What should we name our house?

We're buying a house (tomorrow) eek! And it's a terrace but someone somewhere has decided to call it 23A and there is no 23B or 23 Hmm so we want to name it! Any ideas? We have a dog called Holly so I liked Holly Cottage but maybe it's a bit twee. But we do live in a lovely village so it would fit :)

Get it renumbered, and just put a 23 on the door for the postman, etc.

I think it takes a while for house names to show up on the drop-down lists (at least, it took a couple of years before my parents' house name showed up, much to dad's disgust!) and the only people it matters to, on the drop-down lists are delivery people, really.

My house has a name but the DC have decided it is called Mary instead. Our old house is called Max Confused.

MikeUniformMike · 18/03/2020 13:11

How about Notwentythree as a name - plays on No and Number.

MzHz · 18/03/2020 13:18

Friends of my dad called their house Seaview.

They lived in Petersfield 😂🤣

MikeUniformMike · 18/03/2020 13:43

Grin Seaview. Luv it.

funpetals · 18/03/2020 13:47

My house Grin

Not Holly Cottage because it’s not a cottage.

CircleofWillis · 18/03/2020 15:13

Before anyone else says it can't be a cottage if it is terraced I lived in a lovely cottage a bit like the first picture below when I was at Uni.

I used to deal with street naming and numbering (many years ago)

  1. You will have to keep the number (sorry) unless you can get your deeds changed to 23? was there a 23 in the past?
  2. You can name it whatever you like, as long as it's not offensivethere isn't another "Colin" in the same street Grin to avoid duplication
  3. The Royal Mail have PAF - Postal Address File - for every property. These are allocated when homes are built (unless it's carried from old files) so if you want to change, you could try them first for some assistance?
  4. If you do name your house, you'll need to inform lots of people - check with your Local Authority - either they will do a mailshot for you (we did) or they will send you a list of contacts for you to do the mailshot to.

Personally I prefer Derek Grin

I'm a mid terrace and have a number and a name. Not Mrs Bucket-ish at all. Number is big so deliveries easily find their way to us. I chose a tongue in cheek name which gives everyone who comes to the door a smile 👍
Go for it!

longwayoff · 18/03/2020 21:30

Bucket Cottage. Or, if you're feeling particularly upmarket, Bucket Hall.

Love a good house name.
We have a name and number

A senior colleague used to live in Beaumont House, Beaumont Street. I imagined a large, mansion-y house at the end of a long road. Turned out to be an ordinary house, in an fairly narrow street, full of other identical and equally ordinary houses. I was secretly impressed they'd got away with that name. Grin

Another colleague was proud that his house didn't have a number, just a name. He'd proudly named it after a local hill. The hill name was in Gaelic (let's call it 'Gaelic-hill-name') Another colleague joked that his house was called "Gaelic-hill-name I'll spell it for you", which he said in every phone call.

Calling your terraced house Holly Cottage is no more naff or twee than a housing association flat I know, with the name Bali-Hi.

But Corona Villa, as suggested upthread, has a certain je ne sais quoi about it ...

Well, that’s what they tell you.

MyNameHasBeenTaken · 18/03/2020 22:28

Holly-colin-cottsge
Probably better without hyphen?

MikeUniformMike · 19/03/2020 09:19

Isn't hill cnocán?

Call your house Bryn. It's welsh for hill.

Thevoice2019 · 19/03/2020 20:44

Please don’t name it. Just keep it numbered.

TroysMammy · 19/03/2020 20:50

Stuffem Hall
Fork Hall

I've heard emergency services dislike houses which just have a name because it can be difficult to find them quickly. Numbers are best.

Bluntness100 · 19/03/2020 21:00

I think you need to keep the number, but can change it to 23. There is a complex process to name a house officially, so everyone knows which house it is, from the post office to utilities to council tax etc. But if you’re willing to do it, do it.

I also think if it’s not a cottage or akin to a cottage it’s probably not a great idea to name it a cottage. Calling it a cottage doesn’t make it one.

You can keep the number and just add the name, so stick a sign outside, with both, and start using the name.

Holly is an interesting one as it is both a girls name and a bush/tree, is there anything else about the house or yourselves which you can add, all really we know is it’s a terrace and your dogs called holly and you live in a nice village.

Does it have a view? Any specific features?

Bluntness100 · 19/03/2020 21:03

What about

The Hollies
