To refuse to send my child to a pirate party

Mashbocking1 · 08/02/2020 15:03

A nursery friend of my 4 yo DS is having a pirate themed birthday party. I’m planning to decline the invite as I don’t think it’s appropriate for little children, or anyone for that matter, to dress up as a pirate - it’s glorifying and sentimentalising criminal men who raped, robbed and murdered.

FFS, piracy used to carry the death penalty until recently! You wouldn’t let your child go to a Nazi themed party - I can’t see much difference!

Let him go to the party - living with you, he’ll need a bit of fun!

glennamy · 10/02/2020 22:50

Get a life FFS or your children will end up miserable like you!

msgreen · 11/02/2020 09:16

It’s only a party , they are boys let them be boys , fun is the plan not murder
Plank walking or anything else.
Be careful you will single your child out and he will end up friend less or worse bullied.
Sometimes we have to put our opinions aside , as parents a happy child is more important.
Kids are ,believe it or not smart enough to know the difference between make believe
And reality.the more you restrict him now the more he will rebel later ,
We are no sugar or processed food household, I was always uneasy about the junk people gave their kids at party’s etc
But although occasionally my 16 year old will
Eat something sugary sweets etc when a friend offers it more often, it’s in her pocket for weeks !! She loves fruit and veg more.
Children make their own choices eventually
Let him be free , if you don’t want him to play
With toy guns etc just don’t have them at home ,
BUT beware becoming a judgemental mother it’s though on the child

Newsflash to the last 2 posters. THE OP IS A TROLL. MNHQ have confirmed it, and the OP has been made to 'walk the plank'. The thread is still up because of the fun we're having making pirate cracks.

storm11111 · 11/02/2020 14:47

Good call OP. First thing pirate party. Next thing they'll be firing cannons out their bedroom windows.

MusicalCD · 13/02/2020 10:13

I think my main point is that you need to look at the history of priacy - and yes there were those just seemed to like the violence but you are discounting the female pirates and why some people were classed as pirates. There were pirates that worked with authorities. Children can enjoy dressing up and playing games. I do feel you are maybe overthinking this.

mumsy27 · 15/02/2020 00:44

Rrrrr she goes!!!

Modern soldiers rapes too (I mean western countries soldiers)
They are the modern version of pirates.

Cjmkennedy · 21/02/2020 16:38

Get in the bin

Kablam · 22/02/2020 05:03

You are definitely being unreasonable. For fuck's sake, pirates didn't commit genocide.

Pirates often protected minority classed such as POC or LGBT people. Hell, there were even women pirates! Because they were protecting themselves!

redpencil77 · 14/02/2021 18:11

@AhoyMrBeaver

Future generations will judge us.

They won't, they'll be too busy making each other walk the plank off the coast of Derbyshire.

Os that because Derbyshire will have a coast by then through sea level rising?
RootyT00t · 14/02/2021 18:12

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet

Yarrrrrgh not being unreasonable for reporting this one - thanks, everyone.

We're shore the OP is having us on here and have made them walk the plank. We can leave this thread to stand though if you want to crack on with the pirate puns...

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
redpencil77 · 14/02/2021 18:13

I also like I still replied to this over a year after the party - pre-covid days. I wonder if he went? He could have gone as a JP or hangman, just for reality's sake

RootyT00t · 14/02/2021 18:13

Oh no it's a zombie! Whyyyy

Royalbloo · 14/02/2021 18:13

What if my daughter dressed up as little bo peep and then thinks it's acceptable to lose sheep?!!! Shocker!!!!!

Always guaranteed a laugh here 😂

@sonypony

I agree with you that it's not great. However it's standard and also small kids don't understand about what real pirates do. School is doing a pirate theme this half term in English and having a pirate dress up day. You're going to get fined if you keep them off for a half term so I think you'll have to lighten up or home educate.
Feb 2020 worrying about children being off school...if only they knew...
redpencil77 · 14/02/2021 18:17

@JacquesHammer

You could pretend you misheard and send your child as a pilot....if it works for Ruth...!
I wonder who gets this...Penzance!
katy1213 · 14/02/2021 18:18

You do realise it's a pandemic and can't you walk the plank with people outside your bubble? Don't be responsible for killing a pirate's granny! PLM!

Pity your kids 🤦

Booksandwine80 · 14/02/2021 18:24

YABU. My DD4 actually thinks that pirates say “aharr me parrrrties” not “aharr me hearrrrties”🤣🤣

And how can they have a party anyway?😳

Booksandwine80 · 14/02/2021 18:26

Oh bloody hell 🙄🙄zombie

@redpencil77 WHY did you revive this thread????

Finished Netflix

CoronaIsADick · 14/02/2021 18:32

@DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult

I think they will be more likely to play pass the parcel and musical statues than rape and murder each other. You could always clarify that with the parents though.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
