To refuse to send my child to a pirate party

A nursery friend of my 4 yo DS is having a pirate themed birthday party. I’m planning to decline the invite as I don’t think it’s appropriate for little children, or anyone for that matter, to dress up as a pirate - it’s glorifying and sentimentalising criminal men who raped, robbed and murdered.

FFS, piracy used to carry the death penalty until recently! You wouldn’t let your child go to a Nazi themed party - I can’t see much difference!

We had a pirate party for my DS's 3rd Birthday.

The kids dressed up, coloured treasure maps and did a treasure hunt for (chocolate) gold! It was great fun!

I think you're over-thinking this. Let him go.

Fake cutlasses are of course well-known to be a gateway weapon

😂

Evenquieterlife33 · 08/02/2020 15:21

We had a pirate party once. It was full of fun non violence based party games, there was definitely no rape or theft, or actual pirate based activity involved, nor any awareness raised of said actual pirate based crimes. There was shit loads of fun though and cake. I think if you worry about the origin of everything you will never leave the house.

By these morals, who should play the bad guys in school plays? Obviously, none of the children, because they might accidentally become baddies in the process.

TheFaerieQueene · 08/02/2020 15:22

These utter bastards.

To refuse to send my child to a pirate party
sonypony · 08/02/2020 15:22

I agree with you that it's not great. However it's standard and also small kids don't understand about what real pirates do. School is doing a pirate theme this half term in English and having a pirate dress up day. You're going to get fined if you keep them off for a half term so I think you'll have to lighten up or home educate.

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/02/2020 15:22

So i expect you’d all be fine with your kids getting dressed up in Nazi uniforms too!

Godwins Law. You lose the internet.

Davros · 08/02/2020 15:22

Brilliant. Local to us is The Pirate Castle which specialises in activities for children with disabilities and SN. I'd better have a worrrrrd with them

DoesItGetAnyBetter · 08/02/2020 15:22

Get over yourself

Sceptre86 · 08/02/2020 15:23

Gods, your poor kid. Yabu

midsomermurderess · 08/02/2020 15:24

I'm going to pop over to Reddit. They'll be having fun with this.

Bluntness100 · 08/02/2020 15:24

Alright hands up, who voted yanbu? 🤣

Divebar · 08/02/2020 15:24

If you tell them why you are not allowing him
to go you’d better hope the kids end up in different schools because otherwise you are lumbered with your “ fun sponge” label throughout his entire time at primary school.

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 08/02/2020 15:24

Good story OP!

nowlook · 08/02/2020 15:24

I've voted YANBU because I enjoy this kind of wind-up.

wanderings · 08/02/2020 15:24

Are you afraid that a game of "Walk the Plank" might go wrong, and that they might try to play it using the diving board of their swimming pool?

OscarWildesCat · 08/02/2020 15:24

Are you joking OP?, your poor Son, YABVU.....

ShinyRuby · 08/02/2020 15:24

This HAS to be a wind up!!
My dps were VERY anti-guns/weapons etc, very unfashionable in the 1970s but even they didn't mind pirate parties. I remember df making a really nice cutlass for a fancy dress pirate party & I managed not to kill anyone with it!
They could be fun sponges of the highest order sometimes but OP actually sounds worse!

Isleepinahedgefund · 08/02/2020 15:24

I only read this to see how ludicrous your reasons were 😄

Porkeypine · 08/02/2020 15:24

Deary me, I think you’re think far far too much in to this!!!! Poor kid

Sparklingbrook · 08/02/2020 15:25

Carole Middleton's party supplies company actually promotes such things. Disgusting.

Have you considered sending your child in stone-washed denim with a hold-all full of bootleg VHS tapes?
