To refuse to send my child to a pirate party

A nursery friend of my 4 yo DS is having a pirate themed birthday party. I’m planning to decline the invite as I don’t think it’s appropriate for little children, or anyone for that matter, to dress up as a pirate - it’s glorifying and sentimentalising criminal men who raped, robbed and murdered.

FFS, piracy used to carry the death penalty until recently! You wouldn’t let your child go to a Nazi themed party - I can’t see much difference!

Might as well tell your child that Santa isn't real too while you are at it!!

SusieOwl4 · 08/02/2020 17:17

Very funny . You better explain that to all the authors of children’s pirate books and cartoons

yolofish · 08/02/2020 17:18

ah, I'm remembering with nostalgia the Princesses and Pirates party we had for DD1's 7th, plus the bouncy castle.

It was ace, especially when the party kids had gone and we were left with family and friends and kids, and we got the 'back to black' spray out on the steps of the bouncy castle... tbf there were quite a lot of bruises the following morning.

Why are pirates called pirates?

Because they Arrrrrr!

OP, is it just pirates you take offence to? Because there's a whole host of themes you may struggle with in the future: Ninjas, Halloween, Minions (they did some pretty messed up shit), Star Wars and early Disney is totally fucked up.

Take it in the essence that it's meant. A bit of innocent fun for kids.

Butterfly44 · 08/02/2020 17:20

Your poor child.
You'd better hide children's books too, maybe screen the school library for pirate books etc....better still take them out of school and home school so you have absolute control Hmm

TheGirlWithAPrince · 08/02/2020 17:20

@Mashbocking1 OP, how do you feel about dolphins??

MyNewBearTotoro · 08/02/2020 17:22

By this logic most things kids dress up as from outside of the last century would be wrong as rape, theft, battle etc were far more common in previous centuries. Romans, cowboys, celts, Viking’s, royalty etc. And don’t even think about dressing up as anything like a lion, tiger, bear, hippo all of whom are responsible of killing humans.

Would you let your kids dress up as kings and queens, many of whom were essentially ruling dictatorships and would have members of their realm beheaded, imprisoned etc and had their people living in poverty whilst they were living lavish lives? Knights would have gone out to kill enemies and opposing kingdoms and would have destroyed villages and communities in their path.
