Has anyone else seen this on facebook? Terrifying and actually really freaking me out. This book was written in 1981. I can't stop thinking about it.... Blush

I'm under the impression that the location was originally a location in Russia and was later changed to Wuhan

LolaSmiles · 29/02/2020 07:27

Isn't it fairly common for some science fiction and dystopian books to draw just enough on some ideas that could plausibly happen ?
It's fairly sensible to consider some sort of disease spreading across the globe as a plot idea.
Not a conspiracy though.

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 29/02/2020 07:37

L.Ron Hubbard made a (tax-wise) legitimate religion out of his crappy science-pulp-fiction.

People love this sort of stuff.

Mummadeeze · 29/02/2020 07:44

Someone should ask him why he changed the virus name from Gorski to Wuhan in a later edition of the book. That would be interesting to know. For the people saying his virus was man made and this one isn’t - doh! You don’t actually know how this one started for sure. There could have been an evil scientist who has unleashed it on the public - you get serial killer doctors, and suicide bombers etc. I don’t think it would be impossible to imagine someone deliberately trying to cause harm via spreading something deliberately. Not saying it happened this way obviously but it isn’t impossible.

chuffoff · 29/02/2020 07:50

Total coincidence but a brilliant one. Koontz and his publisher should be milking it for all it's worth

CSIblonde · 29/02/2020 07:54

Don't know re conspiracy theory. Do remember some Scientist talking about genetic experiments & scientifically engineered diseases. He said any weird, awful thing you could think of has been done, or is being done on the quiet, by Scientists now , whatever the health, moral or ethical implications may be: & we are naive if we think it isnt. It was during some documentary on Nazi experiments on children & where those scientists, not the actual torturer Dr Mengele, ended up post war (the US & Brazil).

Nixen · 29/02/2020 08:02

Sylvia Browne was a fucking whack job

PineappleDanish · 29/02/2020 08:21

So what's the "conspiracy"? That a high-profile author popped over to Wuhan and infected loads of people?

It's not a conspiracy. It's a COINCIDENCE.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 29/02/2020 08:27

Fortunately, this answers all the questions I will ever have about COVID-19. Twitter link Much better than Dean Koontz.

Lionsleepstonight · 29/02/2020 08:36

Unless it appears in a Simpsons episode, I'm not convinced.

PlomBear · 29/02/2020 08:47

Wuhan is China’s 9th largest city. It’s like somebody setting a novel in Coventry. Or Chicago in the USA.

It’s also really well known for universities, scientific and technological development parks and research institutes. Seems like a logical place to set a book about a man made Chinese virus.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 29/02/2020 08:48

@Jaichangecentfoisdenom. GrinGrin

luckylavender · 29/02/2020 08:56

It's total bollocks

I keep thinking about Stephen King's book The Stand!

And me... Love that book, have you read the unabridged version?

I think I'll wait until it gets to those proportions before I worry about coronvirius

lljkk · 29/02/2020 09:07

It's not terrifiying. It's utter fiction.

I'll say what's scary:
Multi-drug-resistant TB is all over the world. That shit is scary.
Middle east is still awash with violence. Innocents dying. No end in sight. That is terrifying.

Honestly if only conspiracy theorists weren't so flippin' lazy. If only they'd turn their talents to making great fiction and calling it fiction & we could have some great stage plays, movies & novels. Not nonsense being passed off as reality.

MilkGoatee · 29/02/2020 09:17

A high profile author. Who wrote the book 40 years ago. And named the virus Gorki-400 as the Soviet "threat" was still very much in people's mind. Not so much in the naughties when the Soviet Union had broken down and other powers were on the rise. Good call to change and update such names as it wasn't as such relevant to the plot where the disease had originated (as in, it's origin didn't feature in the plot resolution - a notorious weak point in DK's novels anyway) but Gorki as such would be meaningless to many and not have a fright factor at all (as Wuhan wouldn't have for many people either, I'm sure, until now).

lovelyupnorth · 29/02/2020 09:22

Step away from Facebook.

PineappleDanish · 29/02/2020 09:28

@Jaichangecentfoisdenom that has to be a pisstake. How terrifying it must be to live your life caught up in all those conspiracies and think that everyone and everything is out to get you.

crustycrab · 29/02/2020 09:34

@Bouledeneige

In the novel it wasn't called Wuhan 400. Really doesn't need explaining why it's rubbish. The pictures are photoshopped. They are fake

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 29/02/2020 09:35

@PineappleDanish - one can only hope! But with Trump saying (and being believed) that COVID-19 is a hoax perpetrated by the Democrats, I fear not! I wish I could find the source!

moondance19 · 29/02/2020 09:38

I loved Stephen Kings “The Stand”.....both the book and the TV series. I came across it in a charity shop the other day, always wanted to read it again, but..... decided to give it a miss. Too close for comfort. Grin

dementedpixie · 29/02/2020 09:39

The pages arent photoshopped. They are from 2 different books though

crustycrab · 29/02/2020 09:48

You're telling me that third photo is from an actual book? It's not.

crustycrab · 29/02/2020 09:51

The virus was called Gorky-400 in the 1981 novel.

PaddyF0dder · 29/02/2020 09:54

Wow, what a conspiracy:

  1. Call Dean Koontz, hack horror writer
  2. Tell him to mention Wuhan in a book written decades ago
  3. Release a bug with almost no similarities decades later

Genius!
