I'm 43 and swooning at meeting a weird 90s indie teenage band crush tonight!!

Light-hearted!

I'm a sane(ish) kinda gal. I'll also admit to having the most random taste in fellas. It harks back to my days as a painfully right-on indie kid in the 90s

My crushes were James Dean Bradfield (Manics), Johnny Dean (Menswear), Brett Anderson (Suede), Brian Molko (Placebo)... and many more.

Tonight I saw My Life Story. I loved them back in the day. Jake, the lead singer did a free 'meet and greet' afterwards. I was like a daft school girl. Totally got a selfie.

What's happened to me,? FFS! 🤣 I never usually get star struck. Mid life crisis? 👀

I went to see my favourite 90s band when I was 8 months pregnant. And PAID for a meet and greet. And danced, bounced and swooned so much I thought I’d go into early labour...!
Fair to say they were pretty horrified when I waddled up to them clutching my special edition CD for them to sign!!!

PhilSwagielka · 16/02/2020 20:39

I liked Strumpet!

GetMeOffThisCycleOfMisery · 16/02/2020 20:44

@ChazP Don't leave me hanging. Which band?

@PhilSwagielka That's one of my faves.

It was Extreme (the band that did More Than Words). I had THE biggest crushes on the lead singer and the guitarist!

twinkledag · 16/02/2020 21:14

I saw MLS few years ago when pregnant with DS! Love The Golden Mile!

GetMeOffThisCycleOfMisery · 16/02/2020 21:18

@ChazP I was more of a Nuno girl. 😍

@twinkledag Aren't they amazing?

Age has definitely improved Nuno. He was also the nicest member of the band when I met them. Immediately put me at ease.
I was never keen on people touching my bump. I made an exception for them...I’ve got a great photo of me in the middle of the 4 of them!

PhilSwagielka · 17/02/2020 09:32

One of my friends met James Dean Bradfield and got him to sign a book for her. Swoon.

Echobelly · 17/02/2020 09:42

I'd be starstruck by Jake too - my friends and I saw them live loads of times.

I have very happy 'indie kid' memories - 6th form was a really good time in my life, my mates and I were gigging and clubbing and (inevitably) making our own fanzine. I just hope my kids get to enjoy their own scenes in a similar way, whatever they are.

I'm not sure I'd want to go to any festivals of it though, I kind of want to keep the memories as they are and, sadly, I've lost touch with most of the mates who were into it or the ones I am in touch with wouldn't be into it enough.

I might take DH to see MLS next time they come to London though.

GrolliffetheDragon · 17/02/2020 12:12

If I met James Dean Bradfield I'd swoon.

I did a couple of times and I did swoon, get all tongue tied and suddenly was unable to string a coherent sentence together. Great way to create a good impression.

His eyes are so beautiful though.

Echobelly · 17/02/2020 13:01

Just realised my name here is a bit of a giveaway to my youthful interests!

PhilSwagielka · 17/02/2020 14:12

I did like Starshaped but I don't think I could cope with Shiine or the cruise version. I'd go stir crazy, and Shiine is a really long way from where I live.

leghairdontcare · 17/02/2020 14:21

I love James Dean Bradfield. That is all.

PhilSwagielka · 17/02/2020 14:33

Speaking of the Manics, anyone seen Sean Moore's tattoos? He's having a bit of a midlife crisis.

PinkMonkeyBird · 17/02/2020 14:35

Mmmmm Brian Molko...he is so cute! I also went through a phase of being obsessed with Noel Gallagher. It really is just a case of nostalgia and reliving your younger times. Enjoy!

I was into Indie music in the 90s (still am). Earlier this decade I bought a house next door to someone from one of the bands I liked (had seen them live many times). I was a bit star struck at first when him and his wife came to say hello, but soon got over it. I could never play their music in my house though, i’m sure he would have been flattered, but I would have found it a bit embarrassing!

Came to this thread very late but I need to know who this is!! Can you name change to not be outing?!

I shared a train carriage with Menswear coming back from Glastonbury in 1995.

I swooned one lunchtime walking back to work when Saul and Tim from James walked past me on our local high street as they were up here recording

I really want to go and see Jaime Harding from Marion when he plays in Edinburgh bit don't have anyone to go with

These are quintessential 90s anecdotes

Littlecaf · 19/12/2023 17:16

Once met Mark from the Levellers and my friend was in a band with Martin Rossiter from Gene and I just melted. 😳

Littlecaf · 19/12/2023 17:17

Argh Zombie thread! Sorry peeps

YukoandHiro · 19/12/2023 17:52

My fault @Littlecaf - I resurrected after searching to see if anyone else had been talking about the London Suede gigs this weekend

Weatherforducks · 19/12/2023 19:58

A York based band that likes to play gigs in a numerous amount of sheds. We once heard (through the walls) the lead singer, singing many of their hits with our neighbours daughter on piano - it was quite special. Lovely down to earth people, our neighbour once took our kids into his ‘studio’ to have a go on the drums.

Oooh lucky you! he still has that indie boy swagger too

Mine too 😂

GetMeOffThisCycleOfMisery · 21/12/2023 19:41

Thanks for resurrecting my post @Littlecaf! Quite timely as I was in London last night watching one of my other fave 90s bands... David Devant and His Spirit Wife. They were amazing. Not seen them since the mid 90s.

I saw Mark last month doing a solo set at Shiiine On festival. Levellers hopefully there next year.

If nobody on this thread has heard of Shiiine On, look up the past line ups. It's a weekend of absolute nostalgia and laughs. With the nicest bunch of people. I go every year with my mates.

Oh and saw you mentioned Suede. I'm seeing them next year with Manics. ☺️
