To think cycling should be banned under lockdown?

I just had to drive to an essential medical appointment, and come across dozens of cyclists.

Why is cycling still allowed when driving is only allowed for essential travel? Surely the 1 hour exercise should be restricted to walking? If the cyclist falls off or is hit by a car, that puts pressure on emergency services.

And yes I know a very small minority will be cycling to an essential job... but I doubt all the people I saw were doing so. Surely the rules should be the same... essential travel only.

On the basis of these results, the scientists advise that those on the move should be given more of a social distance. Walkers should get at least four metres, runners 10 metres and cyclists at least 20 metres.'

Surely that's arse about face - if those distances are correct it's the people moving more quickly who need to be giving more distance to others. Cycle or run well clear of pedestrians, don't expect them to hurl themselves into a hedge to avoid you.

hesgotit · 10/04/2020 03:07

I have always thought that cyclists are generally selfish people, but maybe I'm wrong.

Oh yeah it's a really well known thing that selfish people take up cycling! What a ridiculous generalisation.

TimeForDinnerDinnerDinner · 10/04/2020 03:23

Of course YABU.
As long all guidelines are followed for social distancing, and they're cycling observing the usual rules, etc, nothing wrong with it at all.

I’ve always found them very thoughtful, they always without fail leave me a parking space when I’m driving

You are wrong. They are saving the NHS and the tax payer a fortune.

Scott72 · 10/04/2020 07:15

I'm expecting a new topic "AIBU to think people should be bricked into their houses and fed through a small hole in the wall during lockdown?"

MinnieMountain · 10/04/2020 07:22

That's funny, I always thought drivers are generally selfish people (I don't think they all are but since we're making sweeping generalisations...)

What, because they don't bow down to the king of the road - the SUV?

Cyclists cause very few accidents and when they do they are usually very minor. Drivers cause thousands of accidents every year and many of them end in deaths.

Hmm, I wonder which are the more selfish ones? The drivers of polluting SUVs are top of my list (possibly eclipsed by those who have bonfires at the moment).

Macncheeseballs · 10/04/2020 08:32

I've always thought that people who drive cars for short trips are generally selfish people

Loopyloopy · 10/04/2020 08:39

I think it's great that people are cycling more. The risk of injury is far lower than people think - mortality per km travelled on a bike is similar to travelling in a car. Bikes should be encouraged as an active form of transport, and I hope more people ride bikes to work once this is over.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 10/04/2020 09:49

Have you seen cyclists in London? Traffic lights, pedestrian crossings and pedestrians are invisible to a good number of cyclists, particularly the couriers

fascinated · 10/04/2020 09:50

Newsflash! We don’t all live in London!

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 10/04/2020 10:15

Newsflash - the views of those of us who do will be based on what we see around us ie cyclists acting like dicks and not respecting traffic lights or pedestrians crossing in accordance with them.

cologne4711 · 10/04/2020 10:20

Yes I have. I've also seen drivers breaking all the rules too, especially the bus drivers, whose favourite activity is stopping over pedestrian crossings. And the pedestrians who spend the whole time glued to their phones. Everyone is annoying, cyclists are not a special breed.

Anyway, can you all read this please: www.vice.com/en_us/article/v74az9/the-viral-study-about-runners-spreading-coronavirus-is-not-actually-a-study

A two ton car is going to physical do far more damage than a 20kg bike, so thank goodness these rogue people are cycling and not driving

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 10/04/2020 11:00

cologne4711

That may all be true but it means that cyclists are not the saints some on here would have us believe. Particularly in London many are a danger to pedestrians , ploughing through red traffic lights without a care as to who may be crossing the road.

Getting knocked down by a cyclist barrelling along could cause serious injury. If they were walking, not cycling, it would be even better

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 10/04/2020 11:04

Meanwhile, cyclists should at least have to display registration plates and have insurance. At least then if one does cause injury or damage the victim could claim against them.

BeetrootRocks · 10/04/2020 11:50

It anyways amazes me how people hate cyclists but turn a blind eye to the massive loss of life, and permanent injury, caused by cars every year.

If everyone was on bikes there would be hardly any injury, death, pollution on the roads. But no get them all of their bikes they're a terrible hazard Hmm

Macncheeseballs · 10/04/2020 11:52

Cars cause more accidents than any other vehicle anywhere

BeetrootRocks · 10/04/2020 11:53

People would get off bikes and into cars, not walk. You can't walk to work as fast as you can cycle, or do deliveries.

Have people thought this through.

People are so wed to their beloved cars it makes them blind tbh

Macncheeseballs · 10/04/2020 11:59

Everytime I see a cyclist I think how selfish they are for travelling around with out polluting the planet and helping to ease traffic congestion and looking after their health so they are less of a burden on the nhs. Ooh makes me mad Angry

BeetrootRocks · 10/04/2020 12:04

I think the real issue a lot of people have with cyclists is that they're worried about hitting them with their cars. And this worry manifests itself by thinking of lots of reasons to get them off the roads.

When in fact if more people cycled and less people drove, life would be nicer and safer for everyone in multiple ways.

Macncheeseballs · 10/04/2020 12:17

Car free cities are the future. People might as well get used to it

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 10/04/2020 12:58

Why shouldn't bikes have to display a registration plate and cyclists be insured? If a cyclist runs me down or damages my car why shouldn't I be able to claim?
