So, similar to a fellow mumsnetter, I too am laid up in bed, I have an infection post partum so feeling a bit rubbish and would really love to hear about the spookiest unexplained things that have happened to you.
I’m always fascinated by this especially from people who are skeptics and something has genuinely taken them aback.

I’ll start...just moved in to our new (to us) house (about 100 years old) and DS was about 6 weeks old. Middle of the night and I was changing him in the spare room on a changing table. Heard a voice ask if I was alright. I’d left DH deep asleep in our room and although it didn’t sound like his voice I assumed it was him and answered ‘yes fine’. Returned seconds later expecting him to be awake but he was still asleep.
A few weeks later, my mum mentioned while our shopping that she thought our house was a bit spooky. And when I asked why, she said that while she was trying to get to sleep in the other spare room she heard a voice gently ask her if she was alright. She said she just hid under the duvet!
Freaked me out but has never happened again...

@easythere oooooh! I would never sleep in there again! Your sister is brave 🙈

Easythere, my cat did that to me. I was so comforted by his presence.

LouH1981 · 02/01/2020 20:45

@LittleSweet This is nice, it sounds like your Grandparents enjoy being pretty active still. I love the fact your Grandads cat visits. I wonder if they visit you in particular because they know you believe and won’t dismiss their efforts.

I've had a few instances where I'm convinced one of my Grandparents has come to visit me. The most recent one was a few nights after I'd bought DD2 home from hospital. She was asleep in her cot next to my bed and I woke up (albeit in a sleepy haze) and saw a shadow over the cot. It didn't scare me and I just knew it was one of her great grandparents coming to meet her. Something similar happened with DD1 too.

I had a slightly freaky one where we were staying with a big group of friends in a holiday cottage. I went to bed early one night and I clearly heard footsteps running down the corridor and my door opening and then closing. Then one of my friends was in the bathroom and the light kept going on and off as through someone was playing with the switch. It was more playful than scary though.

Shamelessly place marking as I love threads like these.. 👻

LouH1981 · 02/01/2020 20:48

@Elieza I think I’m too easily freaked out. I’d quite happily converse in the cold light of day but would worry that come night time all would kick off and I’m a wuss.
I saw a psychic after my Dad died and she suggested it was him but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t. He had a thick Black Country accent and this person didn’t.

I think it's because my parents are abusive and they know I needed them more. It was really hard for me as they died when I was a child and it truly was a loss of people who loved me.

Hotpinkangel19 · 02/01/2020 21:04

In 2017 both my parents died just 11 weeks apart, I was pregnant with my daughter at the time, and was heartbroken that they'd never meet each other. A few weeks after we'd brought her home, a 'baby girl' helium balloon we'd had left in our bedroom floated out of the room and into the bathroom, I followed it, into the bathroom where my oldest daughter was in the bath. It floated above the toilet and hovered there, then went back out onto the landing. Then back into the bathroom. My daughter said, I bet it's grandma or grandad coming to see us, so I jokingly said Dad, come away from the toilet, and the balloon floated back to the landing! My son then said 'grandad, if it's you, go downstairs, and the balloon floated slowly downstairs!
I like to think it was my Dad coming to visit us.

Always used to say to my Nan and grandad almost 30 years ago could they leave a feather on my pillow.

When I was around 18/19 I was back home for the Christmas break from uni and having a laze in bed. I lived in a ground floor flat and on the communal door we had a trade button that worked until midday ish. Also had a dog that barked at everyone unknown. My Nan used to pop up every day and that day I heard the front door open, dog didn't bark so I thought it must be my Nan. I turned over away from the door and pretended to be asleep as I couldn't be bothered to chat!! My bedroom door opened, I felt the presence lurk for a moment, leave my room, walk out the front door and close it. I ended up falling asleep. When I awoke, I rolled over and found a beautiful feather on my pillow. I called my Nan and asked if she had been up, she hadn't, no one else in the house as it was a normal working day. Truly believe it was my grandad coming back to keep his promise. Just so distinct in my head that I wasn't facing the door so couldn't see anything.

My great uncle died a few years ago, he was an electrician by trade his whole life. During the funeral service as the celebrant was talking about his career, the lights in the crematorium started flickering, turned off completely, then came back on! It was very surreal and might have been a complete coincidence but we couldn't help but have a little giggle about it!

Chicky2 · 02/01/2020 21:33

About 15 years ago we lived in a17th century cottage in the New Forest, all beams and low ceilings. As a light sleeper I would hear someone walk up the stairs at night with heavy footsteps, it happened a few times a week, I would count the footsteps and there would be thirteen.
When I told DH he just laughed and said we only have eleven stairs. I got used to the noise but I never looked out of the bedroom door in case I saw something. After a few years living there we had the floor downstairs dug out to make the ceiling higher, there were several floors on top of one another, and when they had been removed we found two extra stairs to make thirteen. DH had to listen to me then
We now live in a 70s box with no spooky activity which is fine by me

I moved into a haunted house, I even told the landlord after I’d moved. I’ve lived in old houses most of my adult life but never ever experienced this. A man stood in my kitchen, a man stood in my bedroom, my loft hatch opening all the time, my friends dog coming to stay who I had never heard bark would not stop barking at the house, my son saying who’s that man? All the god dam time, feeling someone touching my shoulder, and my boyfriend coming over to stay and saying there’s something horrific in this house. Stayed there 4 months.

The most terrifying thing though that ever happened to me was taking drugs with my friend (we’d done it often it was nothing new) and having an absolute hell trip where I was seeing borrower people (like the film) all going offit all over my friends house. I sat on the toilet with my feet up for about 2 hours absolutely terrified to get off cos they wanted to get me. Horrendous! I could barely be in her house again after that!!! Don’t do drugs.

