Peter Kay’s Car Share degrading women?

ZeroOneOneTwoThree · 11/04/2020 19:06

If you haven’t already heard, Peter Kay and the BBC released a new episode of Peter Kay’s Car Share yesterday.

At about 6 minutes 53 into the episode, Peter Kay and his costar start discussing a three year old breastfeeding at soft-play.

The language used to describe something so natural was absolutely abhorrent.

Can I recommend that you listen to the piece here? www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p088wzsg/peter-kays-car-share-audio-special

If you are as appalled as I am, can I also ask that you make a complaint here? www.bbc.co.uk/contact/complaints/make-a-complaint

There are so many things wrong with this. AIBU to think that in this day this should not have been aired?

🙄

VeganVeal · 11/04/2020 21:18

@donquixotedelamancha I agree, so much stuff goes over peoples head, its unbelievable, they should have a listen to Jimmy Carr, some of his stuff makes me think thats a bit too far, but I still laugh. The Rolf Harris bit and ad's were the best bit, housewives love a bit of sausage

Get a bloody life

x2boys · 11/04/2020 21:22

Not seen it yet @Thymelord my son goes to your ex husbands old school !

MrsSiba · 11/04/2020 21:26

I'm listening but I'm not finding it funny. Why include Operation Yew Tree, Gary Glitter and long term bf. Strange subjects to pick. Not cheered me up much 🤔

cactus2020 · 11/04/2020 21:34

It's funny. And lots of people would agree with the sentiment. Including the fictional characters in the show. If they'd been joking about breastfeeding generally you might have had cause to be sensitive (although still have no right to complain about a fictional show with made-up characters) but really, you are completely delusional to raise a complaint about this.

heartsonacake · 11/04/2020 21:49

Breastfeeding a three year old is perfectly natural.

QuixoticQuokka Don’t be so silly of course it isn’t natural.

People can make whatever choices they want regarding feeding their kids but in no way is breastfeeding so late anywhere near natural.

ScarfLadysBag · 11/04/2020 21:52

I mean, Peter Kay is about as funny as a lobotomy anyway so YANBU on that front.

EveryLifeHasASoundtrack · 11/04/2020 21:52

Just listened, made me laugh. I think Peter Kaye is a good bloke.

I’m sure you won’t be the only person complaining, people like to complain especially when they’re bored.

ScarfLadysBag · 11/04/2020 21:55

@heartsonacake Well it is actually natural. Whether you think it's socially normal is another thing, but it's very much natural.

Thymelord · 11/04/2020 21:58

x2boys Everybody from Bolton, born around the mid 70s, claims to have gone to school with Peter Kay, I made my exh prove it with photos 🤣🤣

Luc1nda · 11/04/2020 22:01

lovely to see Peter Kaye back “in public“. Is this the first time since he made the decision to step back?

x2boys · 11/04/2020 22:01

I assume he went to the Catholic secondary near the hospita?l Paddy Mcguiness also went there the school have photos of them everywh see Jason Jenny also attended the same school

JayAlfredPrufrock · 11/04/2020 22:02

Yes it is I believe.

x2boys · 11/04/2020 22:02

Kenny !

QuixoticQuokka · 11/04/2020 22:05

heartsonacake The WHO recommends breastfeeding for up to two years or beyond, it's biologically normal.

AllTheseThingsThatIHaveNotDone · 11/04/2020 22:08

Well, I've breastfed three DC to 3 years old and I wasn't offended by it particularly, just thought it was ignorant - not as bad as Little Britain bitty sketches but not funny either - it was lazy writing to set up two 'punchlines' about timberlands and 4G. It is an anomaly to bf that late though - the comments I received were far worse than this show (called a sow by a random bloke, shouted at for bf in a restaurant in Majorca and told I should be in the toilet, told I was bf for me and it was weird). You shake it off - I like Sian Gibson so shame she went with that script but I'm not going to work myself up about it.

Thymelord · 11/04/2020 22:08

Yup, that school. Also the primary school on the main road that was extended in the late 80s/early 90s.

I have many a friend (not me!) who became well acquainted with Paddy M when he drank in the 3 pigeons on hunger hill.

Thymelord · 11/04/2020 22:10

He also used to teach karate over a pizza shop in horwich 🤣 I "knew" him then 🤣

shineaflight · 11/04/2020 22:12

Cheers OP. Didn't know about it. Gave us a welcome giggle

AllTheseThingsThatIHaveNotDone · 11/04/2020 22:12

When I say anomaly btw I mean that I was definitely an outlier - didn't know many others who did extended bf and it certainly wasn't the cultural norm where I was - to the degree sad judgy arses were disgusted. Fortunately supportive DH and not having any fucks to give meant I wasn't influenced/shamed but had I been younger, it might have made me feel shitty.

QuixoticQuokka · 11/04/2020 22:15

I wasn't actually offended either, just didn't find it funny and I think it's a shame that such ignorance is still being perpetuated.

x2boys · 11/04/2020 22:15

Yes know the primary school Thyme ,well tbh the three pigeons has a bit of a reputation even without Paddy frequenting it😂

Eminybob · 11/04/2020 22:18

You know, I was prepared to say yabu as I generally can’t get worked up about this sort of thing, and I certainly wouldn’t rush to complain but...
The “joke” is a bit unnecessary isn’t it? It shames extended breastfeeding and it isn’t funny. Breastfeeding needs to be normalised and celebrated, not ridiculed.

AllTheseThingsThatIHaveNotDone · 11/04/2020 22:19

I have listened to half so far and not really laughed but I have a soft spot for the show - can forgive them anything for the monkey episode which had me in hysterics as it just reminded me of Knowsley.
