To think we shouldn’t have had to pay?

Took DH, 2 DC and BIL out for lunch today. After ordering, it took 10 minutes for the drinks to come (not too long considering, but they were literally cans that we could see from the table). We then had to wait another hour and a half for food! There were 2 cooked meals and 3 sandwiches. The cooked meals were burned and the bread was stale, basically inedible. We are a bit but couldn’t manage much. We were then told that it was cash only, even though it hadn’t been clearly advertised (argument was that it was on the door, which was open so we couldn’t see the sign). It was around £60 for the 5 of us, so I couldn’t afford it with cash. We walked out without paying and they threatened to call the police. Haven’t heard anything yet. AIBU to have refused to pay? And will they be able to do anything when they don’t have names or anything?

You can't just walk out without paying. You should have expressed dissatisfaction about the service and food not just walked out.

MamToTeens · 31/12/2019 21:00

Yes, but we couldn’t actually pay as they didn’t take card. No ATM that we could see.

Disgusting to walk out like that. Did you have the drinks, presumably you should have at least paid for them? Did you complain about the food immediately or at all? You’re just a thief. Technical term, bilking. Horrible behaviour.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 31/12/2019 21:01

Then you should have left your details and returned to pay. That’s theft!

Cherrysoup · 31/12/2019 21:02

Yes, but we couldn’t actually pay as they didn’t take card. No ATM that we could see.

So find one! Negotiate what you would be prepared to pay and find the money.

WaterSheep · 31/12/2019 21:03

Very unreasonable! If there was a problem with the food or service you should have mentioned it at the time, so they could sort this out. It doesn't sound like you spoke to anyone, and as for not having enough cash, this isn't an excuse to leave without paying. Shock

VivaLeBeaver · 31/12/2019 21:03

So you find the nearest atm and go back. Which is what I’ve had to do once before and I was embarrassed about it (not sure why, was just worried they’d think I was pulling a fast one) and raced back.

ChaosisntapitChaosisaladder19 · 31/12/2019 21:03

That's disgraceful one for you should have stayed and other located the nearest cash machine via google maps it's not hard. Also you should have informed the food wasnt up to scratch. We had a couple who once did that in the restaurant despite ordering from the main menu not happy hour menu and ordered the king prawns and didnt want to pay. Appalling behaviour on you're part.Crown Biscuit

Nicknacky · 31/12/2019 21:03

You can’t just not pay like that. It’s up to you to make sure you have the funds.

Forcryingoutloudwtf · 31/12/2019 21:03

You want to know if you were unreasonable to steal?

LuckyAmy1986 · 31/12/2019 21:04

Personally I would have gone back with some cash.. did you complain about the food at the same?

VivaLeBeaver · 31/12/2019 21:04

Hope they don’t have cctv pictures of you....you may appear on local fb groups yet. I’ve seen a restaurant do that.

LuckyAmy1986 · 31/12/2019 21:04

Time not same!

TheQueef · 31/12/2019 21:04

Necky bugger.

slipperywhensparticus · 31/12/2019 21:05

Your a bunch of thieves 🤷‍♀️

Thoughtlessinengland · 31/12/2019 21:05

What?

FruitcakeOfHate · 31/12/2019 21:06

Wow! First of all, why did you eat it? The time to complain then and there, 'This isn't edible' and send it back.

Soubriquet · 31/12/2019 21:06

Sorry but you can’t just not pay

Someone should have gone to find an ATM whilst the rest stayed behind

You should have also complained about the food when you realised how bad it was

RhymingRabbit3 · 31/12/2019 21:06

Did you complain about the wait? Did you complain about the state of the food? Did you give them a chance to rectify the issues (via refund, replacement etc.)

If not, you were unreasonable to just walk out.

OwlinaTree · 31/12/2019 21:07

I think it sounds awful at the café. Am hour and a half for some sandwiches? Did you complain?

Forcryingoutloudwtf · 31/12/2019 21:08

If you were going to pay with a card why would not having a card machine make it okay to just walk out? Get the cash. Take it down tomorrow.

londonrach · 31/12/2019 21:08

Walking out not pAying yabu and a cf. complain about the food and arrange payment

MamToTeens · 31/12/2019 21:09

We complained when we were waiting, they kept saying they were going as quick as they could. Complained after trying to eat it, then they gave us the bill. I left a fiver for the drinks because we did drink them.

Five quid wouldn't cover 5 peoples drinks. You a massively CF. You knew full well what you were doing.
