I'm 43 and swooning at meeting a weird 90s indie teenage band crush tonight!!

Light-hearted!

I'm a sane(ish) kinda gal. I'll also admit to having the most random taste in fellas. It harks back to my days as a painfully right-on indie kid in the 90s

My crushes were James Dean Bradfield (Manics), Johnny Dean (Menswear), Brett Anderson (Suede), Brian Molko (Placebo)... and many more.

Tonight I saw My Life Story. I loved them back in the day. Jake, the lead singer did a free 'meet and greet' afterwards. I was like a daft school girl. Totally got a selfie.

What's happened to me,? FFS! 🤣 I never usually get star struck. Mid life crisis? 👀

Ah, you're reliving your youth!

MummySharn · 16/02/2020 02:13

I’d be the same!

cantthinkofauniquename · 16/02/2020 02:13

Omg, I loved My Life Story! I saw them at Warwick Student Union back in 97!

I still play the Golden Mile CD and my daughter loves the songs. Sparkle and April 1st are her faves (she's 12 lol).

Great taste in music! Grin

GetMeOffThisCycleOfMisery · 16/02/2020 02:28

Thanks for making me feel sane you beauts.

Jake must be in his 50s, but he was scissor kicking in his white leather Chelsea Boots, like 24 year old.

@cantthinkofauniquename they just released new material. Still got it.

I met my 90s indie band crush last year when his band were doing an acoustic set in Rough Trade. He told me he liked my coat and I instantly turned into a 16 year old giggling teenager.

poseysbobblehat · 16/02/2020 10:56

I met Andrew Ridgeley recently and was giddy for days !

cantthinkofauniquename · 16/02/2020 12:19

Off to find out more! Thanks @GetMeOffThisCycleOfMisery!

BitOfFun · 16/02/2020 15:46

I've been listening to Jamiroquai and Finlay Quaye all morning Blush

returnofthecat · 16/02/2020 16:08

To be fair, selfies weren't a thing back then, so it's not as if you could have got it out of your system as a school girl...!

isabellerossignol · 16/02/2020 16:11

If I met James Dean Bradfield I'd swoon. I'd remember me being 17 and skinny and him being on a poster on my wall wearing skinny white jeans and no one in 1993 could wear skinny white jeans unless they were him.

I know that's not who you actually met, but I get the sentiment behind it!

everythingisginandroses · 16/02/2020 16:16

Mmm, Jake Shillingford… I'm 44 and I get you entirely, OP. Nice to hear he has aged well.

Weatherforducks · 16/02/2020 16:20

I was into Indie music in the 90s (still am). Earlier this decade I bought a house next door to someone from one of the bands I liked (had seen them live many times). I was a bit star struck at first when him and his wife came to say hello, but soon got over it. I could never play their music in my house though, i’m sure he would have been flattered, but I would have found it a bit embarrassing!

GetMeOffThisCycleOfMisery · 16/02/2020 16:32

@BitOfFun I interviewed Finley a few years ago. He's a strange and very troubled man sadly. Such a shame, he had a great voice.

@isabellerossignol I've met James Dean Bradfield three times. The first I was struck dumb, the second time I was drinking with Super Furry Animals and he joined us, I was trying so hard to play it cool, but failed. He was tired and grumpy too. Third time was at Rough Trade Bout three years ago, he looked fab. I still would. 😉

@Weatherforducks I'd love to know the band in question please.

@bee222 who was it??

DressesWithPocketsRockMyWorld · 16/02/2020 16:41

I loved Johnny Dean!! I'm going to listen to menswear now.

GetMeOffThisCycleOfMisery · 16/02/2020 16:51

@DressesWithPocketsRockMyWorld he is very active on Twitter. I follow him.

You're not having a midlife crisis your just happily revisiting some lovely memories and I'm well jealous and really glad you had a fantastic night.

Littlegoth · 16/02/2020 16:58

These were my crushes. Met Brett last year and he posed for a picture with me even though he desperately didn’t want to 😃

GetMeOffThisCycleOfMisery · 16/02/2020 17:02

@Littlegoth so jealous. Would have loved to have met Brett, I did see him when I went to TOTP filming though. Cranberries and Elastica were there too.

Jarvis Cocker fobbed me off for an autograph, or photo at the stage door after their gig. Broke my heart!

@Mammatino thank you. It was such a brilliant gig. A bloke I went to school with was there too. N
Had not seen him 25 years. Proper flash black.

Ahh OP I’m jealous! I loved Damon Albarn, Brett Anderson, James Dean Bradfield and Noel Gallagher back in the day. DH met Brett last year when he took DDs to the Natural History Museum and he was there with his DC. I was at work and jealous for days afterwards Envy

trappedsincesundaymorn · 16/02/2020 17:09

I got a kiss on the cheek from Tim Booth (James). I was giddy for weeks.Grin

StoorieHoose · 16/02/2020 17:12

I shared a train carriage with Menswear coming back from Glastonbury in 1995.

I swooned one lunchtime walking back to work when Saul and Tim from James walked past me on our local high street as they were up here recording

I really want to go and see Jaime Harding from Marion when he plays in Edinburgh bit don't have anyone to go with

GetMeOffThisCycleOfMisery · 16/02/2020 17:32

@StoorieHoose shame you're so far away, I'd happily see Jaime, I didn't realise he was signing again. After all his drugs struggles and brushes with the law.

Also, anyone else reading this loving the memories. Shiiine On festival at Butlins in November is our indie Mecca. Will be my fourth year there, we book it without knowing the line up. The atmosphere is so amazing and the staff and punters a total delight. Google Shiiine On line up to get a flavour for the bands that play. My highlights over last few years have been BiS, Space, Levellers, Dreadzone, Embrace, My Life Story and Salad.

OP posts:
TheFluffiestCat · 16/02/2020 17:39

Levellers have been awesome every time I've seen them. I saw Mark Chadwick in a pub, pre-gig, once. My friend and I giggled like teenagers, bottled it, and didn't dare say hello let alone ask for an autograph. If Jez had been with him, I'm sure my friend would have gone for it.
