So, similar to a fellow mumsnetter, I too am laid up in bed, I have an infection post partum so feeling a bit rubbish and would really love to hear about the spookiest unexplained things that have happened to you.
I’m always fascinated by this especially from people who are skeptics and something has genuinely taken them aback.

I’ll start...just moved in to our new (to us) house (about 100 years old) and DS was about 6 weeks old. Middle of the night and I was changing him in the spare room on a changing table. Heard a voice ask if I was alright. I’d left DH deep asleep in our room and although it didn’t sound like his voice I assumed it was him and answered ‘yes fine’. Returned seconds later expecting him to be awake but he was still asleep.
A few weeks later, my mum mentioned while our shopping that she thought our house was a bit spooky. And when I asked why, she said that while she was trying to get to sleep in the other spare room she heard a voice gently ask her if she was alright. She said she just hid under the duvet!
Freaked me out but has never happened again...

Staying at a relative’s house with my toddler, we were sharing a bed. Some time in the night toddler woke me up laughing. “Mummy, look! Is man! Is man!” And then, waving at the empty doorway to our room: “Hello, man! Hello! Mummy is MAN!”

No man that I could see in the doorway and indeed no man in the entire house.

I don’t think it was a ghost really. I told myself at the time it was one of those waking dreams that feel really vivid. But bloody hell it was creepy!

LolaDarkdestroyer · 02/01/2020 22:15

In hospital after having dd3 c section, middle of the night she had woken up I sat up and there was this midwife stood there giving me a bollocking telling me to see to my baby with a really stern look on her face, did notice she was wearing a different coloured uniform to the normal staff but thought nothing of it, I picked my dd up and she went.
Anyway the next day I mentioned to another midwife about her having a go at me and described her and they didn't have a clue who I was talking about! And that none of them wear a navy uniform! They even agreed with me that it was very strange and I never saw her again after that.

NotAgainEar · 02/01/2020 22:15

@BigFatMamaJam aww your poor 12 yo cousin. I'd probably have wet myself too (even as an adult) Grin wonder if the buyers are having as much fun...

Hearthside · 02/01/2020 22:20

My house is Victorian and haunted , my DC has seen our ghost a number of times.I am a firm believer. I have been in places and given names that i have absolutely no way of knowing and have been right .I can sense when a spirit is around .Likewise i can walk in a room and tell outright if it has a bad feeling. I fully understand that not everyone believes .I have seen a ghost and it did at the time make me look twice and my DH has also seen our ghost .They don't bother us we bump along together.

BigFatMamaJam · 02/01/2020 22:23

@NotAgainEar

This was all 30 odd years ago but funnily enough the house has changed hands many many times! My grandma keeps an eye on rightmove to look for it as it always appears every few months! After the original family sold it the new buyer spent a fortune on renovating it. After a year he sold it again for well under what it was worth. A wealthy family bought it (we heard this from locals in the village!) and they lasted 8 months. The kids who were previously model children started with behavioural worries and the parents said they had to move to change schools. After that it was empty for two years and then bought again. This owner didn’t even move in. Just kept hold of it for a year and then sold it again, again for less than it was worth. It was empty again for another year and has just been bought. It was originally up for 1.6m. Then went down to £1.3m and finally sold for £950k. We’ll see how long these poor sods last!

NotAgainEar · 02/01/2020 22:46

@BigFatMamaJam your grandma did exactly what I would have done - rightmove alerts! To lose £650k is painful but better than losing your sanity. Reminds me of those kids stories of people being offered a house for free if they make it through one night. Scariest post so far

Elieza · 02/01/2020 22:49

Well that’s us not going to be sleeping well tonight then ha ha!

Freaky stories.

I’ve got one. A relative used to always stand at the window watching the world go by while wearing his uniform. It was his thing.
He died.
The house was rented out and the person who rented it phones to ask who the old man in the uniform by the window was, as she could see him through the frosted glass living room door but when she opened it nobody was there. Nobody told her about him or his uniform or his window watching. So she genuinely must have see him. She wasnt afraid as she had seen things before, just curious. She continued to rent the house until her lease was up and the next person who rented it said they heard footsteps across the floor at night. But nobody was there.

I wonder if he is still there.

Sleepycat91 · 02/01/2020 22:52

My family seem to be quite sensitive to things, my sister 'see's' more than us.

My friend lived in an old house that used to be a shop i think. We were sat on MSN (Those were the days) using the webcam which showed the door behind us. Both of us saw a girl in an old style dress walk past the room, there was no one else in the house.

