To think cycling should be banned under lockdown?

I just had to drive to an essential medical appointment, and come across dozens of cyclists.

Why is cycling still allowed when driving is only allowed for essential travel? Surely the 1 hour exercise should be restricted to walking? If the cyclist falls off or is hit by a car, that puts pressure on emergency services.

And yes I know a very small minority will be cycling to an essential job... but I doubt all the people I saw were doing so. Surely the rules should be the same... essential travel only.

A car cause a thousand times worse damage than a bike! And cyclists have zero protection unlike in a car. The anti cyclist rhetoric is truly mad. We need more cyclists and fewer cars - no brainer. Love cycling so quick and pure. Feel so much happier getting on my bike than in a car. Plus no parking issues.

*Most people who hate cyclists have never cycled.

Most people who hate cyclists are pretty unlikeable themselves. As long as we're generalising.*

These ^^ 100%

Thank god for sensible mumsnetters!

No, a car could...

A cyclist could knock a pedestrian over and kill them.

Stay in the road on your bike and there's no problem.

hesgotit · 10/04/2020 20:20

Cars slow down, stop speeding, stop polluting, ststop killing pedestrians and cyclists ..... no problem!

hesgotit · 10/04/2020 20:20

*stop killing

MsTSwift · 10/04/2020 20:23

You are insane. Cars kill way more pedestrians than bikes! That’s before the fumes ...

BeetrootRocks · 10/04/2020 20:24

Wow are you really pursuing this?

The statement you wanted stats on was

'If you look at statistics, it's in almost all cases the car the hurts the cyclist, not the other way round'.

Are you sure you want to keep maintaining that you won't accept that without statisical backup?

As I say, Google is your friend.

hesgotit · 10/04/2020 20:25

@MsTSwift it's like @Hearhoovesthinkzebras doesn't understand why so many speed camera's alone have been introduced, because drivers are arseholes who unless they're going to get a fine won't stop driving fast and killing 1000s of people a day!

Unreal!

BeetrootRocks · 10/04/2020 20:28

Just googling a little anyway as bored and found this:

'Air pollution causes at least 40,000 early deaths in the UK from lung and heart disease, but it is being linked to an increasing range of health impacts, from miscarriage to teenage psychosis.'

www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/environment/2019/apr/01/air-pollution-falling-london-millions-still-exposed

Would be interested to know the stats for these problems caused by bicycles.

I suspect they are the same or worse and will hold that line until I look silly, then will move the goalposts Grin

MsTSwift · 10/04/2020 20:29

Deranged. Further engagement pointless. Enjoy your evening fellow cyclists 🚵‍♀️

hesgotit · 10/04/2020 20:31

PotholeParadise · 10/04/2020 20:53

Stay in the road on your bike and there's no problem.
And there we have an advantage for cyclists over drivers.

If drivers stay in the road, there is still a problem, because car fumes don't stay in the road. This is not a hypothetical situation. I have seen my son have a pollution-triggered asthma attack on the pavement.

VeryShortNotice · 10/04/2020 21:06

I suspect they are the same or worse and will hold that line until I look silly, then will move the goalposts

This is the basic principle of online debate as far as I can tell.

ivykaty44 · 10/04/2020 21:30

And I hate selfish drivers

. Funny how we never have these ludicrous posts about them, isn't it!

There are plenty of posts about arsehole school gate crashers & parking pricks both are selfish ignorant drivers

ErrolTheDragon · 10/04/2020 23:30

Would be interested to know the stats for these problems caused by bicycles.

I've had someone try to tell me that cyclists cause air pollution because they hold up cars and make them go slower than their optimum speed and hence produce more emissions. Okaaay...

PotholeParadise · 11/04/2020 00:44

ErrolTheDragon

But it's recommended that people reduce their speed in order to reduce emissions!

BeetrootRocks · 11/04/2020 00:45

Traffic jams are caused by cars not bicycles!

ErrolTheDragon · 11/04/2020 07:30

Maybe it was the acceleration needed to overtake ... its hard to remember the details of an argument which makes no sense to you.
This was someone who is normally sensible and not a knob, cyclist allergy seems to be a thing. Weird.

ivykaty44 · 11/04/2020 07:38

Maybe it was the acceleration needed to overtake

The only people overtaking a car jam are other traffic, cyclists farting probably isn’t going to add a lot of pollution

Regularly pass 50 drivers in cars, all sat on their own with 4 empty seats, I watch as the cyclists psss them all & even I go faster on foot

Strangely drivers don’t get annoyed at other drivers holding them up, but also they talk as if the traffic they are within is somehow different from themselves - they don’t realise they are traffic

Other countries seem to want to help their emergency staff/essential workers,
Here we just clap 👏 which in the scheme of things does fuck all

bluebluezoo · 11/04/2020 10:15

DH cycles to work. He stops at red lights and never uses pavements

Interestingly now the roads are very quiet on my daily commute I have noticed several sets of lights that are triggered to turn from red to green by approaching cars.

It means as a cyclist I don’t trigger them- so I either wait for a car to come past and trigger the change, go through the red light, or hop on to the pavement and use the pedestrian crossing...

Bearing in mind at 5:30am it can be 20 mins or more before a car passes....

ivykaty44 · 11/04/2020 10:21

Ride down the Center of the lane and weave just a little bit from side to side. Our local set is triggered, not by weight but movement and as a car is far wider it works if I wiggle

cologne4711 · 11/04/2020 11:09

Air pollution causes at least 40,000 early deaths in the UK from lung and heart disease, but it is being linked to an increasing range of health impacts, from miscarriage to teenage psychosis

I also think that it's a key factor in dementia, too.

BeetrootRocks · 11/04/2020 14:25

Oh wow
That thing about setting the lights to be triggered by cars and forgetting about bikes!
That's an excellent example of bias in design.
