Aibu- are there smokers on here? Or closet smokers like myself?

OP posts:
Tulipvase · 17/01/2020 16:40

I’ve smoked on and off for a few years. Always stopped when pregnant and stopped for years and then started again.

I haven’t smoked at all since last summer as I usually only smoked when we had friends round and I could go weeks without smoking but due to a stressful time, I found myself smoking more and more. So I gave up again.

In a way I miss it - I think because it was something for me - if that makes sense. The thought of smoking makes me feel sick though at the moment so I don’t think I’ll go back to it.

kittykatkitty · 17/01/2020 16:41

I loved smoking. I miss smoking.
Not had a cig for 3 years although if it didn't kill you and didn't cost a fortune, I would start again tomorrow.

MellowMelly · 17/01/2020 16:41

And yes to the random chainsmoking moments. My chain smoking moments normally occur when I’m stressed out.
My most favourite cigarette is after my partner has left for work in the morning. Normally after my second cup of tea and before the daily mayhem of work starts.

Number64 · 17/01/2020 16:42

I used to love smoking when I did (or at least a lot of the time I felt like I did - clearly not all the time as I gave up!) but since giving up 2 1/2 years ago I don’t miss it in the slightest. People smoking look and smell gross and you can smell someone who smokes a mile off and it’s foul - not in the earthy, smoky way I used to imagine, but in a sickly sweet chemical way that’s really nauseating. It’s really disgusting. When I think of it now I just think of tight lungs and feeling shit all the time.

ClashCityRocker · 17/01/2020 16:43

Yes, sadly.

I know it's stupid, expensive and killing me. I've watched family members die of smoking related diseases.

I feel like I can't think straight if I haven't had a cigarette at a certain time - first thing in the morning and when I get in from work. I can go through work without smoking.

I am so glad that it is declining amongst youngsters now.

Number64 · 17/01/2020 16:48

Like you OP, I used to chain smoke quite happily and like @ClashCityRocker I felt I couldn’t concentrate without one. Concentrate much better now I don’t smoke at all! Not to be an annoying ex-smoker but just - I always used to worry that I’d be deprived for life if I gave up but I don’t feel like I’m missing out in the slightest. And I really, really loved smoking when I was addicted. Grin

combatbarbie · 17/01/2020 16:52

I'm on day 17 of no smoking (but vaping so not cold turkey) after 25yrs of smoking 20 a day... No idea what's changed this time but its not bothering me half as much as previous attempts. Went for my first drink since New year which I was dreading but was surprisingly OK.

I do miss it.... I miss the first one of the day. But my sense of smell is back and I have more money left in bank! Previously I hated the smell of it, now its my trigger for cravings.

Northernsoullover · 17/01/2020 16:54

I did enjoy some cigarettes. The first one in the garden on a summer morning..

Ffsnosexallowed · 17/01/2020 16:57

I haven't smoked in 5 and a half years. 6 years ago I would have told you I enjoyed it. I enjoy being a non smoker much more.

EmmiJay · 17/01/2020 17:00

Yep smoker of 14/15 years here. Love it! Menthols are my poison. Crave them first thing in the morning, after I eat or after cleaning/washing up. Not planning to give up any time soon.

Plumpplums · 17/01/2020 17:02

Just out of interest , how much is a packet now ?

ShakeItUp · 17/01/2020 17:06

I don't smoke, I never have. My husband smokes around 20 a day and enjoys it, particularly with alcohol.
I bought him a packet yesterday when I was in the supermarket, they cost £8.75 for 20.
My father is a heavy smoker on 60 or so a day. You can barely see him sometimes with the fog. I think he must enjoy it or he wouldn't do it I assume.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 17/01/2020 17:08

Yup. I only smoke occasionally but by heck do I enjoy it.

JustGoodVibes · 17/01/2020 17:12

I very much did, then I switched to vaping which I also really enjoy, I’m now getting worried about the possible side effects of that too though. I wish I didn’t need either but it seems I do!

BamboozledandBefuddled · 17/01/2020 17:15

£8.75 for 20 is the cheap end of the market Grin I think brands like Benson & Hedges are around £11 for 20 now.

Namestranger · 17/01/2020 17:16

I love it. Therefore limit myself to one or two at the pub Friday and they stay in my bag the rest of the week!

Jayaywhynot · 17/01/2020 17:18

I gave up in September, smoked for 40 yrs, God I miss it, nothing better than having a cig, iv been miserable since giving up, still having cravings but it seems to wash over me and go. Christ knows how non smokers deal with life, a cuppa and a cig can resolve any problem. Grin

Jayaywhynot · 17/01/2020 17:21

@combatbarbie keep going, I just posted that I gave up in Sept after smoking for 40 yrs, you can do it Flowers

Newtothis6 · 17/01/2020 17:28

This thread is making me need a fag now😂 I'm sure I'm not the only one

Yes I enjoy smoking. I don't smoke full-time and usually only when I'm having a drink (which isn't often).

DH is a smoker although is in a 'quitting' period right now and I do smoke more when he is.

eminencegrise · 17/01/2020 17:31

Gd, who buys them from shops these days? I get mine from abroad.

Disquieted1 · 17/01/2020 17:31

When sat in the beer garden of the pub on a hot day with a cold beer. That's the only time I smoke nowadays and yes I do enjoy it.

squeekums · 17/01/2020 17:37

Yep, love it but not in my closet, I have too many clothes

That excuse to run off from a crowd for 5 minutes, love it
The first drag in the morning with my coffee, heavenly
Love a smoke and vodka

MadamShazam · 17/01/2020 17:38

I've always loved smoking but I do want to stop. I stopped when pregnant, and I have stopped again for nearly a year. But I always go back to the demon weed! 🙈

SummerBaby2020 · 17/01/2020 17:45

I loved smoking but when I started seeing my DP 5 and a half years ago ( no idea we would still be together now lol ) I stopped and now pregnant with my first so that’s only a good thing. I must admit, I did have the odd sneaky one when I had a drink and still loved it!