Im convinced i had something follow me from house to house for a while, my stuff used to disappear in my room at my mums and when id ask for it back, it would re appear the same day in a place id looked already 10 times. Me and my oh then moved to a flat in a converted victorian build and what was the loft was our bedroom. I couldn't use the hairdryer with my back to the door, i had to sit with my back against the wall so i could see out the door. We had a bearded dragon and i was sat on the floor feeding him with the flimsy box of crickets on my left, my oh walked past me and i looked down and the box was gone. I found it 3ft away under the table, if hed kicked that, the tub would of exploded and there would of been crickets everywhere plus it would of made a racket. I was home alone on my day off and spent HOURS looking for the remote control, gave up and sat on the laptop for a bit instead, went to go pick my oh from work, came in the door and the remote was EXACTLY where id been sitting for 2 hours! Things kept going missing until i asked for them back aswell same as my mums house which has a lot of a activity aswell but post is long enough already🙈

Moved again and only thing that happened there was i had a TY that looked like an old style teddy, i came home and he was face down a good distance away from the bookshelf hed been sat on, the only way it would of got there was if youd put your hand behind him and shoved it off. No one was home and had no pets at the time that could of been the culprit.

Have loads of others but im droning on as it is aha!

Sleepycat91 · 02/01/2020 22:55

Oh i also saw my other halfs cat too! She died a few years before we started going out and i was stood downstairs on my own waiting for him and i saw a black cat dart behind the sofa and i was watching the plant move where it brushed past. I told him a few years later worried hed think i waz bonkers and he said she used to sleep behind the sofa!

TopEndChops · 02/01/2020 23:38

What was the disco.one mentioned up thread along with Savernake? Have seen Savernake but don't recall ever seeing a story about a disco ghost.

Trentmum · 03/01/2020 00:06

My sister died of cancer in 2012. I was naturally heartbroken. She’d never had much spare money, and my DH and I had supported her financially for years. A few weeks after she died, I opened my purse. It’s a zipped purse which I barely use- I tend to throw change into my handbag and root around for coins when I need them. So when I opened my purse, the biggest white feather was in there. So weird. Why was a feather in a zipped purse which is kept inside a handbag? I phoned my younger sister to tell her and she said ‘bloody hell, has she had her hands in your purse again’?? Made us laugh as we both adored her and were missing her terribly. I definitely felt she’d put it there to comfort me.

SpookedmyselfRemembering · 03/01/2020 00:20

Ive namechanged for this and never told anyone this before. Im almost worried writing it down will somehow bring them back Blush

I was pregnant with my first baby and had gone for a nap, it was during the day so the room was still light. I woke up in a shock and above me was a group of shadows on the ceiling, as i woke up they dispersed into about 30 different shadows, flying all over the walls until they managed to get out under my bedroom door. I was scared. Ever since then i have been scared of the dark, sounds daft but i feel watched

hiphiphoorayback · 03/01/2020 00:34

@PriscillaTheHun scary stuff just watched dracula aswell! Wink

I stayed in a cottage one summer and for some ridiculous reason I decided to go a day early as my DH was still working. We arrived late in the evening expecting to find the holiday house easily erm not at all. It was down a long track in the middle of a bloody wood. It was pitch black and I was having to fumble around in the forest looking for a keysafe outside the house with twigs snapping and other noises all around and my DD crying as she was scared! Eventually I found the keysafe yah - but it was open and there was no key in there and it hadn't dropped out. I panicked thinking someone had got there before me and could be in the house already! Grin

I sped off in the car and called the holiday company and their out of hours help, had to drive an hour and half round trip to let us in. By this point I had conjured up all manner of sinister things that could happen to us alone in the woods. I didn't want the maintenance guy to leave. We couldn't find the key and other keys were missing! ConfusedAnyway for some reason I let him go and decided to stay the night. I checked the whole house to make sure no one was inside and then I barricaded every door so even if someone had a key they couldn't enter. Luckily I had a bottle of wine and I spent about 4 hours on the phone to DH and stayed awake until it was sunrise. The problem was that should I need to escape I had no idea where I was as I had arrived at night and it was pitch black and the outside lightbulbs weren't working so I think this heightened my cabin fever. As we were in the forest the rummaging, rattling and human like wailing went on all night. Literally things like nails dragging down the front door and tapping on windows. Confused I will never forget it - probably just deer etc but my god was I scared.

When I could see my surrounding in the morning it didn't help as it did look bloody eerie and scary and I never settled for the whole week. I couldn't wait to get the fuck out of there, it felt odd there, and just had unwelcoming dank feel even though it was a hot summer.

I never book anywhere secluded on holiday now and like to be in the thick of things.

stouffer · 03/01/2020 01:08

Our old boiler used to turn itself off at random. Me and DW hadn’t touched it and the kids knew better than to mess with it. Thing is it had a very tactile lever type switch that you had to move to turn it off - it wasn’t just a button that could short out. The boiler was bordering on dangerous because of the age of it (now replaced btw) and I’ve always wondered if something was trying to protect us.

