To think this year has been the worst for Christmas telly

None of the stations seem to have made any effort whatsoever. Even on boxing night there was nothing special on anywhere. Usually there'd have been a couple of good dramas, a new Agatha Christie, festive editions of several popular shows eg Midsomer murders, grantchester, Downton Abbey .

But apart from Gavin and Stacy and a rather lacklustre Call the Midwife there's been nothing.

Aibu to be really disappointing this year's festive offerings?

Worzel Gummidge was fantastic.

Christmas Carol was good too, but I agree there hasn’t been much else. The soaps have taken over these days, there’s no room for a good Agatha Christie drama or anything. And fecking Mrs Brown, the hideous unfunny creature.Sad

... oooh yes Loved Paddington 2 though I saw it at the cinema already.Grin

RumbleDoll · 28/12/2019 19:41

Not Christmassy but am looking forward to Wolves later with Jason Momoa

AllergicToAMop · 28/12/2019 19:44

I agree. It also made my realisation that the live Freeview is actually my most expensive "subscription" service that much more bitterXmas Angry

And omg that emoji quotes "fangry"😂😂😂

bettybattenburg · 28/12/2019 19:46

Yeah, it's been rubbish.

Misscromwellrocks · 28/12/2019 19:47

Paddington 2 is a lovely film but a few years ago it would have been shown at 5pm on Christmas eve. This year it was one of the main highlights and the proposed Agatha Christie was cancelled becausr6 it 'wasn't ready in time'.

There's a general sense of 'can't be arsed' about it all.

I missed Agatha Christie this year too. I think we’re getting The Pale Horse probably at Easter.
Gavin and Stacey was a bit meh. Dracula on New Year’s Eve better be good.

confusedandemployed · 28/12/2019 19:52

It's been rubbish for years. This year I've taped a fair few things and enjoyed Wurzel, the Tiger Who Came To Tea, Gavin and Stacey (I live in "Essex" so I love location spotting even if I didn't think it was fab, which I do!) but my favourite was The Last Igloo on BBC4.

FesteredFairy · 28/12/2019 19:52

But you have to remember that there are many more ways of watching programmes these days than there were even 5 years ago.
What I find irritating is the number of repeats of repeats shown at various times of day.

Ragwort · 28/12/2019 19:52

Shocking ... have no desire to watch Gavin & Stacey, currently watching the Susan Hill Ghost Story (C5) but it’s not that interesting.

MurrayTheMonk · 28/12/2019 19:58

It's been awful. I've been in bed poorly since Christmas Day night and thought at least I'd have some decent telly to watch. Jesus, there has been nothing on.I've opted for rewatching some of game of thrones, finished The Crown on Netflix and now watching Sense and Sensibility on some obscure sky channel. Dire.

chocatoo · 28/12/2019 20:03

Agreed, absolutely dire. Struggled to find anything on Netflix that was old fashioned family film too.

Wonderbag · 28/12/2019 20:06

It’s been so disappointing [
No wonder the Gavin & Stacey program makers have been high giving each other about their top ratings ....there’s been no other choices!!
Why on earth do they think we want to watch the life of Dolly Parton is beyond me

Worzel Gummidge is the best thing I saw

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 28/12/2019 20:08

Was pretty rubbish, mostly repeats. I enjoyed The Snail and the Whale, Christmas Carol and The Tiger who Came To Tea. Gavin and Stacey was ok. We did not enjoy Wurzel, my youngest DC was really frightened so never finished. We really missed a Walliams production. Sadly seen all the ones made so far to many times.

Ragwort · 28/12/2019 20:09

Given up with the Ghost Story, watching the news instead ......

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 28/12/2019 20:09

As PP said thank goodness for Witcher loved it.

Lipz · 28/12/2019 20:11

It was definitely the worst, one of the irish channels had Britain's got talent another had Charlie and the chocolate factory which is a gazillion years old. There was lots of quoirs too...

sproutsgalore · 28/12/2019 20:11

Yes I agree, it's been crap this year. Usually there's umpteen things on that you want to watch (most of them clashing with one another) but not this time.

DH and I both got dvd's for Christmas and thank goodness for that.

Wonderbag · 28/12/2019 20:28

I want a new Sherlock Holmes and Charlie Brooker doing a wipe thing

misscockerspaniel · 28/12/2019 20:29

YANBU but I am looking forward to "The Trial of Christine Keeler" on BBC1 tomorrow evening.

Lllot5 · 28/12/2019 20:31

Oh yes I’d forgotten about Christine Keebler. I’m watching that too

misspiggy19 · 28/12/2019 20:36

Why on earth do they think we want to watch the life of Dolly Parton is beyond me

^My thoughts exactly.

GymBunny2020 · 28/12/2019 20:39

The Christmas lectures with Dr Hannah Fry have been fab - great children too.

G&S was so-so

Everything else has been crap!

LadyLooLaa · 28/12/2019 20:43

YANBU On BBC1 the night before Christmas Eve at 8.30pm (so prime time, mainstream tv) they were showing Still open all hours. For some reason this left me incensed! FFS. There have been some decent films, but very few great programmes. It comes to something when (other than Gavin and Stacey) the best thing on telly is the worlds strongest man...

KnifeAngel · 28/12/2019 20:43

It's been absolutely rubbish. I don't watch Gavin and Stacey but we had that on. I didn't find any of it funny. Call the Midwife wasn't much good. The Ghost Story wasn't great. It's been repeat after repeat.

VestaTilley · 28/12/2019 20:45

Agree. I don't want to sound all old (I'm 33), and "things used to be better" - but it was awful!!

Gavin and Stacey was great, but that was it! Not even any old classic films on that I could see.
