What is it about monopoly..

That makes people pissy and bitchy!!

We can never play a game without someone getting annoyed.

I swear the creator knew what they were doing, when they created this game

I still love it and still play it but YANBU.

It is based on greed I suppose - not just the need to win. It doesn't bring out the best in people.

I think we tried that one year but neither one of us are fantastic at each category so ended up packing it in as we couldn’t answer questions.

Now Disney trivial pursuit...yeah we are at each other’s throats Xmas Grin

This brings out the worse in my 12 year old DD and my DP (her step dad)
The only time they argue is playing this game!
They get on amazingly but get monopoly out and they are like enemies. The words 'cheater, unfair, spoilt, idiot' gets thrown around before anybody gets to pass bloody go!
Once, DP tried to rip DD off, DD still won, she was as smug as anything...bad bad winner and DP sulked for soooo long! It is now banned in my house!

It was originally a game designed to make a political point about the shape and feel of society when landlords and companies are allowed free rein, hence the name Monopoly. It's designed to reveal that living under a monopoly is crap.

Naturally it feels horridly unfair when you play it- it's supposed to!

Dd got the ultimate banking version for christmas, not one argument so far. I'm a bit gutted, I quite like someone losing their shit at losing cash or the accusations of the banker slyly nicking it.

Feck me, dd has literally just walked into the room with the box, I'll let you know if we survive.

"We all go around the board once before anyone is allowed to buy anything"... FUCK OFF!

Sorry, it's a sore point for me. People drag the game out instead of playing by the proper, brutal, rules which make the game be over nice and quickly.

Good point. My in-laws had a rule about putting all the money from tax and fines in the centre of the board and you won it if you landed on Free Parking. Dude! Way to extend the game by four hours!

the person who invented the game did so in order to teach the inherent evils of capitalism. you aren't supposed to enjoy it.

the card game monopoly deal is much more fun to play.

I loved playing against my dad when I was younger because he never just let me win, but taught me strategy not just letting me lose hopelessly! My mum played sometimes because I liked it but she just didn’t care enough to get ruthless so it was a bit boring.

One group of friends i played with insisted on “playing nice” rules where if one person had a street of a colour then nobody else would buy the other streets of that colour. Which defeats the point tbh. Hmm

And I refuse to play with my bff who is a total cheat! I love her dearly, and she quite happily admits to the cheating, her family apparently always let her be the banker and she was most put out when I refused (in light of the cheating admission!) 😆

When I was at university, our flat played it one night, ended up with one of the guys flipping over the whole table with the board mid game hulk style because he was losing. Hmm

I agree with BeanTownNancy - no one actually knows the rules. Every family plays it differently. This is fine until a family member does something daft like getting married and you suddenly have a different set of rules from the 'other side of the family'.

Because you invest hours in a game.... that's won or lost in the first three rounds of the board. Everyone then has to wait hours while the winner wins.

Seriously there are so many quality board games out there these days, i have no idea why anyone still plays such a godawful game.
