It just tastes fucking grim. It's either like eating warm paste or it turns to dust in your mouth. There's probably a happy medium between the two, but I've never wanted to put the effort in to try and find it.

Smash can fuck off back to Button Moon

BarbaraofSeville · 20/04/2020 05:13

I haven't had it for years because I get sainsburys own brand instant mash, which is much nicer. If you make it up with slightly less water than it says, that's better too.

Peppafrig · 20/04/2020 05:21

I don't think Smash is vile I know it is. Awful stuff .

Spartak · 20/04/2020 05:22

I quite like it made with milk and butter, and some extra mature grated cheddar chucked in.

Monty27 · 20/04/2020 05:36

I want some now ☺️

QueenOfHell669 · 20/04/2020 06:10

Eh, it’s passable if baked (ie on the top of a shepherds pie in a rush) but no I wouldn’t eat it on its own either. You also have to add things, a bit of mustard for eg and mix it very well... but it works Smile

ArriettyJones · 20/04/2020 06:29

Idahoan packet mash is the best. Amazon and some of the supermarkets stock it. I can’t tell it from the real stuff.

I started using it when I couldn’t find Mr Mash easily any more. That is also very good.

Smash tastes of weird chemicals.

NiceViper · 20/04/2020 06:43

The French version is Mousseline

I can't tell the difference between that and Smash, but the French one is less embarrassing to have in your cupboards.

.

UnfinishedSymphon · 20/04/2020 06:44

I used to love Smash butties as a student, on thickly buttered cheap white bread, still have it occasionally when he works away and I CBA peeling spuds (arthritis).

FabulouslyElegantTits · 20/04/2020 06:49

@PoppliosBubble

You're not that much of a freak, I had a brief foray into 'Slimming World' 15 years ago ... they actively encouraged you to make pizza bases out of baked smash 🤮🤮 with a 'dreamy' cottage cheese topping!!!

Mrhodgeymaheg · 20/04/2020 06:51

You need to put at least an equal ratio of butter in the mix for it to be edible.

KatherineJaneway · 20/04/2020 06:56

oh yes, the ads with aliens all falling about laughing at the thought of real potatoes

When Skype calls go a bit wonky some attendees sound like these aliens Grin

Toddlerteaplease · 20/04/2020 06:58

But their alien adverts are the best adverts ever made!

Bakedpotatoandgin · 20/04/2020 07:08

I like Smash. It's nothing like real mashed potato, which is obviously better, but it's good with milk, butter, cheese and black pepper as an emergency dinner.
