To refuse to send my child to a pirate party

A nursery friend of my 4 yo DS is having a pirate themed birthday party. I’m planning to decline the invite as I don’t think it’s appropriate for little children, or anyone for that matter, to dress up as a pirate - it’s glorifying and sentimentalising criminal men who raped, robbed and murdered.

FFS, piracy used to carry the death penalty until recently! You wouldn’t let your child go to a Nazi themed party - I can’t see much difference!

Let your kid go FFS. Kids don't know all that about pirates except for what they read in kids books and see in kids movies.

@Bluntness100 the OP! Grin

Guacamole · 08/02/2020 15:26

@sonypony
School is doing a pirate theme this half term in English and having a pirate dress up day. You're going to get fined if you keep them off for a half term so I think you'll have to lighten up or home educate.

Ours is doing Vikings and having a Viking themed dress up. Not sure how the OP would cope with that?

itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted · 08/02/2020 15:26

Wow you're one of THOSE parents

Don't be fucking ridiculous and grow up

If you ban pirates then you'll have to ban cowboys - after all they were responsible for hunting down indigenous populations of Indians. Or what about storm troopers - responsible for the Destruction of entire galaxies

squizzles · 08/02/2020 15:26

Btw, isn't there a pirate show on CBBC/Cbeebies?

Ispy123 · 08/02/2020 15:26

My children are 7 and 4 and currently playing with their playmobil pirate ship complete with pirates and cannons and "aaah harrrrr" . You really are thinking about this too much. Its a kids party, your child will have fun, unless your planning on telling him/her about real pirates and the raping, murdering and stealingConfused

JacquesHammer · 08/02/2020 15:27

You could pretend you misheard and send your child as a pilot....if it works for Ruth...!

10FrozenFingers · 08/02/2020 15:27

Hilarious.

shinyredbus · 08/02/2020 15:28

No more Milky Bars for you, kiddiwinks. They're a symbol of colonialist oppression.

He went to one on a canal barge, they played pass the parcel and had a karaoke, pin the feather on the parrot. It was great fun.

Missed opportunity for walking the plank. Disappointed.

Purplecatshopaholic · 08/02/2020 15:28

Bunnyfuller · 08/02/2020 15:29

Shiverrr me timbers, this a rum thread an’ no mistake.

Dear DM, please don’t judge all of us by this. The rest of us LOVE dressing up as pirates.

Verbena37 · 08/02/2020 15:29

There was much rape and pillaging in all era’s.
That’s like saying your child can’t go to a sport themed party - some footballers, cricketers etc have been found guilty of embezzlement, rape, murder etc.
But taking your child to a themed sports party doesn’t glorify those crimes.
Not taking your child to a pirate themed party will however potentially isolate them if their friends are going.

PhilCornwall1 · 08/02/2020 15:29

Oh I love these threads. Makes me realise I'm not crazy after all.

And it also confirms that snowflakes really are a thing. Now where did I my moustached dictators costume, I have a party to attend this evening.

fairlyplump · 08/02/2020 15:30

omg seriously, your poor kid lol

Seasonalanxiety · 08/02/2020 15:31

Time to bring out my favourite article.... woman's institute hosted a speaker to talk about piracy. They expected a "piracy through the ages" type thing and all dressed up as pirates. In fact the chap was talking about his experience as a Somali pirate hostage...
everyone took it in good part though...

Also comparing piracy to the nazi is moronic - Some people should seriously not be able to have children

You can't compare the systematic murder of millions of men women and children for no reason other than their religion with some fucking sailors who used to capture each other ships looking for treasure

KarmaStar · 08/02/2020 15:32

You asked,we responded, you are bvvu op,so if this a real thread, then please allow your dc to attend and enjoy the party.Else why ask?😲

Puzzledandpissedoff · 08/02/2020 15:32

Four years ago, I went to a Somali Pirate Party
Still there. Family trying to find the money, they say

Somee of the responses here are pure, gold, but this has to be the best Grin

I don't even care if the thread's a wind-up or not - it's just such fun!!
