Upset at email accusing me of being racist?

Drowningmysorroes · 16/01/2020 19:15

I live in a block of 8 flats and we all share the freehold. A couple bought one of the flats but never moved in.

We held a meeting when they bought the flat (I was still very new to the building too) and they stated they wanted to do building work to the flat.

Nothing else mentioned, no vote taken and I never heard anything since.

Two years later they sent us an email (Flat is still empty) saying building work is now commencing. The directors (without my knowledge) got a solicitor to issue them a letter to confirm the boundaries and work intended.

I’ve now come home from an awful day at work to an email calling us all racist and using bullying and harassing behaviour against them.

I met this couple almost two years ago for about 2 hours and have had no involvement with them since or their proposed building works. I could not care less if they were pink, blue or purple.

But when I have an email calling me racist I am actually very upset.

What have you supposed to have done to warrant the email?

(Or is it an email to all the residents?)

Darkstar4855 · 16/01/2020 19:32

It’s clearly based on some sort of misunderstanding that’s got nothing to do with you so I wouldn’t take it personally.

Drowningmysorroes · 16/01/2020 19:40

A misunderstanding doesn’t justify calling someone a racist.

There's clearly a bit of the story you don't know, find it out.

Scatterlit · 16/01/2020 21:46

You’re leaving out some crucial plot element — why are they claiming you’re racist?

alifelived · 16/01/2020 21:47

Ignore it.

Or reply

HOW THE FUCK AM I A RACIST? I DONT EVEN KNOW YOU.

After a hard day at work, I know what I’d do Grin

Campurp · 16/01/2020 21:47

What did you do or send to them between the letter of the works starting and today?

cologne4711 · 16/01/2020 21:51

HOW THE FUCK AM I A RACIST? I DONT EVEN KNOW YOU

I'd be tempted to say this!

If you have a problem, then take it up with the people causing the problem. Don't be lazy and have a go at everyone.

Just ignore. It's not nice but it's clearly not aimed at someone they've not seen for two years!

karencantobe · 16/01/2020 22:00

Just delete it and ignore.

spongejack · 16/01/2020 22:01

This makes zero sense, they just emailed you're a racist or what?

Whatsername177 · 16/01/2020 22:03

I would respond politely, asking for an explanation as to why they sent the email. I'd formally state that other than the meeting two years ago, you have had no further input into their plans, nor have you seen them. Putting it in writing, formally explaining you have not done anything wrong might be important if there is any dispute going forward.

saraclara · 16/01/2020 22:04

They've not called you, personally, a racist. So get over yourself. They don't know who's questioned the work so they're lashing out at everyone.

Emal back and say that you don't know what they're talking about, and can they please do their research before accusing innocent neighbours who don't have a clue what's gone on, of being racist.

Namelessinseattle · 16/01/2020 22:05

Is it because the directors sent a letter via solicitor rather than just asking them about the work and boundries? And they assume you're all in on it?

spongejack · 16/01/2020 22:06

Oh a see now it was an email to you all, ignore, delete and move on!

OutFoxxedByABadger · 16/01/2020 22:07

Unless there's a massive drip feed it just sounds like they're reacting angrily to being given boundaries.

Ignore.

skippy67 · 16/01/2020 22:08

What @saraclara said. Chill out.

bridgetreilly · 16/01/2020 22:10

Grow up.

People you don't know have sent you a letter based on something you haven't done and you're upset about what they called you? Why, when you know it has zero basis in fact and zero impact on any friendship that is important to you?

ChristmasCarcass · 16/01/2020 22:13

Ignore it. There’s obviously some fairly major information that you are missing here - either a) the part where somebody has actually been bullying and harassing them, or alternatively b) the fact they are paranoid nutjobs.

Until you know the full story, you risk putting your foot in it (either by arguing you aren’t racist if they have genuinely been on the receiving end of nasty racist bullying by other neighbours, or by making yourself a target if they are just crazy).

donquixotedelamancha · 16/01/2020 22:13

They've not called you, personally, a racist. So get over yourself.

What a bizarre response. Are you experiencing difficulty getting work done on a flat you own?

Don't worry about it OP. Some people use an accusation of racism as an immediate nuclear option in any conflict. I encountered it today and must have had it thousands of times (professionally). At least now they've made clear they are fuckwits and you all know to vote against anything else they ever want done.

Ellisandra · 16/01/2020 22:15

I don’t see why you’re taking it so personally when it’s an email to the full group.

Is it normal to have directors of an 8 flat block? Directors of what - a freehold committee? Does that even have directors? How have they reached the point of sending solicitor letters? Why didn’t you know it had been sent? Is that what this group usually do? I suspect there’s a lot more to this.

It is possible that the directors have been racist, and as they’re representing you all, the owners think you’re all sharing those racist views.

Or they could just be professionally offended or batshit 🤷🏻‍♀️

karencantobe · 16/01/2020 22:19

The reason I would delete and ignore is this is obviously nothing to do with you. But you don't know the person who sent this. You don't know if they are venting or batshit crazy. Why do you want to get into a back and forth with them by replying? You ignore and delete.

And don't give it any headspace.

Apolloanddaphne · 16/01/2020 22:29

Who are these directors? Have you seen a copy of what they sent to the flat owners? Did they say in their e mail why they think you (and the others) are being racist? It all sounds a bit weird to me. I think we need more info.

AutumnRose1 · 16/01/2020 22:30

OP
You’re going to have to tell us what they said.

I presume objections were raised for the building work?

You’ve told us half of the information.

TigerOnATrain · 16/01/2020 22:37

@Drowningmysorroes

Are you sure this isn't a fake/spam email?

Seems a bit weird to get this email 2 years later!

TheMustressMhor · 16/01/2020 22:38

There has to be a huge drip feed on the way.
