Moral dilemma

Not as dramatic as the title makes out but no idea how else to describe it.

I ordered a parcel online around christmas for a luxury candle retailing £48 for my aunt's birthday (well known brand). The candle ended up getting lost in transit so another was reordered and arrived last week. Today I have had an email to say my parcel will arrive today, it has the same tracking number as my original order, so I'm guessing the delivery company found the original parcel and are now delivering it today.

This is something I would love for myself, so much so that I almost bought a second for myself but realised I can't justify spending that sort of money on myself. I already know I can't handle the guilt and will be phoning the company to let them know the original order has arrived (though secretly really hoping they'll let me keep it!). DH, DM and friends I have spoken to think I'm crazy to tell them and told me to keep it! Don't think my conscience will allow it, I'm such a goody two shoes that I'm even convinced the police will be knocking on my door if I did Confused

I guess what I'm asking is what would you do?

Keep it.

MonstranceClock · 15/01/2020 09:28

Keep it! Why wouldn’t you?

BlackWhitePurple · 15/01/2020 09:30

Contact them and offer to send it back. They may say keep it, hey may not, but either way your conscience is clear!

pooopypants · 15/01/2020 09:35

Firstly wait and see if two candles are actually delivered. You're mentally beating yourself up about a scenario that hasn't even happened

Queenofheartsnomore · 15/01/2020 09:38

Keep it.

Footballerswife · 15/01/2020 09:39

They will probably tell you to keep it anyway. This has happened to me a couple of times, once with a very expensive pair of trainers

Dontdisturbmenow · 15/01/2020 09:40

Well what you plan on doing, why are you asking? Keeping would be stealing end of. You might be rewarded for your honesty or you might not. It's not for you to decide whether you should.

For info, I received a parcel from Amazon last week, with my name on it, but stuff that I hadn't ordered. It didn't show on my account either. I called them to ask about returning it and they told me not to bother, that I could keep it, put in the trash or give it to charity. It's nothing I really care for, so will do the latter but I would otherwise have kept it knowing that I did the right thing.

StylishMummy · 15/01/2020 09:40

Keep it - they'll have already accounted for the loss and reclaimed the cost from the delivery company. You can guarantee Jo Malone won't refund the courier company!

Disfordarkchocolate · 15/01/2020 09:41

I couldn't keep it, contact them and ask them what they want you to do with it.

Dontdisturbmenow · 15/01/2020 09:42

Keep it! Why wouldn’t you?
Do some people genuinely wonder why they said shouldn't keep something that they haven't paid for just because someone else made a mistake?

No kidding fraud levels are so high when people manage to convince themselves that this behaviour is acceptable.

Hahaha88 · 15/01/2020 09:46

I'd keep it

AdoreTheBeach · 15/01/2020 09:47

Call the company when the parcel has arrived (and check it is what went missing). If they want it back, they can send a courier to collect. If not, they’ll say kept it. But the decision really is on the company. Morally you’re right in doing that.

Far too many people think it’s ok to take what you’ve not paid for when ordering on line. You’ve gotten the candle you paid for. This second is not paid for. Somehow not going into a physical shop seems to have eroded basic morality. At the end of this, there has been a cost of this second candle and it is coming out of their profits.

yogo · 15/01/2020 09:48

Keep it. I think 90% of people would and I'm firmly with them

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 15/01/2020 09:48

Keep it.

Damntheman · 15/01/2020 09:49

I'd contact the company. Chances are they'll just tell you to keep it anyway, but I couldn't live with the guilt of not telling them.

mummykauli7 · 15/01/2020 09:53

I would send it back. Or offer to pay for it and keep it. I had something similar happen to me (I ordered 4 Dyson vacuums and they delivered 5) I called immediately and asked them to come and collect it.

This kind of stuff wouldn't sit right with me.

PurpleFrames · 15/01/2020 09:53

This happened to me recently. I contacted the company after the 2nd parcel arrived. They said due to my honesty and their error I could keep both.

joystir59 · 15/01/2020 09:56

Keep it.

Medievalist · 15/01/2020 09:57

If it does turn out to be the original order, I'd contact the company and let them know what has happened. But I wouldn't offer to post it back. I'd ask if they want to arrange for it to be collected.

BillHadersNewWife · 15/01/2020 09:58

I had this once. Got a lovely train set from Amazon which did't arrive. Complained, they sent a new one and then the lost one arrived.

I dealt with my guilt by giving it to my friend's son!

Sadiee88 · 15/01/2020 09:58

Keep it

KatherineJaneway · 15/01/2020 10:01

Let them know about the delivery, they will likely let you keep it.

Abraid2 · 15/01/2020 10:01

I'd tell them to send a courier. Because it's not yours.

Drbrowns · 15/01/2020 10:02

Keep it.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 15/01/2020 10:03

keep it! Usually returning these things is more faff than the item is worth
