To refuse to send my child to a pirate party

A nursery friend of my 4 yo DS is having a pirate themed birthday party. I’m planning to decline the invite as I don’t think it’s appropriate for little children, or anyone for that matter, to dress up as a pirate - it’s glorifying and sentimentalising criminal men who raped, robbed and murdered.

FFS, piracy used to carry the death penalty until recently! You wouldn’t let your child go to a Nazi themed party - I can’t see much difference!

This may be a zombie thread but very funny. Nice to be transported back to the old days whe all we had to worry about is kids parties.

Chloemol · 14/02/2021 21:44

Your poor child, he’s going to end up either not allowed by you to play with anyone, or have no friends who want to play with him because you have instilled your weird ideas in him

You are not doing your child any favours

DuchessofHastings1 · 14/02/2021 21:45

This cant be serious surely..

MissMarpleDarling · 14/02/2021 21:51

Oh you are one of THOSE mums..... poor child.

@Mashbocking1

We also went to a LOT of pirate parties. He has shown no violent, criminal or far right tendencies as yet.

That would be in spite of, not because of, your actions. Who knows what kids are picking up by having a laugh and joke with a fake plastic cutlasses, pretending to kill each other!

Personally I don’t find killing people a very funny or light-hearted matter, especially for pre-school kids! Future generations will judge us.

You might want to have a look at some of the books/stories that are studied in literacy or some of the stories in RE then.

And, like other posters have said, you obviously don't celebrate Halloween either... or do you?

redpencil77 · 15/02/2021 20:36

We'll take our leave and go....

Lonelyflower80 · 15/02/2021 20:45

Cbeebies has a pirate show called swashbuckle. I personally think that you ABU and your child will miss out, but it's your parenting choice.

LagunaBubbles · 15/02/2021 20:48

I am absolutely loving all the Pirate jokes!

PeachPiePip · 15/02/2021 20:50

Hahaha I remember reading this back last year. So funny. Bet you wish you’d gone to any bday party now 😂

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 15/02/2021 20:57

I remember this from last year! Simpler times Sad

Piglet89 · 15/02/2021 21:10

It will just be little ones running around though? I would focus my energy on the bigger battles to come ...

Grendalsmum · 15/02/2021 21:31

All the blokes in my family dress up as pirates at the drop of a ( tricorn ) hat. Personally l blame Alestorm.

You'd be better focusing them on the date of this thread.

Not a bad theme for a children's party.

superduster · 15/02/2021 23:03

I believe the death penalty that was in force until the 1990s was specifically for piracy with violence - piracy alone was not a hanging offence. It's a great useless fact.

superduster · 15/02/2021 23:04

@AdobeWanKenobi who cares about the date of the thread. We need more ridiculous stuff like this at the moment.

Helloandhelloagain · 15/02/2021 23:12

Err wtf

Probably people wasting their time offering advice to an OP who buggered off a year ago at a guess.

Vixyboo · 15/02/2021 23:30

Never mind the theme...eh have you missed that there's a lockdown?!

Vixyboo · 15/02/2021 23:31

Ah wait old thread?
