So, similar to a fellow mumsnetter, I too am laid up in bed, I have an infection post partum so feeling a bit rubbish and would really love to hear about the spookiest unexplained things that have happened to you.
I’m always fascinated by this especially from people who are skeptics and something has genuinely taken them aback.

I’ll start...just moved in to our new (to us) house (about 100 years old) and DS was about 6 weeks old. Middle of the night and I was changing him in the spare room on a changing table. Heard a voice ask if I was alright. I’d left DH deep asleep in our room and although it didn’t sound like his voice I assumed it was him and answered ‘yes fine’. Returned seconds later expecting him to be awake but he was still asleep.
A few weeks later, my mum mentioned while our shopping that she thought our house was a bit spooky. And when I asked why, she said that while she was trying to get to sleep in the other spare room she heard a voice gently ask her if she was alright. She said she just hid under the duvet!
Freaked me out but has never happened again...

I lost my mother as a teenager and was talking to a woman at work who lost her mother recently. We were talking about white feathers and whether we thought they were messages from lost loved ones. At the end of the conversation, she said 'well, I must get back to work', she took the lid off her pen and there was a White feather inside the pen lid! We were in disbelief!!! No one can believe it happened but it most certainly did !

@LouH1981 that's how i think if her now just a lovely old lady. If i am in a certain room i freeze and feel so scared to turn around incase she's stood there. This weird feeling just comes over me like she's behind me so i say Mrs J don't get scaring me now please and i talk to her/myself until I've calmed down 😂

We lived in a flat in a very hot country, at night we went to bed with just a sheet, a blanket folded at the bottom of the bed. During the night I was aware of OH getting up, going to the loo then pulling the blanket up to my shoulders as it was now chilly.

A couple of years later, in a different flat, we were talking about stuff with friends and I recalled this. OH was shocked, 'But that's what you did, not me!'
Years later still we were on another posting and met a couple who had lived in our flat before us, the first thing she said was 'Did you get tucked in at night?' They had had exactly the same experience, each thought the other responsible.

My DH died at the age of 28. It was devastating and I really struggled to cope.
A few years later I took a promotion at work to move to a city I had never lived in sight unseen. Gradually I came back to life and found myself falling in love with a colleague.
He proposed and we were relocating to another city to set up house together. I still had a lot of things from my married life in my flat and was struggling-there really wasn't room to bring all of my stuff and I felt so conflicted-there was one particular print that DH and I had had in our kitchen which didn't go in my new home and I really didn't want to take but I felt disloyal to leave it.
I was sound asleep in my flat at around 4:00am and I awoke to a huge crash. I ran in to living room-turned on the lights and the picture in question had fallen off the wall where it had hung for years and was smashed on the floor...

ChanandelerBong · 03/01/2020 20:37

Ive posted this exact post before under a different name...

I always used to think that I would believe it if I experienced anything, but never really believing that I would...
Until I started work at the school I am currently Head Teacher at. I'm here alone a lot. Next to my office are the shutters for the canteen, which occasionally will rattle a little if there's a strong wind. But recently they've started banging like someone is battering their fists against them. I've also heard laughter - child's and adult's. I've seen someone walk past the kitchen window when there was nobody there, I've seen someone walk past a small window in an internal door when the only people in the building were with me in that room. There have been things appear on a table that people were looking for when they categorically weren't there a minute before and no one else could have put them there. A few weeks ago, I opened a door to leave a classroom and what I thought was a child or a stooping adult ducked under my arm and pushed past me as I held the door open. I turned round to berate whoever it was for being impatient, and there was no one there.

I never feel uncomfortable here, never afraid, there's a really happy feeling in this building. I'm just not a fan of being here alone any more! And being called out at three in the morning when the alarm goes off to a rural school with no external lighting... Well that's just a joy!

When I was staying in a hotel in Bratislava it was the middle of the night and something woke me up, when I opened my eyes there was a white front gyre standing by the bed then it just disappeared into the ceiling.

I wasn't scared at all and felt so calm as I knew it didn't want to hurt me.

Nymerialuna · 03/01/2020 21:18

Oooh I have a few!

The first is when I worked in an old pub that used to be town courthouse way back when. I would often hear footsteps in the back hallway but when I would look, there would be no one there (there were no other doors to go through except the back door which creaked really loudly), I would often see a figure walk past in the mirror (in an empty pub) and there was one particular place at the bar and without fail, everyone who stood there would feel a sharp tug on their shirt, even if they were the only person in there. Even DH, who is very sceptic, felt it.

