To refuse to send my child to a pirate party

A nursery friend of my 4 yo DS is having a pirate themed birthday party. I’m planning to decline the invite as I don’t think it’s appropriate for little children, or anyone for that matter, to dress up as a pirate - it’s glorifying and sentimentalising criminal men who raped, robbed and murdered.

FFS, piracy used to carry the death penalty until recently! You wouldn’t let your child go to a Nazi themed party - I can’t see much difference!

Both my DC spent many years dressed up as Captain Jack Sparrow and are yet to get their first ASBO.

I feel really sorry for your DS.

dderrick · 10/02/2020 09:51

Y'arrrrrrr

GayGrandma · 10/02/2020 10:06

Don't suppose you let him watch Swashbuckle either?

muchado · 10/02/2020 10:17

Oh for goodness sake let your child go to the pirate party. My so- called mother sent me to a school fancy dress party dressed as a nun and it scarred me for life! Let the poor kid fit in.

rubyandbumpsmum · 10/02/2020 10:22

This is the most hilarious themed thread ever!! I cant believe someone would actually be this insane lol!
Poor child.... way to be ostracized forever more!! Lol "that's the child with the crazy mother"

BlindUser · 10/02/2020 10:44

@Mashbocking1
I'm not sure about anyone else but I was quite curious about your name so I did a search for Mashbocking to see if it had any relation to Piracy I only found one reference M Ashbocking apparently a used car salesperson could this be the relation to piracy?

BubblyBluePebbles · 10/02/2020 11:23

😄 Thanks for the laugh. Was having a moody morning until I read this! YABU.

lyndseylou43 · 10/02/2020 11:27

Pirates were endorsed by the Royal Navy until it suited them not to. privateers were not raping and murdering that is an ahistorical myth. They did act as a type of militia on the sea to avoid open conflict between nations a proxy if you will. So to say your child can’t go to a party based on anti pirate propaganda is unreasonable

101waystoworry · 10/02/2020 11:31

Goodness, people are being incredibly harsh! I do agree with you in some aspects, however, I think that pirates have evolved (like witches or wizards) and this is a different context.

If you really feel strongly, don't let your LO go and maybe set up a playdate with the birthday child. I wouldn't tell the parent your reason though. ♡

Blahblahblah99 · 10/02/2020 11:39

I can only assume the OP is posting for attention and LOLs

IJustLovePirates · 10/02/2020 11:41

I’ve been dressing up as a pirate since I was 10 😀

iklboo · 10/02/2020 11:45

IT IS A TROLL - MNHQ have left the thread up because of the jokes and puns.

Giraffey1 · 10/02/2020 11:56

Can this be for real?!

Giraffey1 · 10/02/2020 11:57

I was going to suggest it might be a troll so am relieved to see I was right. Very entertaining, though!

Lweji · 10/02/2020 12:10

privateers were not raping and murdering that is an ahistorical myth.

Not more than any regular armies of the time, I'd think, rather.

Woolyheads · 10/02/2020 13:44

While what you say is true the type of pirate these children will be dressing up as will have eye patches, bandanas and swords. They’ll also likely be clean, beardless and sober. Different sort of pirate.

amispeakingenglish · 10/02/2020 14:11

I had a pirate party for my child on the Golden Hind, which was a roaring success. Plus it was a great costume for school charity dress up events..

You are being ridiculous.

amispeakingenglish · 10/02/2020 14:14

Ha Ha, what about cowboys then? Or Puritans, responsible for the decimation of the Native American population, not sure about numbers but am sure its more if not equal to the Nazis tally

Lweji · 10/02/2020 14:44

Or aliens. We all know what they are capable of.

iklboo · 10/02/2020 15:30

Or aliens. We all know what they are capable of.

I think we need to ask you some probing questions about that attitude. Grin

Motherofajuggernaut · 10/02/2020 16:53

PFB

iklboo · 10/02/2020 16:55

@Motherofajuggernaut - nope. MNHQ confirmed troll.

helpIhateclothesshopping · 10/02/2020 18:27

You're going to enjoy your child's school days then. My kids had pirate dress up day at school as part of a topic on pirates. The more you ban things, the more intrigued kids tend to be by them.

PinkiOcelot · 10/02/2020 18:34

Give over!! Fuck me!!

Harls1969 · 10/02/2020 18:43

Well...at the previous school I worked at, we used to have a 'Pirate Day'. We'd all dress up and we'd get a bloke in who'd do lots of pirate themed activities. It was great. 🤷
