To think cycling should be banned under lockdown?

I just had to drive to an essential medical appointment, and come across dozens of cyclists.

Why is cycling still allowed when driving is only allowed for essential travel? Surely the 1 hour exercise should be restricted to walking? If the cyclist falls off or is hit by a car, that puts pressure on emergency services.

And yes I know a very small minority will be cycling to an essential job... but I doubt all the people I saw were doing so. Surely the rules should be the same... essential travel only.

I would not mind having a reg plate and insurance. Bring it on. That’s fair enough.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 10/04/2020 13:01

Excellent. Are you campaigning for that?

PotholeParadise · 10/04/2020 13:36

fascinated you can sort insurance right now.
www.cycleplan.co.uk/public-liability-insurance?ref=CPPPCG19&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI5b71sO7d6AIV1IBQBh3l1QkMEAAYASAAEgLTCPD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Lots of cyclists do. As I posted on another thread this week, the public liability component of my insurance maxes out at £1,000,000 and I pay about a tenner a year for it. How much public liability cover do you get for a tenner when you insure a car?

Exoffice · 10/04/2020 13:41

Why shouldn't bikes have to display a registration plate and cyclists be insured? If a cyclist runs me down or damages my car why shouldn't I be able to claim?

you can bring a claim against a cyclist in any case though.

And lol for cyclists damaging your car. If you look at statistics, it's in almost all cases the car the hurts the cyclist, not the other way round.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 10/04/2020 13:43

you can bring a claim against a cyclist in any case though.

You can if
a) you can identify them
B) they can afford to pay you for the damage.

A cyclist flies past you at the traffic lights and takes your sing mirror off, how do you claim? How do you know their identity in order to claim?

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 10/04/2020 13:44

If you look at statistics, it's in almost all cases the car the hurts the cyclist, not the other way round.

Do they maintain statistics for damage caused by cyclists then?

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 10/04/2020 13:46

I know them fuckers, cycling so they don’t have a massive arse at the end of lockdown

BeetrootRocks · 10/04/2020 13:47

Lol at the poster who was wants statistical proof that cars cause more death and serious injury on the road than bikes Grin

Macncheeseballs · 10/04/2020 13:48

Cyclists knocking off wing mirrors happens all the time around these parts Hmm

Vanhi · 10/04/2020 13:55

A couple of points that may or may not have been mentioned in the previous 20 pages:

Bicycles and tricycles are often mobility aids, allowing those who struggle to walk even short distances to get out.

The effects of COVID 19 are worse in areas where air pollution is bad. You can make more of a case for banning cars, which exacerbate the symptoms, than for banning bicycles.

And things which will have been mentioned but are worth reiterating:

Collisions involving cars will be worse than those involving bikes. Don't whatabout me. That is basic physics because of the forces involved. So again, if you're concerned about collisions there is a better case for banning cars.

If I use my bike I can cycle to work and pick up food shopping on the way back, thus combining shopping, travel to essential work and my exercise for the day.

Also, do fuck off with this nonsense.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 10/04/2020 13:56

BeetrootRocks

I'd like statistical evidence for the damage and injuries that cyclists cause, yes. What's wrong with that? Are you saying that cyclists should be allowed to cause damage or injury with impunity?

MsTSwift · 10/04/2020 13:57

Plus you will have a smaller arse. I’ve dropped 2 dress sizes since taking up cycling

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 10/04/2020 13:58

Bicycles and tricycles are often mobility aids, allowing those who struggle to walk even short distances to get out.

And cars help people who can't walk or ride a bike. Without a car I can't get out.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 10/04/2020 13:59

MsTSwift

Maybe eat more healthily. That also gives you a smaller arse.

Pedallleur · 10/04/2020 14:00

There is no legal requirement for cyclists to be registered/insured but you could lobby your MP to campaign for it. Given that the DVLA doesn't know how many illegal cars are on the road how are bicycles going to be registered and policed? Who would pay for it? It's illegal to use a phone in your car when moving and that isn't policed v.well.

Hingeandbracket · 10/04/2020 14:01

Why shouldn't bikes have to display a registration plate and cyclists be insured? Because it's the most twattily impractical idea in the universe.
There are thousands of cars being driven every day without the proper plates and without insurance. If we can't enforce that (and we can't) how the fuck does anyone think we could enforce plates for bikes? It just isn't possible unless we were, say North Korea, and then we wouldn't need it.

Macncheeseballs · 10/04/2020 14:04

The point is if you cycle alot you can eat anything you like and extend your life

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 10/04/2020 14:05

Who would pay for it?

Cyclists.

Why should you be allowed to ride on something that could damage property or injure someone but not be identifiable if you do?

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 10/04/2020 14:07

The point is if you cycle alot you can eat anything you like and extend your life

Of course you can't. You'll still lay down fatty deposits in your arteries if you eat shit. You'll still have high blood pressure if you eat a ton of high salt processed foods. You might mitigate some of the effects by cycling but not all. Exercise burns relatively few calories.

Lonelycrab · 10/04/2020 14:17

Well I had a lovely ride yesterday. Got no closer than about 3 metres from anyone. Everyone smiled at each other, walkers, runners, other riders.

I got dog shit sprayed all up my back and all over my bike as some dog walkers are careless. Witnessed another dog walker glued to his phone missed his pooch do a massive turd on the edge of the path. Do I hate dog walkers and want to see them banned? No of course I don’t.

Gods sake some of you lot need to learn to live n let live. Stop putting everything in a little box. It’s very narcissistic if nothing else; other viewpoints exist and that’s just life.

MsTSwift · 10/04/2020 14:20

It’s not a toned arse though is it. Eat less and cycle - lost 2 stone since autumn😁

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 10/04/2020 14:30

It’s not a toned arse though is it.

Mines very toned thanks. Yoga and Pilates - no inconvenience caused to anyone else, all done safely indoors.

MsTSwift · 10/04/2020 14:32

Honestly what is your problem with cyclists?! Were you knocked over as a child?! Did a bike kill your dog? You are coming across as a little odd - sure you are not but it’s weird alright

Exoffice · 10/04/2020 14:32

hearhooves, having a number plate doesn't mean you can be necessarily identified if you mow down a cyclist. It happened twice to DH that the car just drove off.

People passing by called the ambulance as he was hurt pretty badly - rather than having a scratch on his bike.

he was off work both time a few months. lost his income (as opposed to a scratch on a car). there was nobody to put a claim against at the wankers in the cars drove off.

Any thoughts on that and the meaning of being able to be held to account just because you have a number plate?

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 10/04/2020 14:35

I'm not the one telling others that they must be fat and not toned if they don't cycle.

I don't have s problem with responsible cyclists - cycle in the road, be aware of pedestrians, obey the highway code - no problem.

Right now, while we are locked down then everyone has to behave responsibly. I don't see fifty mile or two hour long bike rides, or families taking over pavements as behaving responsibly.