The next one:
We had a day out with about 10 of us (all adults) to Beaulieu Motor Museum on a gorgeous sunny day. We visited the abbey ruins and whilst the rest of the place was really hot, there was just one spot where it was literally freezing, goosebumps, shivering the lot. But it was just one very specific spot, it was like standing directly under an air con unit. There was no breeze coming through, not that it would have made a difference as it was such a hot day. We then went into the church ruins but DH refused to step foot in there. I walked in and started looking around and suddenly got the most awful feeling of anxiety and foreboding. It was like a severe panic attack, I couldnt breath, I felt sick and it felt like someone was pushing the back of my neck really hard. I just KNEW I had to get out immediately. I practically ran out, almost crying with fear. I was in there two minutes tops. When the rest of the family came out, several of them said they got a feeling that something awful was going to happen and one of our group, who is the most relaxed, chilled out guy I have ever met, came out absolutely white and shaking like crazy.
There is deffinitely someone not nice in there.

A much sadder experience.
We very suddenly lost my young nephew to meningitis a few years ago.
A few weeks after we lost him I was looking after my 2 year old niece (his sister) and she suddenly stopped playing with her toys and turned around and started having a conversation. It wasn't her usual 2 year old babble, she was literally having a conversation, with pauses, answers and little giggles. I then heard her say my nephews name several times in her side on the conversation.
After a few minutes, she then said "bye [nephews name], love you" (in her toddle talk) and turned around and continued playing with her toys. I firmly believe he had come to visit us and she was talking to him.
I did find it incredibly hard not to burst into uncontrolable tears.

ManonBlackbeak · 03/01/2020 21:21

I love the story about the little white dog! How sweet. I'd have to give him a name!

Speaking of dogs, I saw my parents old dog lots of times in the months after he died. He was a bushy cross breed with a very distinctive tail (we used to joke it looked like a fan) and it was always the tail I saw out of the corner of my eye.

I also saw my Grandmother on the morning after she died. I was sitting in the living room and felt a tingling, sort of static electricity kind of feeling. Looked up and very briefly saw my DGM looking at me through the window, she looked about 20 plus years younger than she was when she died. We lived near her and when I was little she'd often pop in to see us on her way to the shops, and she'd look through the window to see if we were in first. I like to think she was popping in to see us one last time.

Animum2 · 03/01/2020 21:40

Dh seems to have a sensor for all things ghostly, he grew up in a house that had a ghost that used to visit, another place he lived in had two ghosts that he noticed a lot and his own father comes to our place on occasions, dh can smell his aftershave

The only ghostly experience I've had is at dh sisters house which is known for ghostly appearances, I was on my own in the guest bedroom and what can only be described as a misty grey vision appeared from the bathroom and moved across the room to the door and disappeared

When my cat died, dh saw her the next day and I also saw her face appear a few days after that

Tddnamechanger · 03/01/2020 21:52

I have one that I have never been able to explain.

Around 20 years ago my sister moved into her first house as a single young mother. Almost immediately she began to report things happening in her house. Switches being turned on and off and a child laughing, doors slamming etc. Over 3 years there were many stories but despite me spending an awful lot of time there including sleeping over weekly, I never experienced anything and believed that my sister was feeling unsettled in her house and was letting her imagination run wild.

My sister told me she was getting a medium over and asked me to be there. This lady came and told my sister about a child and the whole story behind why they were there. I got very annoyed and gave the medium a piece of my mind telling them that they were feeding my sisters insecurities etc.

Anyway fast forward a few years and my sister had moved house. This was in the days of the old VHS tapes and I had decided to look through old tapes reminiscing. There was one of my nephews 2nd birthday when just our immediate family (me,sis, mum, dad and nephew) were there blowing out the candles. In the doorway there is very clearly a child that appears briefly, stands just behind my dad and then retreats.

There was no other children in the house and no family members had children. Could a child have wandered in off the street through the closed front door without any of us noticing?

ISawNessie · 03/01/2020 21:58

I’ve seen a monk.
When we used to drive to see my grandparents (over 4 hours away) and along the way we went through a couple of villages (now there is a by pass). Just outside one of these villages is an old manor - open to the public. We had never been to visit or heard anything about it.
I think I was about 9 or 10we were driving past I happened to be looking out my window & saw right outside the main gates a monk with its hood up, holding a book. I thought I was seeing things until my dad (who was sitting in the passengers seat in front of me) said what on earth is that & described what I’d just seen to my mum.
We stopped by a couple of years later to visit(!) and found out it was one of the most haunted places in the county. Apparently we were not the only ones who had seen a monk.....

A few days after my father passed away, a ceramic plate on the table just split in two.

It may have been in the microwave earlier but I think it was my dad sending us a signal.

ISawNessie · 03/01/2020 22:14

Also I felt the presence of someone- I’m pretty sure it was the old lady we bought our house off. She was lovely.
We’d been in the house just under 2 years and DC arrived. One morning he was lying in his Moses basket in the living room, just me & him in the house. I went into the kitchen to get a drink & when I came back to check on him I could smell this perfume it was mainly around the basket. It was like someone was in the room.
The next day I bumped into my neighbour who told me that the lady who used to live in our house had sadly died two days before.
I swear the perfume I smelt was her & she’d come back to see the house & look at the baby. It’s not happened again.

My lovely grandfather died a couple of years ago. He was very much a man of his generation - a rigid moral compass from his police days but wary of foreigners and disapproving of lgbt, etc.

