Enough so enough, I’m not saying this because of what’s happened To Caroline flack
Bit two contestants have taken their lives after being on this show where they are pitted against each other
Last night was awful how they all had to say who was the most vain, lazy fake

Come
On we’ve got rid of Jeremy Kyle now it’s time to bin love island

OP posts:
Lardlizard · 18/02/2020 15:51

Love island not live island

OP posts:
bigchris · 18/02/2020 15:52

But you still watched it !

bigchris · 18/02/2020 15:53

I never watched it but Last night was awful how they all had to say who was the most vain, lazy fake is this what is classed as entertainment these days ?

Lardlizard · 18/02/2020 15:53

Yes because i wanted to see the video montage, but that wasn’t show it was just a few words at the start

OP posts:
Lardlizard · 18/02/2020 15:54

Let’s just put this to the vote

LolaDarkdestroyer · 18/02/2020 15:54

No as none of the deaths were directly because of the show. And it's a bit rich that you watched it last night.

LagunaBubbles · 18/02/2020 15:54

So once you had seen what you wanted to see why did you watch the rest? Confused

katienana · 18/02/2020 15:55

The contestants seemed to take the game you mention as a bit of fun.
The two contestants who died, Sophie and Mike had other problems such as depression, using drugs and alcohol, debt and bereavement. It's very sad and I'm not saying social media doesn't play a part but I really believe that drugs and alcohol are the real evil in all this.

Lardlizard · 18/02/2020 15:56

Because I wanted to see if the tone was different at all

OP posts:
P1nkHeartLovesCake · 18/02/2020 15:57

Why?

Caroline was in trouble for abusing her bf? She got very bad press for that as you’d expect Is that love island fault?

She must of been struggling with mental health to end her life, how is that love islands fault?

Shall we ban fame all together incase someone struggles with mental health later on?

Do you know how many people kill themselves each year? Shall we ban all the jobs they people have done too?

Lardlizard · 18/02/2020 15:58

Don’t you think it’s better now Jeremy kyle is gone ?
Don’t you think we should try n raise the bar

Do we want teens growing up watching this ?

OP posts:
Lardlizard · 18/02/2020 15:59

Yes I’m aware around one person every 90 mins takes their own life in the U.K. alone
Which is terrible

OP posts:
Fishcakey · 18/02/2020 16:05

No I don't.

It's linked to the lust for fame that people have. It used to be that people wanted to be award-winning singers or actresses or sportswomen or whatever, and would work for years to get there but now people just want to be famous for fame's sake, without the talent to back it up. From what I've seen, most Love Island contestants would swim through a lake of ebola infested vomit if there was a radio interview on the other side. It's this desire to be famous which needs to be examined.

AStarSoBright · 18/02/2020 16:09

No I don't think it should be cancelled. The show is not responsible for any of the deaths.

bigchris · 18/02/2020 16:11

I think the other thing to look at is you tube stars, tick tock etc
Teenagers doing stupid stuff for click bait

Love island is responsible for contributing to the fame hungry society we live in but not suicide Imo

MummySharn · 18/02/2020 16:12

I don’t think it should be cancelled

loobyloo1234 · 18/02/2020 16:12

YABU to watch it and then say it should be cancelled

Laura Whitmore has already said the care throughout and the after care both the presenters and contestants have on the show is second to none. In my honest opinion, all 3 of the suicides you are referring to would have happened regardless of Love Island. It is a MH issue not a LI issue.

It is watched by a lot of people – and is light entertainment. No one is forced to go on the show. Some contestants make a lot of money after going on there. So no – I do not think it should be cancelled.

It can’t be compared to Jeremy Kyle either. The show was set up to ridicule people. Love Island is not

bigchris · 18/02/2020 16:13

Don’t you think it’s better now Jeremy kyle is gone ?

What's better ? The show being on or not has had zero impact on my life

NameChangeNugget · 18/02/2020 16:15

Very hypocritical to watch it OP Biscuit

Chillicheese123 · 18/02/2020 16:15

Umm no. Caroline flacks mental health problems were not a result of her presenting love island.

Mike T had a drug problem and money issues

Sophie Gradon’s death was more linked to her struggle with ADHD and drug/alcohol consumption

Don’t see why love island is to blame tbh

OneOfManyDays · 18/02/2020 16:15

I think it should be binned, along with X factor, Geordie Shore and the million other wannabe shows. My desire to cancel has nothing to do with the recent events surrounding Caroline Flack however, it's more that this culture we are perpetuating where being famous or instafamous is the be-all and end-all of success is simply disgusting. Similarly, where is the desire to be great at somethng and be a success for your talent anymore - now its all about looks, social media likes and being fame hungry. Reality TV has gone beyond desperate. I really do fear for our kids growing up in this culture. I find it really disturbing

AlternativePerspective · 18/02/2020 16:15

I think we need to have a serious look at why it is that people see success as having gone on to one of these shows and becoming a “celebrity” as a result.

Back in the days of x-factor I remember contestants in the audition rounds talking about how this was their life, how they didn’t want to go back to waiting on tables etc, when in truth there’s nothing wrong with just having a job and most will never find fame on these programmes.

I think that it is very evident that the kinds of people who apply to go on these programmes are people who already have low self worth and see this as an opportunity to become accepted and when that doesn’t happen, for some, it pushes them over the edge.

They likely already had MH issues and going on one of these shows won’t have helped.

I think all reality tv has had its day tbh. Love island, gogglebox, towie, made in Chelsea, And I’m a celebrity/has been ” as generally this is just full of wannabe’s who came from all the above shows. I’m sure there are more.

I also think that people need to ask themselves why they feel the need to watch this kind of drivel and why they get enjoyment from people being pitted against each other in this way or, in the case of the tv talent shows, being humiliated for entertainment value (they have to go through several auditions to get to the point where they’re going to be laughed at so it’s very deliberate on the part of the production teams.).

I have never watched love island in my life and have no intentions of doing so ever because it’s absolute shite, you only have to read about it or seeeee a trailer to know that. And I was horrified that it is apparently so popular that they commissioned a second series in the year.

So yes, I think it needs to be scrapped, and all the other shite out there as well.

Aposterhasnoname · 18/02/2020 16:16

Because I wanted to see if the tone was different at all

But how would you know if the tone was different if you never watch it?