Both DW and I have had multiple experiences of seeing things in our house. We’re both rational people but the number of instances is high. One night I got up to go to the toilet and when I walked back into our bedroom I distinctly saw the figure of a little girl coming out of the room. At first I thought it was our youngest DD as the girl was about the same size and had the same colour hair but what really stuck out for me was I clearly saw an old style knee length nightdress with some kind of frill or detailing at the bottom of it.

We know for certain that the last owner of the house died in the back bedroom and the house is at least 300 years old so chances are he wasn’t the only person who has passed away here. The house doesn’t have a threatening atmosphere at all but definitely has some kind of resonance going on.

IceBearRocks · 03/01/2020 01:29

Ds has pneumonia and developed sepsis.....in PICU for a few weeks.
He was improving but got a bout of severe diarrhoea. Was put into a room .....had terrible transition as DS heart rate kept decreasing despite he great improvements.
Once settled into the room the nurse desperate for toilet left ..... and i stoood by DS bed with window behind me and looked to my right to find a 5-6 year old boy in brown cords and a stripped t shirt stood next to me .....looked again and he was gone. I just felt shit about the room.
Spoke to 3 regular PICU nurses who confirmed the boy died in that room and the circumstances around it !!
2 parents left without their children in our 2 week stay .....we nearly lost out boy twice...I'm hoping our little lad was watching over mine x

FenellaVelour · 03/01/2020 01:39

Im awake and need a wee and I’m too scared to get out of bed and go to the bathroom now 😂

LouH1981 · 03/01/2020 05:49

@Laiste Thats really interesting because you would hardly expect to see something spooky in a field, it’s not like an old house where your mind might play tricks. Good that your partner saw them too!

@Burlea Aww, she must be very friendly if your Grandson wants to cuddle her. I love that she gives her opinion on any improvements!

LouH1981 · 03/01/2020 06:04

@53rdWay It makes you wonder though! Did your relative know anything about it?

LouH1981 · 03/01/2020 06:08

@BigFatMamaJam There is obviously still something going on in there then. Those poor kids too (and your cousin!)

I had a nightmare at 3am and can't get back to sleep, so obviously thought this was a good thread to read in bed. DH is fast asleep, he just moved his foot and i nearly wet myself so thanks for that.

LouH1981 · 03/01/2020 08:15

@ @NarwhalsNarwhals Oh no! I’m so sorry! Think Disney thoughts, think Disney thoughts...🙈

@IceBearRocks Christ! As if you weren’t terrified enough with what was going on with your son. I’m pleased he is ok now, what a terrible time for you.
I think children ghost stories are really sad 😞 Wandering around all alone especially in a hospital 🙁

I grew up in my Grandparents house which was haunted and previously owned by a priest.

My Gramps would get tapped on the shoulder, feel breathing on his neck at night even though my Nan would be facing the other way.

All of their children saw stuff growing up, somebody sat in the rocking chair then the chair rocking randomly with nobody about.

As a child I would feel somebody sitting on the end of my bed at night etc, a certain picture of my cousin and I on the wall would never stay there, would always be on the floor the next morning, upright leaning against the wall but any other picture out there would stay.

None of my friends really believed it until my friend stayed after a night out when we were 18, we had both just gone to sleep when my chest of drawers were shaking so bad the drawers were banging in and out of them. She refused to ever stay again.

My DH (was boyfriend at the time) and woke up one night and said "(my name) are you okay?" I was fast asleep but it woke me, I said "yeah why do you ask? I was asleep" and he jumped out of bed and turned the light on as he had woken up to see a girl with long brown hair (same as me) stood in the corner of the room and thought it was me until he realised I was laying in bed next to him.

My Nan and Grandad were used to it and it just became the normal after 30+ years of living there. My Grandad passed away and I'd moved out, my Nan called me at 1am saying she was watching TV in the living room and could hear somebody stomping up and down the hallway and the bedroom doors opening and slamming she was petrified, I went to pick her up and she was so scared that she sold the house which broke her heart as they had so many memories there and had turned it from a 2 bedroom bungalow to a 5 bedroom, raised their children there and grandchildren etc.

Now my Nan has passed away too and I often drive past it and wonder if the owners now experience what we all did.

stouffer · 03/01/2020 09:25

Another one from our house. I was on my own one night (the family was away somewhere) and I could hear a chair moving in our dining room downstairs. This made a very distinctive sound of wood scraping over tiles and there’s nothing else in the house that sounds like it. I thought the dog was messing around with something under the table so I sneaked down to catch her in the act....to find her fast asleep in her bed on the other side of the room. The chairs were where they should have been and nothing else had been moved.

DW and I have also both seen a girl standing in DD’s shared bedroom, usually in broad daylight and as a glimpse while coming up the stairs. What is striking about that when it happens is that we would expect to see one of our DDs in there but it always happens when they are out at school or whatever. It’s almost like there are snapshots of the past all over the house. DDs room is huge in comparison to most bedrooms which is why they share; we know that our house had evacuees during the war so it’s likely that this was where they would have all slept.
