What should we name our house?

We're buying a house (tomorrow) eek! And it's a terrace but someone somewhere has decided to call it 23A and there is no 23B or 23 Hmm so we want to name it! Any ideas? We have a dog called Holly so I liked Holly Cottage but maybe it's a bit twee. But we do live in a lovely village so it would fit :)

Holly Tree Cottage is nicer (then plant some holly, even in tubs if no garden space). I wanted to call ours Bumble Bee Cottage or Christmas Cottage, but never got round to it. The fact that it's listed gives it some naming validity. Terraces can definitely be cottages, depending on their age and style.

I lived in a house which the previous owner had called “the universal energy centre” I had no idea until I went to a get a fishing permit and the post office told me lol.

I'm pretty sure - although I could be wrong - that if it's allocated a number you will not officially be allowed to give it a name instead. I had a friend who tried to do this - she was on an estate - and was told she could put a name on the house but the official address would remain a number. This makes sense as numbers were introduced to make it easy for posties etc to identify them - if everyone changed from numbers to names it would be mayhem! I have a house with a name and every other delivery they can't find the bloody house anyway

whateverhappenstheremore · 18/03/2020 06:43

And having a name and a number is definitely hyacinth bucket

longwayoff · 18/03/2020 07:37

Your house has to have a number. Otherwise, postal services wouldn't know which Chez Nous, Bide a Wee or Dunroamin to deliver to what with everyone in the road insisting on displaying their originality via a house name. Many of us locals have been irritated for years by lovely old Oak House, complete with ancient tree, being renamed BriNora. It's still got a number though.

Pinkywoo · 18/03/2020 07:41

@GaraMedouar you beat me to it!

IndoorWeather · 18/03/2020 07:41

Definitely not Holly Cottage if it’s a terraced house with no holly. I think I’d see if I could renumber it logically as 23..

Stickybeaksid · 18/03/2020 07:43

There is legit a house where I live called corona villa....

iano · 18/03/2020 07:49

Calling it holly cottage is a bit weird if there is no holly and it's not a cottage.
Drop the a and make it 23

Frenchw1fe · 18/03/2020 07:50

In France they are rolling out numbers for all houses now to make it easier for La Poste.
Our's hasn't been done yet but I have it on good authority that houses are numbered according to the amount of metres situated from the main road.
So in our hamlet there are 11 houses but our number is likely to be about 180 as we are at the very top of the lane.

GinUnicorn · 18/03/2020 08:04

MikeUniformMike · 18/03/2020 08:11

Call it IanHislopForPm House.

GaraMedouar · 18/03/2020 08:16

@Pinkywoo - Grin had to be done

opticaldelusion · 18/03/2020 08:20

I had a friend who named his house. He got personalised stationery printed with the name. In italics. And quotes. I used to cringe every time I thought about it.

opticaldelusion · 18/03/2020 08:22

BTW, you can't unilaterally change the postal address, e.g. the house number. You'll get in a right tangle with electoral roll, utilities companies, land registry, etc.

I fancy calling my bungalow Juniper Hall coz I drink lots of gin, sounds very appropriate.

AcrobaticCardigan · 18/03/2020 08:33

A random house in the middle of a street with no number, while those around it do would be chaos for deliveries etc...

Pinkywoo · 18/03/2020 08:34

Colin McHouseface?

yikesanotherbooboo · 18/03/2020 08:43

We have a semidetached cottage in a row with a number. The previous owner gave it a very twee ( imo) name that my snobbish nature cringed at when we first had it. Over the years I have grown to appreciate it; it certainly helps visitors and delivery people to find us .

Ginfordinner · 18/03/2020 08:46

Why would you deliberately want to make it difficult for people to find your house?

I used to do a paper round, and named houses without numbers were a nightmare to find.

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 18/03/2020 09:07

I'd just have it officially re-numbered as 23. To name it when all others are numbered will make it stand out for all the wrong reasons. You will look a bit Hyacinth Bucket.

Standrewsschool · 18/03/2020 09:14

Does it overlook something such as an orchard. - Orchard View?

Is it the end terrace - Cottage End?

Can you adapt the street name slightly?

Or just plant a holly bush.
