Has anyone else seen this on facebook? Terrifying and actually really freaking me out. This book was written in 1981. I can't stop thinking about it.... Blush

I hope one day the authorities will deal with conspiracy theorists in the same way they do looters.

KrisAkabusi · 28/02/2020 22:54

Hundreds of sci-fi and thrillers are written every year. You can find predictions for absolutely everything if you look through enough of them retrospectively!

The film Outbreak is more accurate

Apparently bats can live for 40 years (pangolins 20), and while googling that I found this article:

www.google.com/amp/s/qz.com/1805422/wuhan-virology-lab-unable-to-quell-china-coronavirus-conspiracies/amp/

PickleMyPepper · 28/02/2020 23:03

I think the second one has already been disproven too.
I'm sure a dog has tested positive for coronavirus, which blows the 'only humans can carry it' out of the water.

PlomBear · 28/02/2020 23:10

I’m not sure that this kind of nonsense is helping anybody. Especially the anxiety ridden Mumsnetters.

susandelgado · 28/02/2020 23:10

I keep thinking about Stephen King's book The Stand!

NotTerfNorCis · 28/02/2020 23:10

An academic from Nottingham University disputed that thing about the dog. He reckoned it most likely picked something up from the environment.

comesavemenow · 28/02/2020 23:13

I would say the jetsons cartoon was really good at prediction future Hmm . Get a grip OP. and read what's next, it will go as quickly as it came. So even if it was true only a few weeks left for it, considering the fact that weather is going to get warmer and that will automatically reduce any flue like illnesses.

comesavemenow · 28/02/2020 23:15

oh and George Orwell was a seer too. Case in point his book 1984

(btw this is all sarcasm if you think I am serious)

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 28/02/2020 23:16

I recall Konntz's 'The Eyes of Darkness' very clearly, as for some reason it stuck with me, and I still have a copy. The manufactured disease was Gorky 400. Not Wuhan. It was developed by the Russians, not China and it had a 100% kill rate, bar one exception.

Enjoyed the book at the time though, and 'The Stand!' The post-apocalyptic (disease) genre always has the power to chill, especially when a government is involved and tries to cover up what's happening.

But it's not really time to worry about the Coronavirus and some weird prophecy of doom, fun though these books are. The end of the world isn't nigh ... yet ...

DreamingofSummer · 28/02/2020 23:22

Blame it on George Bush or Stanley Kubrick or

AlternativePerspective · 28/02/2020 23:22

Some people need their internet privileges removed for their own safety.

Devlesko · 28/02/2020 23:38

There are those who believe what we are told and those who question what we are told?
At one end are those that believe everything as gospel and the other end that question everything.

Willow2017 · 29/02/2020 00:09

Love Dks books.
Dean Koontz bases a lot of his books on actual science which he researches carefully but he isn't a fortune teller. He always explains the science behind the idea, cites experts who have helped him and where he has tweaked it to fit the story.
All that stuff about that book is just that, crap!
Perhaps you should check the facts of the nonsense thats spouted online before panicking in future?
I mean its not even a good theory... protagonists, type of bio weapon, death and infection rate etc etc are all completely different not to mention that Its two totally unrelated book quotations ffs!

For gods sake dont read any of his books you will self implode! (Currently reading second one in a series of 5 and my nerves are in tatters 🤣🤣)

OldQueen1969 · 29/02/2020 00:16

If you are interested in life imitating art concepts, check out the concept of Synchromysticism...... it's often caught up with Illuminati predictive programming tosh, but also has some links to Jungian archetypal theory..... an interesting way to while away a few hours on Youtube at least Wink As Dirk Gently will confirm EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED :)

SylviaC · 29/02/2020 00:24

Got all excited to read about a conspiracy theory but the pics are so tiny I can't actually read it - can anyone even explain what this thread is about. Confused

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 29/02/2020 00:25

A monkey on a typewriter for an infinite amount of time will almost surely “predict” any given event. That’s just statistical mechanics innit?

Teddy1970 · 29/02/2020 00:27

I thought it was cobblers, but then I read it was called the Wuhan 400 in the book..it just seems such a random place to use, out of all the well known places in China such as Beijing and Shanghai the author uses that place, unless he knew there were scientific research labs there maybe? I don't think there's anything untoward though, I think it's just a coincidence. Don't stress OP!

BoomBoomsCousin · 29/02/2020 00:33

But it's not vaguely true....it's strangely accurate in detail

It's made up OP, that's not what Koontz wrote. Your naivety in accepting something that is so clearly suspect without performing basic checks does you no favours and your stupidity in propagating it does our society harm.

I'm sure you see it as just passing on an interesting bit of gossip, but these sorts of tales told over and over wear down at people's trust in medical advice and making the efforts to stymie spread much harder and, ultimately, leading to far more deaths than would otherwise happen.

TheMemoryLingers · 29/02/2020 00:56

I'd suggest not reading the predictions of Nostradamus, OP.

In other words, if you take enough random stuff that's been written over a long period of time, you'll find things that appear to relate to something in the present.
