Are we making the right decision, moving house?

We currently live in the area I grew up in which had about 17,000 people living in it. It’s a “bad” area and the school is bottom in our county. Growing up here I know what it’s like and I dislike it so we do want to move and have been looking for 1 year.

I’m currently a SAHM and OH works from home or travels abroad.

We had decided on 2 areas.

Area 1 - 4 miles away (so still not a great area) but it’s better than the one we are in. Has decent schools and a train station and has easy links into the city centre. 2 close family members live here and others are 5 minute drive away. Houses rarely come up and we’ve had none that we’re interested in for 1 year.

Area 2 - 12 miles away. Outstanding school and a small village of 7,000 people. Lots of local shops and cafes. Several new builds building in the area which we really like the look of. No family in immediate area. Nearest train station is 6 miles away. 25 minute drive for family to visit although we would have a spare bedroom to sleep over.

We are very nearly buying a house in area 2 but then have a wobble and think “am I making a mistake?” I hate living where I grew up and in a way would love a fresh start which area 2 would give us. We had a friend that has already moved there so do know 1 person in the area.

What do you think?

Area 2, sounds lovely.
I currently live 3 hours from nearest family member so 20 mins would be very very close to me!

Area 2. 25 minutes is sod all! That's on the doorstep! My nearest family member is a good 3 hours away and we still see them fairly often and just for the day.

Elbeagle · 06/01/2020 19:37

I would class area 2 as being in the ‘immediate area’ of close family! Surely people would still offer to babysit for nights out from 25 mins away? Our nearest supermarket is 25 mins away Grin.
Anyway... area 2. Sounds by far the best option.

BlueSuffragette · 06/01/2020 19:55

Yes agree with area 2 being the better option.
Best of luck x Flowers

Thanks all.

It’s strange but I actually feel nervous telling them. They are a bit full on and although I had said we were moving I didn’t really say exactly where to. When my sister found out we were looking at houses in this village she went mad and said I was hiding things from her as I didn’t tell her & im strange for being so secretive! At this point however we were just browsing.

So yeah feel a bit nervous but think the distance will do me good.

Area 2. Your family have no business getting angry with you for moving a whopping 25 mins drive away ffs Confused.

My family are a minimum 3 hour drive away. The rest are overseas. My sil moved to Australia a few years ago and her family got over it because they see how happy she is there.

Good luck Flowers.

Area 2

ferntwist · 06/01/2020 20:20

Area 2, most definitely!

lisag1969 · 06/01/2020 20:27

Area 2 definitely 100%. No question. X

ChristmasSweet · 06/01/2020 20:41

Jesus if they can't be assed to drive 25 mins they aren't great family. Pick area 2 it's much better for your family. Put their needs first, not some people who will only visit now and again.

Cheeringmeup · 06/01/2020 20:56

I think area 2 is the best option too. As others have said, 25 minutes is still pretty close, but not so close that they can pop in unannounced too often!
You don’t like living where you grew up (maybe you have some unpleasant memories from that time?), so absolutely move away to somewhere you’ll be happier and can give your family a nicer life.
Courage in both hands - just tell them x
