To think this year has been the worst for Christmas telly

None of the stations seem to have made any effort whatsoever. Even on boxing night there was nothing special on anywhere. Usually there'd have been a couple of good dramas, a new Agatha Christie, festive editions of several popular shows eg Midsomer murders, grantchester, Downton Abbey .

But apart from Gavin and Stacy and a rather lacklustre Call the Midwife there's been nothing.

Aibu to be really disappointing this year's festive offerings?

Yeah, it’s been pretty crap.

Primrosepenny · 28/12/2019 18:48

Absolutely rubbish tv!
Gavin and Stacy was overrated and overhyped.

WellErrr · 28/12/2019 18:49

YANBU. I don’t watch loads of tv but I do enjoy the Christmas stuff - usually! Not been much this year though.

NemophilistRebel · 28/12/2019 18:49

I’ve loved the Christmas tv this year
Especially the festive documentary specials with Lucy Worsley

Puppybum · 28/12/2019 18:49

I've only enjoyed Wurzel

KitKat1985 · 28/12/2019 18:51

YANBU. I've never watched Gavin and Stacey so had no interest in the new episode.

Other than that bugger all telly apart from repeats and films that I've seen a million times.

The only good new piece of TV was channel's 4 TV version of 'The Tiger who Came to Tea' which the DDs loved.

ShinyMe · 28/12/2019 18:51

I thought the Christmas Carol on BBC4 was excellent. And I enjoyed Paddington 2.

elfbuddy · 28/12/2019 18:53

Darts and football here and there’s been loads on 🎯⚽️❤️

Oblomov20 · 28/12/2019 18:55

Very poor. Shockingly so.

AdoptedBumpkin · 28/12/2019 18:55

I've quite liked it tbh.

Not a vintage year but not the worst ever IMHO.

JamieVardysHavingABaby · 28/12/2019 18:56

The Chase has been the highlight for me....which isn’t saying much. Thank god for Netflix.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 28/12/2019 18:56

Dire. I enjoyed the new version of A Christmas Carol and Gavin and Stacy was ok but not that funny really. Very very disappointing. Thankful for the board games.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 28/12/2019 18:58

Oh and the Snail and the Whale! I love the book, DD hates it because I love it Grin

SquareAsABlock · 28/12/2019 18:59

It's been getting worse year on year. They're getting a bit desperate wither the Julia Donaldson adaptations now, wish they'd give another Roald Dahl a go, or mabye a more unknown children's author (anything but bloody Walliams). All the films are all predictable Disney shite, mixed in with soaps trying to out do each other in misery. Apart from Gavin and Stacey we pretty much gave up, just waited for the kids to go to bed so me could watch more of The Witcher on Netflix. Henry Cavill has brought me much Xmas cheer in toght leather trousers BlushGrin.

Also fed up of Pointless disappearing as soon as it comes back on, not really to do with Christmas just a rant in general.

AdoptedBumpkin · 28/12/2019 19:04

I've enjoyed among other things Gavin and Stacy, the Tiger who came to Tea, Wurzel, Mrs Brown's Boys to name a few. Corrie is going downhill but the shootout was gripping.

SushiGo · 28/12/2019 19:05

Lucy Worsleys show about Christmas Carols was brilliant. We watched strictly and enjoyed that.

That's it.

Problem is, we like most families watch everything on catch up which lends itself to bingeing a whole bunch of specials in one go but we have turned to Netflix because iplayer and channel 4s on demand apps don't seem to have been promoting very clearly what specials they have had on.

SushiGo · 28/12/2019 19:06

Ooh, good point, tiger who came to tea was amazing. I thought snail and the whale was a bit meh though. BBC has been playing things a bit safe.

22Giraffes · 28/12/2019 19:10

Enjoyed watching Beauty and the beast on Xmas eve with MIL, we both like Call the Midwife as well. Big Fat quiz of the year was funny the other night, and I'm an unashamed Eastenders fan lol sorry not sorry

MaverickSnoopy · 28/12/2019 19:12

I remember as a child tv being packed to the rafters. Even up until recently there would be a goodish selection and you could record a decent selection. This year has been particularly poor. I'm sure it's the wide selection offered by Sky, Netflix and Amazon.

hiphiphoorayback · 28/12/2019 19:13

I liked Chris and Michaela

TheSquitz · 28/12/2019 19:26

I've enjoyed Gavin & Stacey and really loved Wurzel Gummidge. ITV have done bugger all. Christmas Corrie has been utter bollocks.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 28/12/2019 19:28

It has been bad but definitely a step up from last year.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 28/12/2019 19:28

I agree, the only good thing or non repeat I’ve watched is Gavin & Stacey!

SilverDragonfly1 · 28/12/2019 19:32

Agree. 33 specials on iPlayer and about 3 are new.

In fact, just went to check that and they seem to have removed the category!

ohprettybaby · 28/12/2019 19:34

I didn't get a chance to watch much at all as I was hosting so was playing games (charades etc). My favourite programme was the animated 'The Good dinosaur' on Boxing day morning on BBC1.