I pulled the car over one morning last year to see to DD4 in the back of the car. I wanted to pull her blanket back over her legs or something so i pulled over by the muddy gateway to a very big field. The sort that goes out of sight in all directions and was just ankle high stubble. The boundary hedges along the road were waist high thin shrubs no leaves, winter. Clear cold morning.

So - i jumped out of the driver's seat and walked round the back of the car dealt with DD shut her door again and straightened up to go back to my side of the car. Glanced to my right and saw two people, a man and woman i think, dressed in navy waterproofs walking hand in hand across the field through the stubbly grass (no path) straight toward us. Maybe 30 meters away.

As i sat back in the drivers seat i glanced past DH (in passenger seat) towards the field and the couple were gone. Just - gone! Just like that with in about 8/10 seconds. Acres of field. No where to hide. Couldn't have covered the distance to the gate in that time and no where to hide even if they had.

DH looked at my frowning face, then turned to look at the field as well and said simply ''Oh ... that couple ... ?''. He'd noticed them too. Where DID they bloody go?!?!?

Weird!

LouH1981 · 02/01/2020 21:39

@Hotpinkangel19 I really love this! It’s realky nice to think they did meet after all!

10storeylovesong · 02/01/2020 21:43

@LouH1981 that same thing has never happened again, but I've heard footsteps in the landing and we had a friend round once who had never been to the house before and who I hadn't told the story to, who straight away said that she felt a presence on the stairs.

ProfessorPollington · 02/01/2020 21:46

A friend lived in a rented house. Weird things happened in that house. Owner would not enter and would not drawn as to why. Dogs also would not enter. There was a smell you could walk through like stepping in and out of it if that makes sense. you could literally smell it strongly one step and not the next. If you were downstairs you would hear footsteps but find no one home. Windows would open in unoccupied rooms. Weird thing was house was not that old.

Laiste · 02/01/2020 21:50

@Chicky2 your house structure 'proving' your experience reminds me of something my DM told me about which happened in the house my dad grew up in. If she was in the hall at night without the light on she would occasionally (this is twice a year max) see the figure of a man in an old fashioned smart suit, standing still with his face pressed against the hall wall. She felt no sense of malevolence. She said nothing about it to my dad until the fourth or fifth time thinking he'd pooh poo it. However he thought about it and asked her where exactly and then said - ''he'd be standing looking through the old doorway to the living room''. The old doorway had been bricked up and decorated over and my mum had had no idea about it.

onedayallthiswillbeyours · 02/01/2020 21:50

I don't believe in ghosts really, but wouldn't rule out "energy imprints" or something like that.
I have certainly seen a few odd things over the years having always lived in very old houses.

My school friend (when we were about 14/15) told me she would often see a strange ball of light in her bedroom. She lived in a Georgian Manor House so the rooms were all very large and square with high ceilings. Once when sleeping over at her house I saw it too. It was a perfect shining globe just hovering in mid air in the middle of the room. I have never been able to come up with any reasonable explanation for what it could have been.

My own house now dates from around 1690/1700 in the oldest parts. On two consecutive occasions when we returned from our summer holiday (so identical incidences a year apart) a lockable latch on the inside of the front door (only accessible from the inside and always left pinned back in the unlatched position) had been flipped down leaving us unable to open the front door!!! Luckily my parents live locally and hold a back door key. The latch could not have flipped down by itself - someone/something must have helped it Shock. After the second time I taped the whole mechanism up with duck tape which seems to have foiled the cheeky ghosts!

I have a very dog reactive dog who is currently in training. Last weekend I took her to an isolated trail In the middle of the countryside for a walk assuming that there wouldn’t be many dogs there. We didn’t see anyone for miles but then in the distance I saw a bloke walking towards us with a dog. I got a bit closer and he carried on walking towards us but my dog was not reacting at all. It was like she couldn’t even see him. So I got closer still ... man still walking towards us, my dog not reacting but I lost my nerve as he was in “speaking distance” and bent down to prepare my dog. Made her sit, asked her to wait, asked her to watch me which she did willingly ... I turned to see how close this bloke was and there was nobody there. Nowhere for him to go ... empty fields at either side of the trail where you could see for miles ... there was literally nobody there.

Burlea · 02/01/2020 21:55

Son and Dil have the lady who lived there before visit. (She died in their bedroom). Every time they do any DIY she appears if she likes it she leaves, if not the door to their bedroom opens and closes.
When our grandson was about 3 he asked to cuddle the nice lady. Yet his sister has never felt her presence.

BigFatMamaJam · 02/01/2020 22:04

Oh another one ...

Years ago my grandma worked in an old country manor for the couple that lived there. It wasn’t a huge mansion or anything but was an old Georgian farm house in the middle of nowhere with stables, farm buildings, a cellar and even the old servants quarters upstairs where they had their own staircase to get to the kitchen without disturbing the rest of the house. So I’m it’s day, it was posh. At this point it was unmaintained and falling to bits. The old woman died and months later the old man died. The family asked my grandma to stay there to look after it while they got it sold. She was frightened as she said it was spooky and weird stuff kept happening so family members took it in turns to stay with her.

First incident ... my cousin who was 4 at the time was happily playing upstairs and then suddenly reappeared crying saying the old woman upstairs had told him to be quiet.

2nd incident - my other cousin who was 12 was playing in one of the outbuildings when he suddenly banged on the kitchen window frantically shouting that they had to leave. He refused to go back into the house. He had wet himself. He screamed the place down when they tried to ask him what was wrong and never would speak of what he’d seen. He’s 40 now and still goes pale when the house is mentioned and will remove himself from the room if conversation continues.