Not long after he passed, I dreamt about him. I don't remember anything apart from him saying something like "I know now that none of that matters, love. Skin colour, gayness, weirdies... it's not important."

It was such a striking thing to hear from him, in his voice.

LittleMissV989 · 03/01/2020 22:27

My dad died very suddenly 7 years ago, I had never been a believer really but about a week after his passing I was in bed the next morning my mum came in asking me if I had turned the radio on downstairs. It was ridiculously loud I obviously hadn't as I was half asleep. We both believe it was my dad as the radio has never turned it self on before he died. Every time I spoke about him to my friends or family something would happen around me for example lights flickering. I can remember been in Revolution bar with my girls and I got into such a deep conversation about my dad I could start to feel the energy around me change as I was telling them all about him then all of a sudden an alarm started blaring so loud throughout the club. Everyone looked puzzled there was no fire no reason at all for it to go off but it was loud It lasted 5 seconds and then stopped. I smiled to my self and my friends just sat there stunned. I am 100% certain it was my dad as things like that happened all the time. It comforts me and I know my dad is always with me Smile.

I've got many stories having lived in a flat that was haunted after the people upstairs had a party and brought out an ouija board which unleashed all kinds of hell (I'm not kidding). We then moved into my great grandparents vacant house which was haunted to the eyeballs however despite many odd things happening with the exception of one event one night which absolutely terrified me, I was fine living there - all the ghosts had been there for 60+ years and never did anything bad. I even saw the same ghost monk my Gran saw 50 years earlier.

So. Partner and I move in to our new home that we bought off a young couple. The delivery van has just left and the house is in chaos of removal boxes everywhere.

I desperately needed a wee so dashed to the bathroom and didn't bother closing the door. The bathroom looks out to the landing, to the right is a bedroom and in the ceiling is a loft hatch (no ladder). Mid-wee a mid-50's man who was very overweight suddenly materialised in the bathroom door, as if he'd came down from a ladder. He didn't look at me and just walked past the door and down the stairs. I froze, i actually said outloud "Oh fuck, I knew what I was dealing with at the old house but who are you?!".

Nothing happened for a few days until one day I met an elderly neighbour. She asked how previous owners were and then out of the blue, started talking about the owners before them. I froze again as she went on to tell me the man was "Huge, he was like an egg on legs" and how he'd gone to work one day and had a heart attack and was found several hours later. He was a model train enthusiast and had a huge set-up in the loft which he'd clamber up using a ladder.

We've never seen him since so I think he was just checking us out whilst also checking himself out.

@Tunnocks34 I agree with your sister, definitely sounds like sleep paralysis. I used to get that and most often when I was just drifting back in to sleep. I found it hard to determine when I was awake and when I was asleep. I wouldn’t experience a demon but would hear the front door open, hear someone come up the stairs and the bedroom door would fly open. Then I’d wake up.
That must have been absolutely terrifying especially to involve your baby too.

Never seen a ghost but I have out of body experiences and can do them when I want to. Some call it astral projection. It feels like being a ghost. I'm really quite a down to earth person, believe in science all the way. This has me stumped though. It's fascinating. As far as I'm aware, there is nothing medically wrong with me. If I'm having a long lie in the morning I'll bring on an OBE for fun.

LouH1981 · 04/01/2020 06:39

@ChristmasMistletoe1234 That’s fascinating, I’d love to hear more please! When did you find out you could do it and can you control where you go?

OP posts:
LucyAutumn · 04/01/2020 10:18

I'd also like to know more about the astral projection, how do you know for sure you're not dreaming?

Elieza · 04/01/2020 14:25

I remember reading about astral projection courses. The way they checked they were doing it correctly was to ask them what way they came to the venue today. And then ask them to go to the opposite side of the building to xxx street, pick a car registration number and memorise it, comeback into your body and then we physically all walk round and find the cars. Which they did.
Clever. Wish I could have the guts to do it! But I’m too scared to leave my body in case I can’t get back in!

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 04/01/2020 15:08

I've mentioned this on previous threads I think. Years ago when I lived in the South West I used to often drive on the A380 to Torquay. There's a part of the road around the Ashcombe turn off where, every time I drove it, I felt as if it was the place where I would die. There is such an aura of restless spirits there and sometimes I felt a presence in my car.

I mentioned it one day to my brother - who was the one I was visiting and he said he felt the same.

I have no idea if there has ever been an accident or murder there, but I wouldn't be surprised.

I was always torn between wanting to drive through that area fast and not wanting to do anything that could cause my death. It was weird. I'm still convinced I'll die there one day even though I don't go on the road any more as both my brother and I have moved to other parts,of the country.

PlomBear · 04/01/2020 15:12

Has anybody stayed at the Jamaica Inn in Cornwall?

Something got into bed with us in the night and when I woke up there was blood on the pillow!

I’m always drawn to living in old hospitals but never had anything spooky happen. My current flat is in a building from 1780. No ghosts! When I think of all the people who must have died here I’m a bit surprised.
