To think cycling should be banned under lockdown?

I just had to drive to an essential medical appointment, and come across dozens of cyclists.

Why is cycling still allowed when driving is only allowed for essential travel? Surely the 1 hour exercise should be restricted to walking? If the cyclist falls off or is hit by a car, that puts pressure on emergency services.

And yes I know a very small minority will be cycling to an essential job... but I doubt all the people I saw were doing so. Surely the rules should be the same... essential travel only.

Where did I say people that don’t cycle are fat?! I said people that do cycle a lot aren’t ie me and dh. Unlike you I am happy for others to do sports they enjoy even if not my thing. You sound extremely bitter.

PotholeParadise · 10/04/2020 14:45

inconvenience caused to anyone else, all done safely indoors.

Funnily enough, that's why I don't think cycling should be any more discouraged than it presently is, because cycling doesn't cause the inconvenience to others of death through air pollution.

Some 385,000 people worldwide died prematurely in 2015 from air pollution caused by vehicle exhaust emissions, a US study found Wednesday, which singled out diesel engines as the main culprit.

phys.org/news/2019-02-pollution-deaths-linked-diesel.html

As well as being a leading source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the transport sector is responsible for a large proportion of urban air pollution. An estimated 4.2 million premature deaths are attributed to ambient (outdoor) air pollution, based on WHO data from 2012. Overall, higher urban air pollution concentrations increase the risk for cardiovascular and respiratory disease, cancer and adverse birth outcomes, and also are associated with higher death rates.

Yabu people cycle to shops too

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 10/04/2020 14:53

Plus you will have a smaller arse. I’ve dropped 2 dress sizes since taking up cycling

It’s not a toned arse though is it. Eat less and cycle - lost 2 stone since autumn😁

Your comments @MsTSwift.

If you weren't meaning that people who don't cycle don't have toned arses then what did you mean? Seems pretty clear to me.

Exoffice

Car registration doesn't mean that all drivers are traceable, no. But it does mean the majority are and some more are picked up using police ANPR if reg plates don't match car for example. At least there's a good chance of identifying the driver. As it stands with cyclists there is no chance at all.

Exoffice · 10/04/2020 15:32

by your logic, hear, anyone who could scratch a car would need a numberplate, i.e. pedestrians, prams etc too.

You are deluded. I recommend a bike ride - good for the arse and the mind Smile

hesgotit · 10/04/2020 15:43

@Hearhoovesthinkzebras do you think you'd be better off lobbying the government for cyclists to have insurance etc? Instead of coming on here and trying to tell cyclists and people who aren't anti cycling that they should all be off the road? Mind you Sadiq Kahn might be at a loss as to what to do with the super Highway!

Also what about skate boards and scooters should they have plates and be insured as well?

You're coming across as suffering from cycle-phobia, do you?

MsTSwift · 10/04/2020 15:51

Of all the awful things going on in the world getting ones knickers in a twist about cycling is ahem eccentric to say the least. Sounds like you need a cause. Find a worthwhile one and concentrate on that

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 10/04/2020 15:58

I recommend a bike ride - good for the arse and the mind smile

Ever stopped to think that some people might not be able to ride a bike before making sarcastic comments?

Macncheeseballs · 10/04/2020 16:55

I guess that would be aimed at people who can ride a bike

ivykaty44 · 10/04/2020 17:13

as stated before many people use there bike as a mobility aid, there are a few places that will help you get kitted out to ride. alternatively there is a freedom program called wind in your hair which you dont need to do anything but enjoy the ride.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 10/04/2020 17:29

So prey do tell, how do people with mobility problems ride a bike? I can't bend one knee - how do I pedal? Do link to bikes that you can pedal with only one leg and also saddles that you can sit on with a battery sewn in to your buttock.

MsTSwift · 10/04/2020 17:39

But why do you hate bikes so much?!?! It’s weird!

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 10/04/2020 17:40

I don't hate bikes, why would I?

I hate selfish cyclists, of which there are many ime

mencken · 10/04/2020 17:47

and many fat pricks in cars too, and on foot, and breeding too many kids, and letting pointless dogs bark and shit everywhere.

it's not a perfect world, but sillybitch generalisations make it even less so.

hesgotit · 10/04/2020 17:50

Your dislike of cyclist is very apparent @Hearhoovesthinkzebras ! You remind me of this guy.

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.smh.com.au/national/nsw/ben-smith-jailed-for-eight-years-jail-over-death-of-cyclist-steven-jarvie-20170703-gx3bhd.html

hesgotit · 10/04/2020 17:51

And I hate selfish drivers @Hearhoovesthinkzebras of which there are many more ime. Funny how we never have these ludicrous posts about them, isn't it!

ChristmasCarcass · 10/04/2020 18:05

I have always thought that cyclists are generally selfish people, but maybe I'm wrong

Oh no that’s perfectly true, they administer a personality test at the door of Evans Cycles, and if it says you’re too nice they send you away with a flea in your ear.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 10/04/2020 18:08

I hate selfish car drivers too but they aren't causing problems for pedestrians on pavements are they?

Greenpop21 · 10/04/2020 18:10

Most cyclists are also motorists and pedestrians.

LaurieMarlow · 10/04/2020 18:11

they aren't causing problems for pedestrians on pavements are they?

They’re much more problematic in terms of actually killing pedestrians.

PotholeParadise · 10/04/2020 18:17

What about

  1. when selfish drivers park on pavements,
  2. when selfish drivers mount pavements in theirs cars (www.yorkmix.com/cars-mount-pavement-in-road-rage-chase-through-york-city-centre/), and
  3. when selfish drivers on unnecessary car journeys contribute to the air pollution that causes my son to have an asthma attack walking on the pavement to school?
Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 10/04/2020 18:18

Well, at the moment it isn't car drivers causing problems for pedestrians on pavements or in parks is it?

fascinated · 10/04/2020 18:27

This thread is getting ridiculous.

ChristmasCarcass · 10/04/2020 18:28

I know you don’t actually want to learn to ride a bike, because you detest cyclists. And have obviously never watched the Paralympics. But problems bending your knee are absolutely not a barrier to cycling:

www.freedomconcepts.com/product-lines/adaptive-bikes/

LaurieMarlow · 10/04/2020 18:29

Oh fgs hear the barrel scraping is extraordinary.

Why don’t you have a think about what exactly it is you have against cyclists. Might be enlightening.
