Are we making the right decision, moving house?

We currently live in the area I grew up in which had about 17,000 people living in it. It’s a “bad” area and the school is bottom in our county. Growing up here I know what it’s like and I dislike it so we do want to move and have been looking for 1 year.

I’m currently a SAHM and OH works from home or travels abroad.

We had decided on 2 areas.

Area 1 - 4 miles away (so still not a great area) but it’s better than the one we are in. Has decent schools and a train station and has easy links into the city centre. 2 close family members live here and others are 5 minute drive away. Houses rarely come up and we’ve had none that we’re interested in for 1 year.

Area 2 - 12 miles away. Outstanding school and a small village of 7,000 people. Lots of local shops and cafes. Several new builds building in the area which we really like the look of. No family in immediate area. Nearest train station is 6 miles away. 25 minute drive for family to visit although we would have a spare bedroom to sleep over.

We are very nearly buying a house in area 2 but then have a wobble and think “am I making a mistake?” I hate living where I grew up and in a way would love a fresh start which area 2 would give us. We had a friend that has already moved there so do know 1 person in the area.

What do you think?

Area 2

Area 2. Twenty five minutes' drive is still pretty close to your family.

25 minutes is nothing. It feels like a bigger move than it is because you have always lived in the same area.

CoisFarraige · 06/01/2020 15:02

Area 2 - nicer area, good schools, house you like - new estates so lots of new people open to making friends, similar ages etc. 25 mins is not far at all and 7000 is not a small village by my standards - sounds great!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 06/01/2020 15:04

Area 2.
We recently moved within 2-3hrs of family and think it's great that they are 'local' now. 25mins is round the corner. People drive further to school or supermarket without thinking about it!

Butterfly02 · 06/01/2020 15:09

Area 2.

Dizzygirl00 · 06/01/2020 15:13

Area 2. Go for it 😊

Louloulovesyou · 06/01/2020 15:24

Area 2, if it's a nice area some of your family might relocate to join you at some point. And in the meantime 25mins is nothing....

Sushiroller · 06/01/2020 15:26

Area 2

SebandAlice · 06/01/2020 15:26

Area 2 without a doubt.

user1493413286 · 06/01/2020 15:27

Area 2; your family are still really close

Ugzbugz · 06/01/2020 15:28

25 mins is nothing if you can all drive, so think area 2.

Useful22 · 06/01/2020 15:29

Area 2. 25 mins is really not far enough to stay over!!!!

Bouncebacker · 06/01/2020 15:29

Area 2 sounds great! Anywhere within an hour of family I would class as ‘close’. But also, in the right new place, you will find like minded people and they become your support network as well.

Hustssleeping · 06/01/2020 15:29

Area 2. You've got the wobbles because you know the area you're in so well.
25mins is not a long drive- no one would need to stay over! But spare room is useful anyway.
Go for it! It sounds like you really like the area. You've nothing to lose.

mumwon · 06/01/2020 15:31

only 2 queries
do you drive (if yes - 2)
is there a secondary school or one nearby is there a school bus?
are there buses to nearest town

Expressedways · 06/01/2020 15:31

Area 2. 25 minutes from family sounds ideal- close enough to see them whenever you like but not so close that you get unexpected visits. Also it sounds lovely!

mumwon · 06/01/2020 15:31

doh? 3 questions! to think about

Movinghouseatlast · 06/01/2020 15:32

Area 2. I can tell you like it better by the way you write about it.

25 minutes drive really is very local still.

TheTrollFairy · 06/01/2020 15:34

Area 2. 25 minutes isn’t too far away, I drive over that to see my sibling.
Outstanding school is worth it I think

Skinnyrib · 06/01/2020 15:34

Area 2 sounds lovely.

shortytrekker · 06/01/2020 15:38

I drive 25 mins to go to town! Definitely chose that one.
