I didn't think you'd be a "crunchy mummy"

Said to me. The reasons they think I'm a "crunchy" mum (whatever the fuck that means). I breastfed both children, with a few days gap in between, for a total of 4.5 yrs. I used a sling. I co slept with both, often still do with the younger (almost 3 yr old). I bake with them sometimes Hmm

Reasons I wasn't expected to be "crunchy" I wear "normal" clothes, wear make up, have tidy hair (sometimes) and go to work!!!

I'm a bit perplexed by this, from someone who I thought knew me quite well!

Oh I forgot. I'm not a vegetarian. That's another reason I shouldn't be crunchy.

what on earth does crunchy mummy mean

fluffygreenmonsterhoody · 30/12/2019 23:05

I’ve never heard the term crunchy mummy before. I have eaten a few of them this week though...

2020BetterBeBetter · 30/12/2019 23:07

What you are describing is pretty much most mothers I know. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sparrowlegs248 · 30/12/2019 23:07

@fluffygreenmonsterhoody if it was based on crunchie consumption then I'd definitely fit the description.

As far as I can tell, it's a bit of a derogatory term for....... I don't really know. Vegetarian breast feeding sling wearing mum's, given what was said to me!

Are they like the shit extra hard fried rogue pombear at the corner of the bag?

Jollitwiglet · 30/12/2019 23:07

Oh by that explanation I would be a crunchy mum too!

I had to Google what that meant and apparently it means neo hippy. I had to Google that too but apparently it's just the modern way of saying hippy Grin

LucaFritz · 30/12/2019 23:08

There was a thing online about this a few year's ago crappypictures.com/crappy-mohs-scale-crunchy-mamas/
Makes a fun read

SantaBuddy · 30/12/2019 23:09

I've never heard the term crunchy mummy before!! I've seen a poster on here called crunchymum and I'd assumed it was because she likes the chocolate (as do I) but maybe crunchy mums are a thing Shock

gamerchick · 30/12/2019 23:11

I haven't heard that term in years Grin I wouldn't have thought it derogatory though. It's just an attachment style gentle parenting jizzle.

Mumofjustboys · 30/12/2019 23:11

Did they maybe mean "crusty"? which i would take to be a derogatory term for a hippy

Sparrowlegs248 · 30/12/2019 23:12

@JKScot4 ah useful link. I do make my own granola Grin but I also used disposable nappies. I do have washable wipes for non poo related incidents. And I most definitely am not anti vaxx.

OP posts:
Ohyesiam · 30/12/2019 23:13

I was a crunchy mum according to those criterion, but also wear normal clothes.
I hate the way everything is categorised and labelled now.
Someone told DD she was a visco girl , on the strength of her not wearing drag queen Instagram makeup.
Neither of us seem to fit into these thing boxes, which must be the case for most people. No one odd that much of a walking stereotype.

Sparrowlegs248 · 30/12/2019 23:13

@gamerchick oh it was definitely derogatory, at least from this particular person!

OP posts:
EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 30/12/2019 23:14

I remember a mum on here self describing as "crunchy"

Apparently this meant that people should have understood that her child running round being disruptive in a church was a "free spirit" Grin

Her arse was handed to her, for the church chaos and the use of the term "crunchy"

It kind of means, alternate, vegan, make your own clothes, grow your own veg type lifestyle as i understand it.

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 30/12/2019 23:15

Crunchy, granola, lentil-weaving... All mean the same thing when used about other people's parenting.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 30/12/2019 23:17

Haha I’ve had the same plus “Earth mother type”
Home birth, BF, using a wrap, cosleeping & home Ed apparently don’t match my boring clothing & qualifications Grin

gamerchick · 30/12/2019 23:22

@gamerchick oh it was definitely derogatory, at least from this particular person!

I understand, they sound like a bit of a dick. Or jealous bizarrely.

BecauseReasons · 30/12/2019 23:23

@LucaFritz I'm a level 7 on the crunchy scale!

Where are you, OP?

ALLMYSmellySocks · 30/12/2019 23:25

Some people are very tribal. She thought you were the same tribe as her and now she's re evaluating. It couldn't possibly be that you make decisions about parenting based on what's right for you as a family, it has to be part of your social identity.

LucaFritz · 30/12/2019 23:26

Im between a 6 and a 7 i think current obsession is cloth diapers and my ring sling 😂

Sssneks · 30/12/2019 23:26

Oh shit... I think I'm a bit of a crunchy mum. I didn't know there was a word for it.

june2007 · 30/12/2019 23:27

Nowt wrong with being a bit Crunchy I am too. Or as I would say more of a natural mummy. (Not a vegetarian though.)

PrincessMaryaBolkonskaya · 30/12/2019 23:28

I remember crunchy church mummy Grin I also thought the @crunchymummy named herself after that thread, or likes crunchies, or both.
