What should we name our house?

We're buying a house (tomorrow) eek! And it's a terrace but someone somewhere has decided to call it 23A and there is no 23B or 23 Hmm so we want to name it! Any ideas? We have a dog called Holly so I liked Holly Cottage but maybe it's a bit twee. But we do live in a lovely village so it would fit :)

What colour is your front door?

"The one with the (colour) door" would be perfect... Posties would thank you, I'm sure...

Or use some other distinguishing feature....

"The one with the loud dog"
"The one with the overgrown hedge"

etc etc

MikeUniformMike · 18/03/2020 09:24

I'm not sure if all post delivers can read - I often get next door's mail.
The two digits are different, so it's not something like mistaking 73 for 75. I suspect that someone can't be bothered to open the gate and go up a couple of steps, then take a few steps to the door.

florascotia2 · 18/03/2020 09:54

optical delusion makes a very good point.
As well as consulting the Post Office, you need to ask your solicitor what the Land Registry position is. And your local authority re Council Tax etc.
Also, as you have already discovered, problems arise when a house name or number does not match one of the databases used by banks, credit card companies, insurance companies, online retailers, PayPal etc etc etc. They can get quite complicated.

copycopypaste · 18/03/2020 09:57

Name it 'Spot' so when people ask you why you've named your house spot, you can say, 'i liked this spot so much, I picked up' Grin

MissMoiselle · 18/03/2020 10:03

@Goatinthegarden ha! I do the same!! My car (Beetle) is Big Bertha. Grin
We live in Spain and I've already decide that when we buy a house here I'll either call it The Inigo Montoya or Don Diego DeLa Vega.
@IanHislopForPm, name it whatever you like. There are no rules. IMO, the funnier, the better. Why not "yoursurname" Mansion? Or Terry the Terraced?

Rollinghillside · 18/03/2020 10:05

Tell us more about your house. That will help us name it for you!

OP wants a name, so let's give her a name rather than 20 reasons why she shouldn't!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 18/03/2020 10:12

Holly House rather than cottage :). Go for it!

theoriginalmadambee · 18/03/2020 10:15

I have seen the equivalent to 'BankRupt' where I'm from Grin.

Reginabambina · 18/03/2020 10:17

Given the timing of your purchase I’d opt for Corona Cottage or maybe Isolation Lodge,.

JezebelJinx · 18/03/2020 11:11

Op, you will come across as a bit mental.

You don't mention that it has dominant Holly bushes. You don't mention it's a cottage. So why the hell would you randomly name a terrace house Holly Cottage?

It's ridiculous and completely batshit. If you want a house with a name.. buy one.

Other posters have touched on the practical problems but there's nothing like being rejected for a bank account application or an electoral registration card going missing in the post because you've come up with the twee idea of naming your numbered house something inappropriate and random Confused

HavelockVetinari · 18/03/2020 11:17

How about Belle End?

LolaDarkdestroyer · 18/03/2020 11:20

Terrance the terraced (aka number 23)

Papergirl1968 · 18/03/2020 11:23

Corona Cottage has a certain ring to it, I think Smile

Dobbytheelf · 18/03/2020 11:30

Ian Hislop's Love Shack, 23 xxxx road etc.

z0fl0ra · 18/03/2020 11:36

I don’t think you can call it Holly Cottage really when it’s a Terrace, id just call it 23 personally or if you insist Holly House, 23 xxx street ? Just drop the a

PhilCornwall1 · 18/03/2020 11:42

COVID and change the number to 19.

Spied · 18/03/2020 11:50

I don't like 'cottage' when it's actually a terrace.

Oliversmumsarmy · 18/03/2020 11:59

Unless it a quaint thatched roofed house in a Midsommer Murder type village then it is reminiscent of Vera and Jack Duckworth calling their terraced house The Old Rectory
If there isn’t a 23 then just say you are number 23.

HollyIvy5 · 18/03/2020 12:01

My house is named Endless Summer. I live on the coast.

Pascha · 18/03/2020 12:33

My house is 2 Somebody Cottages, OtherVillage Road, Village

But I live on a long country road with a fair number of groups of houses and linear numbering makes no sense, everybody has a name.

Pils have a name and a number and nobody ever uses the name, it's just for them. Pointless.

Davros · 18/03/2020 12:41

El Nido

00Sassy · 18/03/2020 12:46

ViciousJackdaw · 18/03/2020 12:47

PhilCornwall1 · 18/03/2020 12:48

RobynSH · 18/03/2020 12:48
