To think cycling should be banned under lockdown?

I just had to drive to an essential medical appointment, and come across dozens of cyclists.

Why is cycling still allowed when driving is only allowed for essential travel? Surely the 1 hour exercise should be restricted to walking? If the cyclist falls off or is hit by a car, that puts pressure on emergency services.

And yes I know a very small minority will be cycling to an essential job... but I doubt all the people I saw were doing so. Surely the rules should be the same... essential travel only.

@SimonJT don't talk rubbish. Brisk walking, hill walking etc are excellent forms of exercise.

RhymingRabbit3 · 06/04/2020 18:34

What is the coronavirus risk from solo cycling?

What is the coronavirus risk from going form a solo drive? There isn't one, but it's not allowed, because if you're in an accident it puts responders at risk and could put you in hospital. Surely the same is true of cyclists on the road?

ErrolTheDragon · 06/04/2020 18:35

it is far easier to social distance when you are on the road.

I certainly wouldn't ban cycling but a lot of the cyclists using the road through our village (which is a national cycle route) don't ride far enough away from the very narrow pavement when passing pedestrians.

AndromedaPerseus · 06/04/2020 18:36

YABU and I say this as both a cyclist and car driver

Divebar · 06/04/2020 18:36

Thing about cycling is that it can be a form of transport AND a form of fitness. Lots of people commute by bike in my neck of the woods which seems safer than alternative public transport options. However I do agree about groups shouldn’t be out together if that’s what you’ve seen. I also don’t think people should be riding for hours... that tends to go against the general message of “ stay the fuck at home”. The idea is to stretch your legs and get some fresh air not maintain optimum cardiovascular fitness.

GogoGobo · 06/04/2020 18:36

YABU OP. Bore off.

userxx · 06/04/2020 18:37

Probably don’t hit them with your car then?

Where's the fun in that 😏

Kateplaysrugbyinmydreams · 06/04/2020 18:37

Well you're a joyless delight aren't you op?

I use my bike to get to my nhs job. Is that ok with you or shall I lengthen my working day by walking so you're not offended whilst driving?

GulliBelle · 06/04/2020 18:38

Simon, break a habit of a life time, and stop saying silly things. Everybody knows you are only doing it to show off.

Reversiblesequinsforadults · 06/04/2020 18:38

YABVU. Cycling is not only an excellent exercise option, it is also an efficient and non-polluting transport option, with the added extra advantage of appropriate social distancing that isn't possible on a bus. I hate the irrational prejudice towards people on a bike.

Waveysnail · 06/04/2020 18:38

I took kids cycling today for the first time and felt safer than walking as there was more distance from people.on the pavement

tinytemper66 · 06/04/2020 18:38

My husband cycles back and for to work so you are being unreasonable.

LockdownLucy · 06/04/2020 18:39

Cycling on your own or in family group you're less likely to be in close proximity for any length of time with others. Built up cities just have a sheer weight of people trying to do it at the same time. I thought that perhaps separating outdoors times to different lettered surnames or something might relieve that pressure. Spread it out. Better than dawdling on a park pavement.

Eckhart · 06/04/2020 18:39

If the cyclist falls off or is hit by a car, that puts pressure on emergency services

Cars, on the other hand, create no more risk than walking..?

amicissimma · 06/04/2020 18:40

If I cycle to the shops I can bring back 8 days worth of shopping: backpack, panniers and carrier. If I walk I can only carry half of that so I would have to do a shop every 4 days instead.

MigginsMrs · 06/04/2020 18:41

Big groups is not on but we have been cycling with the kids as we frequently do

PickAChew · 06/04/2020 18:41

If walking were the only exercise allowed we’d all end up obese.

Bollocks.

BeetrootRocks · 06/04/2020 18:41

YABU

It's a great form a transport and exercise

The amount of people killed or seriously injured by cars Vs by bikes every year... A horrifying number Vs hardly any

No pollution

A lot of people really hate cyclists though it's weird.

AlbusSeverusPotter13 · 06/04/2020 18:42

Urgh, so bored of people parroting the “one hour limit” on exercising. THIS ISN'T TRUE. There is no limit upon exercise. And no, I don’t think cycling should be banned. For people who have a certain level of fitness, they would struggle to exercise properly if only allowed to walk and they were unable to jog/run.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 06/04/2020 18:42

yabu and entitled Biscuit

fascinated · 06/04/2020 18:42

Well I can’t walk with my toddler and I can’t lift him so cycling with him in the trailer on the back is all I can do. I’ll pay the fines.

Tootletum · 06/04/2020 18:43

Oh FFS

ErrolTheDragon · 06/04/2020 18:43

I reckon what the OP really wants to ban is MAMILs.Grin

Dylaninthemovies1 · 06/04/2020 18:43

Ffs. Mind your own.

I’m not a cyclist, but it’s a great way to exercise and used as a method of transport for many. A good many of my colleagues commute by bike. My friend is a nurse, and that’s how he gets to work

h3av3n · 06/04/2020 18:44

Cycling to work or the shop is a common thing... Also exercise is allowed and for good reason.
